HDR was the reason why I bought a PS4 Pro. Seeing Horizon Zero Dawn in HDR, oh man looked awesome on the Sony X800D 4KTV I had at the time.
I do believe that spec wise, $700 isn’t bad at all and like Microsoft, Sony isn’t going to take a loss on their hardware anymore. Whether or not, all publishers and developers take full advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware is definitely debatable. My guess is first party games will but third party won’t.
In general, Sony is dominating nearly everywhere so there’s simply no reason or incentive for them to take a loss on the PS5 Pro.
The main thing that really hurt the presentation was not having a showcase game for it like they did with PS4 Pro and HZD. If they showed Tsushima 2 running off it, I believe that it becomes a very different debate/conversation.
In all honesty, that’s a smart play. I would love to see Microsoft get the full marketing rights to GTA VI and if anything, see the game get delayed to Fall 2026 so it can launch along side the next Xbox console but that’s highly unlikely to happen and if Sony does have the marketing rights for GTA VI, I don’t blame them for taking full advantage of that. After all, it’s what both companies should be doing. It’s definitely something I would do. lol
To be fair, doesn’t a high end GPU cost like $700+ in of itself? Tech/spec wise, I don’t think the $700 is the biggest issues. The biggest issue is that there was nothing showcased for it and second, people had in their heads $600 so obviously, anything higher would piss them off.
The PS5 Pro IS for the hardcore fans and perhaps some who haven’t bought a PS5 yet and figure that for an extra $200, why not just go with the Pro?
Nothing they tried to showcase impressed or wowed me at all. Plus, every game shown were at least a year old if not more excluding the clips of Rebirth.
If Sony showcased Tsushima 2 or a new Uncharted game or something, I think the presentation would have come across a lot better and there would be less negativity surrounding the price because most would be like, hell yeah, I want that game on the PS5 Pro.
Showing Horizon Zero Dawn in 2016 is what convinced me to trade in my base PS4 and get the Pro model.
If there’s a lot of PS4 games and some PS5 games that you want to play but haven’t done so yet which you obviously haven’t, then I would say yes, it’s worth buying a base PlayStation 5.
I’m someone that goes through all the options before playing. I don’t know how anyone can not check out all the options in games nowadays.
I just checked GameStop online here in the U.S. and as of 7:30pm, the trade in value for the main two PS5 disc editions is $325 ($357.50 if you’re a rewards member). That’s not bad for a console that is four years old (or one year if it’s slim disc version) as once an electronic is opened, the value usually decreases by at least half. and in this case, it’s $75 more and four years later.
Honestly, $700 is expensive but Microsoft is selling their 2TB Xbox Series X for $600 and the specifications are exactly the same as the 2020 model. $100 extra for an extra TB of storage isn’t exactly a bargain. For $100 more, I would go with the PS5 Pro because the specifications are simply better and worth more than the extra $100 I would be paying.
I do believe a lot of people here are having fun with the $700 price tag but I hope you guys are ready for the next Xbox console (and PlayStation 6) to cost $800 at launch minimum because come 2026/2028 respectively, you’re talking a brand new and better CPU/GPU than what the PS5 Pro will have, a 2TB SSD and 24GB of RAM and perhaps even 32GB because 16GB of RAM isn’t going to be enough for the next generation consoles.
And no, I don’t see Microsoft taking a loss on their next gen console especially considering the fact that just for an extra TB of storage, they’re charging you $600. I mean come on. $200 more for a far better CPU, GPU and more RAM if anything will probably still be sold at a loss.
I also believe that the consoles will be $800 due to both Microsoft and Sony having Portables that cost $500. I wouldn’t be shocked to see $80 games in the future and Nintendo Switch 2 being $500 wouldn’t surprise me either.
I am someone that will easily pay $800 or even $1000 for the next generation consoles if the specifications and tech are there but I will not spend $700 on a mid-gen refresh when the base model will suffice for the rest of the generation.
