Movies and TV shows thread

Its Q4 2024.

This animation style always creeped me out.

Haha what used to creep me out as a kid was the farm owner that cooked the pies :joy:

Any else watching Ashoka? Have you been enjoying it? Personally, the characters are pretty flat imo, but hopefully things pick up once Thrawn and Ezra finally show up.

I didn’t grow up loving Star Wars so maybe I’m in the minority here, but these deep fake / de-aged characters like Anakin and Luke aren’t interesting. I guess next episode Ashoka will emotionally resolve any guilt she may have for Anakin’s fate, but I’m not expecting that to be very interesting.

I think Dave Filoni has completed his metamorphosis into George Lucas Jr. I mean that in the best way possible.

Latest Cobra Kai season is fun, but sadly has quite too many meh scenes too, especially the ones with the kids. When it’s about Johnny, Kreese, Daniel or Silver it’s always entertaining and Chozen of course too, but I could do without teenager problems, lol.

Also that pilot. Miguel in Mexico looking for his father. He seems a kind guy helping someone and he goes “dad?”

Bruh!

Yeah, there’s probably a handful of people named Hector there. :joy:

Best hope he doesn’t stroll upon…

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was a decent movie. It’s one of those late sequels that isn’t offensive in any way, and I appreciated getting one more decent adventure with this beloved character. The movie was way too long though, but the last act really carries the rest of the film. The writers should have gotten us to the last act way sooner because that part of the film was very interesting and ripe for new ideas.

All that said, I believe Indiana Jones really shouldn’t be a movie franchise anymore. If Machine Games knocks it out of the park, the future of Indy is video games. Indy inspired Tomb Raider which inspired Uncharted. Now that Uncharted is basically done (at least the main story I hope), it’s time to go full circle with Indy taking the reins. I want a 3d remake of Fate of Atlantis (FF7R style but not a trilogy adaptation of one game).

Indiana Jones as a movie franchise is dead after that Box Office performance.

Barely seen it marketed anywhere

Just saw the movie Dogman in the cinema theater. It’s made by Luc Besson who also made Leon.

I loved it. Especially as a huge dog person, but it’s a lot more than that. Fantastic acting by the lead actor too. I saw that the RT score is super low, yet another example of why RT doesn’t matter for shit!

The last episode of Ashoka was exceptional. Must watch for any Rebels fans. Loved the gold Kintsugi style stormtroopers Thrawn had. Actors aren’t stiff anymore either. Really heartwarming moment this episode.

The Continental episode 1 is nice. It has the Wick vibe but at the same time it’s different because it’s the 70s, the guy who plays young Winston does a good job with the sarcastic remarks. He definitely studied Ian Mcshane’s acting, good stuff.

Watched a few really great movies recently on Netflix:

Midnight Run - This movie has to be considered a classic right? Great cast of characters, very funny, good action, and heartwarming. Stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pantoliano, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto and Dennis Farina. All of them were great.

U-571 - Solid submarine flick with a fun twist half-way through. Stars Matthew McConaughey.

Robin Hood (2010 with Russel Crowe) - I have a fondness for sword-and-sandal films, and this one didn’t disappoint. Oscar Issac played a dickhead king so well.

I finally got around to watching The Batman (2022), and I can’t decide if I really liked it or not. On one hand, the art direction and overall tone of the film was fantastic. On the other hand, it occasionally felt like I was watching a Joel Schumacher Batman film, which is… not great. It was also an entire hour too long and I can’t think of a single thematic or character progression reason for it being as long as it was.

I thought Pattinson was surprisingly decent as Batman and Jeffrey Wright and Zoe Kravitz were both good as Jim Gordon and Selena Kyle respectively. Also, I had no idea Colin Farrell was the Penguin until I looked up it up after the fact. Pretty much every other character seemed off and as much as I like John Turturro, I thought his representation of Falcone was incredibly weak.

Anyway, decent film, but it feels like it could have been so much better with some different choices and maybe some better writing.

The Expandables 4

Thought it would be horrible, because Megan Fox is now the lead of the Expandables, which I don’t see as a good thing at all. She can’t act for shit and more often than not she’s just annoying. Plus 3 already wasn’t great.

But it was actually quite fun, because basically it’s The Expandables : Jason Statham, because the rest of the group pretty much plays a side role and that’s fine with me. Stallone is barely in it, just some scenes at the start with Statham which are very enjoyable, I guess Stallone is pretty done with these movies too.

Iko Uwais is in it too, he’s the actor from the superb The Raid movies but he’s severely underused here. He can do so much more but his role was eh, except for one scene. Can we get a The Raid 3? But Statham saves the movie, his action scenes are nice, he kicks ass. 50 Cent as expected doesn’t contribute much.

I’m so glad this turned out well. Then again, everything with John David Washington in it has been quality, to my knowledge. He’s great in this too, the kid as well. Good story, not one boring moment. For two hours you get a great movie.

Reptile on Netflix was engrossing despite there being a few plot threads that go nowhere and some stuff not making perfect sense at the end. It’s also a bit long. I only recommend it if you like detective stories with good acting, characters and atmosphere and aren’t too bothered by some writing issues. I enjoyed it on the whole. It stars Benicio del Toro.

I think they tried to emulate a modern take of Chinatown with that ending but it didn’t work.
