Seeing how they have never done that - If they don’t do that in two years will you promise to come back, prostate dressed in sackcloth, and apologize? After you buy the system and pay $80 for Animal Crossing of course.
They have 3 switchs out right now, LCD, OLED and the no detactable joycon LCD version.
The Swirch 2 having 3 different versions is pretty much a given.
They literally did that with the Switch. What other reason could they have for not going with an OLed panel in the Switch 2 when the Oled model became the standard for the Switch 1?
Look, if you want to ignore the entire history of Nintendo’s business practices, that’s fine, but I’m not going to.
when did they literally do that with the Switch? Are you speaking to the mid-gen refresh when they added a larger screen and made it OLED? To sell us a better switch?
“This is what they do and it works”.
Does the PS and Xbox not do refreshes mid gen? The XSX no because no one is buying the old one but the PS certainly did. Did the 360 not make a pro, the Xone? Did the Xbox make a mid gen refresh with a larger HDD of a TB so they could not optimize the file sizes of their games? Was that microsoft treating it’s customers like shit? Or is it different?
They might make an OLED in four and a half years (the actual number of years before Nintendo added the OLED between the S1). They probably will. But only because every console manufacturer does and has for over 20 years.
Let’s get mad at Nvidia/Amd for make new graphics cards too while we are here.
Sure. How many SKUs does the xbox have? Both the S and X I mean. Since they released two at once. I count 5 not including colors.
Never once did I feel like I was treated like shit because I chose to buy an X over the S nor did I feel like shit when they released the 2TB version last year.
You’re being overly aggressive, while missing the point entirely, maybe touch some grass. Nintendo is using an inferior technology out of the gate, specifically so they can sell you an OLED model when the panels are a dollar cheaper for Nintendo. There is no direct comparison with this, and Nintendo invented the same-generation product refresh; after the absolute killing they made in the Switch generation, there’s no excuse for not including OLED, especially given that their components are all priced at a massive scale (thus cheaper per unit for Nintendo compared to competitors).
“go touch some grass”
Is that aggressive?
“Nintendo is using an inferior technology out of the gate, specifically so they can sell you an OLED model when the panels are a dollar cheaper for Nintendo.”
You just made that up - out of thin air. They have never done that, they have never said they have done that and most of their 150M customers, the most consoles ever sold in history - do not feel that way. I can take a company at their word, in good faith, until they prove otherwise. Nintendo made a switch > it did gangbusters > they made a new switch to sell more switches. You could buy it or not. You weren’t left in the cold if you didn’t. In fact - docked it was pretty much the same.
So my overly aggressive tone, which wasn’t aggressive at all, was simply calling out, through benign words, someone for taking a hot take I’ve read verbatim multiple times over the past two days - was simply taking something that didn’t exist - telling the person why it didn’t exist - because it doesn’t exist.
But really. Any time I make a post refuting (or even talking for that matter), which isn’t aggressive at all, someone else’s post my stalker is sure to follow up since the first day I posted. I make a post and it is a siren’s call. I don’t mind though. If I bother you that much ban me and be done with it - you don’t need to search high and low for an excuse. You obviously don’t like me. Get on with it Daniel.
So anyway… I brought up the Switch 2 game prices to my wife last night to gauge her reaction and interest and she said “fuck that!”, so it looks like I won’t be getting a Switch 2 at launch or anytime soon for that matter. I guess my loincloth can stay in the closet for now.
Sorry Daniel, I respect you and your arguments, but John from DF has said that there’s some decent LCD screens nowadays, so they made that choice probably to keep the cost down (we know now how important it is for people) and balancing energy consumption. OLED can consume more with bright images especially with HDR taken into account. At the very least, we should admit that we don’t know the whole story.
Nintendo have made some weird decisions time and time again, but the Switch 2 feels pretty safe in that regard and the right evolution of the Switch.
I wouldnt expect a 120 FPS, VRR, DLSS, HDR and 4K supported Nintendo machine to be less expensive than what it is.
Controllers and games costs is another story…
I don’t like to bring politic but my God what a fucking train wreck.
it’s kind of impossible not to, this story is inherently political
Tariffs gonna price out the normies and leave all the sweet sweet switch 2 for me!
(this tariff shit is so exceedingly lame and disgusting)
I’m well aware there are some decent LCD screens out there… I own an Ally X. Doesn’t change the fact that a company the size of Nintendo orders parts on a scale most companies could only dream of, which directly brings the price-per-unit down on each panel. I know for a fact what those cost for smaller companies, like Retroid -because they’ve told us, and therefore I’ve got more evidence to suggest Nintendo is cheaping out to save a few bucks on the manufacturing. I’m sorry but John has covered for Nintendo and Sony so many times over the years, I don’t trust his inability to separate his own biases - that includes providing cover for what is arguably a downgrade.
Edit: at the end of the day, it’s not up to John or any other personality to dictate what people think something is worth, and judging by the overwhelmingly negative response (look at literally anything, including Nintendo’s own Treehouse videos which were flooded with talk about the price being too high), I’m clearly not in the minority here. When you’re still offering less features and power than the competition and you remove a component people have come to expect (which the previous product had), while having games at higher prices than their counterparts, there’s no defense. This is pure greed, and based on some reports, Nintendo is already scrambling.
3, 2 all digital, 1 physical. With the All digital XSX selling for less, not more.
I personally dont give a shit about the Switch 2 screen. Im not sure my switch has ever left the dock in 8 years.
That’s fine and good for you, but Nintendo has stats on usage which show most use it in handheld the majority of time (I’m in that same boat), so there are a hell of a lot of people that do and would care. Just don’t know why people have to act like Nintendo doesn’t deserve ample shit for some absurd blunders… especially given the state of most economies atm.
Is steam ripping people off selling a system with a worse LCD and less power for about the same price (pre-tariff nonsense)?
Nintendo deserves shit for a lot of things. But I dont see the screen as being one of them. The screen is really good, and at least as far as I can find I dont see a lot of 8" 120hz, VRR, OLED panels in portable devices of any kind.
Most impressions from yesterday are that the screen looks really nice. And I doubt the vast majority of switch owners outside of the perpetually angry online gamer crowd are going to care in the slightest that its not an OLED. These people play shit like Pokemon at 15fps with some of the worst graphics of the last 20 years, and love every second of it.
The AYN Odin 2 Portal has a 7” 120hz OLED and sells for $329 base, so again some of you need to do a bit more research before defending the multi-billion dollar company. This is AYN we’re talking about and they can do it ffs, this is purely down to Nintendo being cheap. Also, the Deck comparison is absurd… that was the same generation and is no different from the Switch Lite, Switch, and Switch OLED. This is an entirely new generation years later than the Deck when expectations have been changed… why is that such a hard thing to understand? Some of you bringing some erroneous comparisons that don’t make the point you think you’re making…
So not an 8" inch screen, not vrr, base storage half what is in the switch 2, doesnt come with a dock to connect to an external display, less RAM, and isn’t as powerful or feature rich. This isnt the homerun argument you seem to think it is. Its a lesser product in every capactity other than having OLED in the spec sheet. And it costs 75% of what the switch 2 does. I would argue comparing that device is “absurd”.
You should be a bit more careful about implying that people just arent capable of understanding something just because they don’t fall in line with your outrage. Particularly when your counter example doesn’t even meet the criteria that was specified (and isnt anywhere close to a comparable overall hardware package).
Im completely fine with not finding value in anything the switch 2 is offering because value is relative. If an OLED is important to you and you’re a heavy portable user, I have no qualms with anyone going “This does not meet what Im looking for” and walking away.
And I agree, they 100% will release an OLED version later and it will be more expensive. I agree that the game prices are absurd, charging for a tech demo is absurd, charging for upgrades is absurd. All of that is absurd to the point of being predatory and gross. Its indefensible.
The overall hardware package, in a vacuum to my eye, for the MSRP, is generally…fine. Not mind blowing, just not worth being upset about to me. Its actually ended up being better than I expected it to be, particularly from Nintendo. That isn’t “defending” anything.
And when the tariffs hit and the price jumps to $550 all of that suddenly flies out the window.