EDIT: It’s a trade in deal. I would get $417 including an extra 10% bonus and $25 bonus but the deal ends on the 14th. Hoping they bring this back in October or something because if I can get it for less than $300 new day one, I probably would. lol
NOTE: For anyone who’s like, WTF? in regards to me, just putting it out there, I owned the PS4 Pro day one after trading in the base PS4 to GameStop and also owned the Xbox One X after trading in the Xbox One S I bought a year earlier. With One X, I bought for State of Decay 2 but dropped the game after 15 hours and only played two games on the console until I traded it in during the Fall of 2019 which were Mutant Year Zero (was day one on Game Pass) and Gears of War 5 also day one on Game Pass.
So yes, I am someone that will buy new consoles. And yes, if Microsoft had a mid-gen refresh, I would buy that one as well. lol
Yeah but as has been pointed out, games are cheaper on PC, they’re often given away free or cheap, and most of all you don’t have to pay for multiplayer.
So if you say a console lasts 5 years, the savings from a PC are enough that you could build a PC that could easily do DLSS 4K/60 better than the PS5 Pro (as DLSS has been through multiple revisions, this is PS’s first stab at it) for about the same cost that is much more versatile and not locked into a walled garden…
I had to credit the Xbox team and the call from Phil and Sarah to double down on a brand-new console rather than waste time money and resources on a mid-generation refresh. That was such a good call after you see what SONY is asking for sharper graphics.
People are quick enough to pile in on Xbox and Phil for making bad calls but Phil, Sarah and Xbox got this one so spot on.
The 700 isn’t too bad. The issue is if you’re not American, then the cost gets silly, as it seems rather lacklustre (it may not be once we know more). Pricing here would be closer to 1200, which is just stupid, really.
Anyway, I’m not getting one, so I have no skin in the game to care.
Yep unsurprisingly, the USA, the one country where Xbox really does challenge Sony, they’ve stuck with a price that works out much better than almost anywhere else - even if it seems steep to Americans it’s nothing compared to the cost elsewhere
Well I guess that’s how monopolies work. In territories where Sony have a credible competitor the price is (somewhat) controlled by that competition and in territories where there is not UK and Europe it is not and we see the biggest rises.
Many here could see this coming a mile off, many elsewhere seem to have been blindsided by it.
Looks like the claims that Switch and Steam deck would act as an effective competitor if Xbox quit hardware were as we knew not correct. As were the ones that absent Xbox hardware competition Sony wouldn’t jump the shark with their pricing.
Yeah, the only way Steam would be a competitor if they were to make a console that is sold at major retailers. Many in the console space aren’t going to build a PC or they’re not going to use the Switch as their main console. If Microsoft bows out, then nobody will step up to challenge because the market is too risky tbh and only Valve might be the option if they try to make a high performance console. I doubt they would attempt that
Destin did an interesting video breaking it all down.
For example the part where they talk about ray tracing in Jedi Survivor was completely flawed as you couldn’t see the ray tracing in the water. It was just the standard reflections we have now.
And I agree they needed to show newer games, showing TLOU2 which I completed back on the PS4 is not a selling point to get a system which is meant to be exceeding the PS5 (The PS5.5 ).
It is fucking rich to see people BLAME Xbox for Sony being out of control. This is a consumer brain washing issue and not an Xbox issues
Currently
Series X was the most powerful console launched this gen at a standard price,
Series S is a great budget console and MS though ahead knowing this gen would not have price reductions,
GamePass is easily the absolute best deal in gaming and has transformed how many people game,
Xbox now has the largest first party in the history of gaming
Xbox put up what on paper is a seemingly unstoppable consumer friendly and vast console eco system.
What this showed this gen is people will buy a bag of shit if it has a Sony name on it. Sony has pretty much brain washed gamers for decades, had a huge hand in Sega going away and drove Nintendo to a completely different business model.
Sony has used very anti consumer and anti competitive practices to get where they are today.
But somehow this is all Xbox’s fault for not being good enough competition to keep Sony in check?
Fuck off with that noise, Xbox brings a very good and more consumer friendly and price conscious alternative to Sony but gamers are just fucking brain washed into think gaming = Sony
This is Sony’s fault and gamers fault for NEVER holding Sony accountable for being literal pricks in the gaming sphere for the last 30 years.
Sony fans you have done this to yourself, have fun on your one console future where Sony holds games and consoles for ransom
