Thank you! Nothing at all wrong with any of the current offerings, aside from the Switch (which should be rectified soon) - this is just an unnecessary cash grab whilst creating additional work for devs on something that ultimately is going to sell a hell of a lot less than DF and media types have been trying to convince us of (see Concord Part 2, PSVR, PSVR 2, etc.)
I imagine this will sell better than the Portal or PSVR2, but that’s such a low bar for what is ultimately wholly unnecessary all around.
Astro Bot sold 1.5m. Probably a good return on there relative to team and project size (Returnal was called good success at 500k iirc) so yeah, hopefully it’s good for the studio to make more smaller cool games. I hope they make a new thing next, not necessarily a 3D platformer.
At this point with Sony, I hope that’s enough because that team is extremely talented (the remnants from Japan Studio) and this industry has fucked over enough devs at this point… but I digress, happy as hell for Asobi and I’m glad people are enjoying it!
This doesn’t even come near half making up for closing Japan Studio, but it’s a nice and important thing regardless. This team you just leave alone, don’t ask questions don’t require them to follow trends or anything, we could get back something resembling the great creativity of Japan Studio hopefully.
Trust me, I’m with you; Sony has closed some of the oldest, most pedigreed studios that I grew up with and beyond the standard media bias, I’ll never forgive them for letting that lot off the hook for doing so.
So yeah, leave Asobi to do whatever they wish and maybe we’ll get a semblance of Old-Sony back.
Astro Bot selling only 1.5M copies is a shame. Such a great freaking game and 55m of PS5 owners didn’t show up. Hopefully, Sony has made a profit already from the game because if not, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Team Asobi get shut down in the near future.
Outside of Nintendo and then big established IP like Crash, that’s a decent number for a 3D platformer. Crash Bandicoot 4 managed 5m lifetime so far, and that’s (more?) multiplatform-ish, or was it first on PS4? Idk, the point is, 3D platformers have a limit even with high reviews and a lot of word of mouth.
True and I agree. It’s just funny how so many PlayStation fanboys say that Xbox fans don’t buy games yet they don’t show up either to support their own. Really hope that we get an Astro Bot 2 in a few years.
To put it into perspective, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart did 1.1 million in around a month to about 10 million consumers. By comparison, the 1.5 million out of 55 million is lacking and substantially less than what others were projecting (wrongly). Granted there seems to be an upper bound to the market size of platformers not named Mario.
Maybe it’ll continue to have decent sales, but I highly doubt it’ll ever have any PC sales bump.
From wiki on sales of R&C:RA
Parts of these leaks revealed that in June 2020 Rift Apart was projected to sell 2.2 million units and generate $73 million in revenue on an $81 million budget. In the same leak it was revealed that over 2.7 million copies of the game were shipped (sell-in) and turned a profit with $145 million in net sales by February 2022. Further leaks revealed that Rift Apart had sold over 3.97 million units by its second calendar year (June 2023).
Apparently the image quality for several games really has to be seen with own eyes to be believed and can’t be seen properly via YouTube videos. I sense some hyperbole from PS fans there and really, there is no other way for me to see it anyway. And is it really worth 800 euros? OK, for some it’s probably more like 400 if they trade in their PS5, but not for me.
Lol whenever anyone says “it can’t be seen properly with a YouTube video” I instantly get suspicious of copium (as you say) - firstly as a lot of content is 4K/60 on there now (and on Twitch too I think) and secondly because if I can’t tell the difference on there it’s likely it’s not a big enough difference…
As someone who watched every Series X game in 4K 60 and below on my TV while waiting for the console to release, I can honestly say (as someone who always goes quality mode and was trained at one point to spot image quality differences) that I didn’t notice any difference once I got my Series X and started playing the games myself.
The fact is it’s for people who want slightly better picture quality / minor RT improvements or slightly better frame rates on non-CPU bound games who don’t want to build a PC - or who will buy any tat that PlayStation puts out.
If they were serious about image quality and frame rates they’d have a monster PC, it’s that simple - so it does my head in online when they act like they’re wealthy enthusiasts and Xbox fans are peasants when it’s been shown many times that Xbox players are more likely to be enthusiasts who buy more games and the wealthy lot are the nutters with 4090 PC rigs lol…
Reminds me of the SSD crap - “it’s life changing, it’s so fast” - I’ve got a much faster one in my PC and honestly I notice no difference to my Series X
Hardware upgrade that’s $200 more and designed to make games look better… makes games look better? Who even argues that it won’t make games look better? Most argument is that its cost relative to perceived enhancement is minimal, not that it’s not there or imperceivable, just… barely for most people lol
My son had his 9th Birthday and really wanted a PSVR2. His favorite game on Quest 3 is “Gorilla Tag” and it was coming out on PSVR2 so he wanted one.
I subscribed to a year of PlayStations dumb over priced Plus Premium because it included a few VR games. I played Walking Dead Saints and Sinners and was pretty impressed. It’s too bad PSVR2 doesn’t seem to be clicking with gamers because the AAA graphics are far superior to Quest 3. The younger generation of kids don’t really much care about graphics so hopefully “Gorilla Tag” helps bring in more people.
Just came back from playing on a friend’s PS 5 Pro and it was hard to see any tangible difference to most of the games let alone anything game-changing.
I can be hard on Microsoft for some of their miss-steps and mistakes but the Microsoft nailed the call not to have a Pro model and instead focus on a completely new unit
Will say PS5 Pro is nicely made hardware and was much smaller and a lot less heavy than I was expecting.
I still think the only reason PS5 Pro exists is because PlayStation wanted power bragging rights for Grand Theft Auto 6. Without GTA6 there is no reason for PS5 Pro to exist.
I think it’s that, plus they want to use PSSR in the PS6.
If they tune the hell out of it to something approaching DLSS 3 then it may allow them to use lower specs and save money on manufacturing (to maximise profits).
So having a console using it right now basically gives them a few million beta testers…
Also it appears Sony still haven’t got the hang of user experience - they’ve marked some games as Pro enhanced when they’ve not been patched yet (and the differences are clearly so minimal gamers are struggling to tell).
The comments also suggest Smart Delivery is still something PS desperately needs - too often the PS5 apparently tries to download the PS4 version even when you’ve got the PS5 one installed:
