PlayStation 5 |OT| This SSD has no limits

Its weird in 2013, when Xbox One launched it was a bit embarrassing to own one, always felt like you were at the unpopular kids table. This generation feels opposite, its a bit embarrassing sending pictures of this chonky console to friends and knowing its less power than Series X, on top of all the game crashes and storage issues.

I loved the PS3 era to death, and the PS5 era reminds me more of then than the PS4 era. For people who skipped on PS4 this gen, they are doing a good job getting us back on board and stuff like Demon’s Souls, Returnal, near launch GT and Sackboy play a big part in that.

Sony published Dreams, Knack, Knack 2, Gravity Rush Remastered, Gravity Rush 2, Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, Bloodborne and a few Housemarque games like Alienation, Nex Machina (even though Housemarque may have self published this game, not sure) and Matterfall so they had variety on PlayStation 4. Sony will have variety on PlayStation 5 as well.

I love Housemarque and im very interested in Returnal but my friend keeps telling me that it’s a rogue like game meaning that when you die, you start at the beginning of the game. I’m hoping that’s not true or is at least on a mission by mission basis.

I have never owned a PS console since PS2 but even I got pulled to try out games from PS4. Last of us 1 & 2, Spiderman, Ghosts, Uncharted 4 they had some really good first party games.

I dont think all the studios need to fire on all cylinders all time tbh. One or two big games a year that create hype and if they deliver on that promise, its enough.

Eh…nah.

I believe Returnal is a Roguelite like Death Loop, Outer Wilds or an extended Demon’s Souls level where you can learn mechanics, maintain level and skill progress over runs and find shortcuts, so that the game can be beaten within a decent time. So Roguelike elements, but still feasible to beat within 10 hours or less. May be wrong though.

Is it kind of like Alienation where when you die, you start over at the beginning of the level?

I have not played Alienation, but my understanding with Returnal (which may be wrong) is you start at the “beginning” but you will have better weapons, skills, etc. and shortcuts. So, for example, say upon completing a section you can open a door that bridges one area to another. That can eliminate 30 minutes of gameplay. And so on and so forth, until the “beginning” of the game is just a 5 minute mad dash to the final boss after all the shortcuts are open and the enemies that once took 25 bullets die in 1 hit.

Okay, I understand now. That doesn’t sound too bad. Similar to the Souls games and something like Remnant: From the Ashes where there’s short cuts and whatnot. Thanks.

No worries. Again, may be wrong but I’m sure we’ll get a State of Play with Housemarque.

True and yeah, we’ll definitely get a State of Play for Returnal.

Ok, my PS5 came to day, and from the perspective of a fan that missed out on the PS4 after a few hours of play.

The Positives:

The Games: Astro is delightful as is Spider-Man Remastered. I can’t wait to jump into Demon’s Souls.

Download/Install Speed: I was able to download and install all of Demon’s Souls before I even beat the prologue of Spider-Man. It’s stupid fast.

No/Limited Loading: The games feel seamless and pop-in is mostly minimal.

Optimized 30fps: I know 60fps is best, but even 30fps here is done super well with minimal motion blur.

Haptic Feedback/Adaptive Triggers: The haptic feedback is the best in any controller I’ve ever used, and while the influencers slightly exaggerated it, it is still stupid impressive. The adaptive triggers are even better, adding to immersion in a single player environment.

The Visuals: Games look great. Raytracing in Spidey is VERY impressive.

The DualSense: In terms of PlayStation controllers, it feels fantastic and the closest to Xbox ones in form factor. If the 360/Xbox One controllers are an easy 10/10, this is a strong 9.

The Mixed Bags

The UI: It’s quick and responsive and the built in apps are fantastic, but has a bit of a learning curve. Not as easy to understand as Xbox’s or especially the PS3’s.

The Noise: The system runs super quiet when playing games, but is a noisy bugger when installing discs. Like, it sounds like a chainsaw murderer. I cannot play this in the middle of the night.

3D Audio: I was using the 3D Pulse headset, and while I could notice 3D audio in some instances (such as a busy street in Spider-Man), nothing I’ve heard strikes me as any better than Windows Sonic, and a lack of ATMOS support actually gives MS a step up. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t strike me as the big immersive thing they’ve pushed it as. Maybe a game really pushes the limits with it, but so far, it’s ok.

The Aesthetics: It looks better in person, but has an almost toyetic look to it which is a tad distracting. Looks less cutting edge and more cheap to be blunt, and the thing is massive. However, the DualSense looks great, and the little details on the PS5, the light and the minimalist front look good.

The Negatives

Cross-Gen Confusion: My PS5 downloaded the PS4 version of Miles, and now I have to go into the menus and find the proper PS5 version and redownload. It’s really dumb and shows MS was right on the money with Smart Delivery.

Firmware Folly: I’d really like to use Rest mode, but until they fix that issue, I’m too concerned to do it.

The Size: It’s as big as my torso, and I’m a 6’0 fat dude. It barely fits in my entertainment centre.

Conclusion

All in all, I have a strong first impression of the PS5, and I expect a great gen ahead as a place to play exclusives. There are definitely some kinks to be ironed out, but it’s a damn good system.

(didn’t want to quote the entire post)

Glad that you’re enjoying the PS5. Since you didn’t own a PS4, check out PS Plus Collection as it has a lot (perhaps all, not sure) of PS4 exclusives that can be played on PS5.

Is that Silent Hill reference? I’m assuming it’s a TGA reveal.

The Telegraph: Can you confirm whether [the previously announced] God of War Ragnorak will be a PS5 exclusive?

Jim Ryan: Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today.

Sounds like R&C and (presumably) DS are only true next gen PS5 1P titles for a while.

Why the sad face? That’s a very positive thing

Has the bug been fixed yet where all games are HDR making them look just too bright or actually too dim? Like Netflix on consoles?
