I’ve got to agree. While I could make out the details and all, I did check to make sure the TV and player didn’t enter a screen-saver mode. Instead it was purely “artistic directorial control”.
I was watching this in an entirely pitch dark room.

Fair enough
One thing I’d mention is that I’ve found that not all apps from each provider are created equally; by that I mean, the Xbox/PS HBO Max app is leagues behind the apps you find on Smart TVs and Apple TV. Neither console apps support Dolby Vision or even 4K… so that’s the first thing I would suggest taking a look at. I’ve watched HotD on my TV’s apps and haven’t noticed the issue being described but I remember when I tried watching The Batman on the Xbox app and it was a overly-darkened mess.
Wow, that’s just bad. Wtf? I don’t have HBO but I do use Netflix, Prime and Disney on Xbox. Those at least are 4K, Netflix I know for sure because you can check it. HDR too.
Yep, I kept going through every possible setting to fix it while watching Batman and then confirmed it with this:
It’s absolutely ridiculous given the fact that consoles helped streaming services, like Netflix, catapult as quickly as they did; remember the 360 had Netflix before things like the Apple TV and other similar devices existed.
Hmmm, I can’t view it because apparently it’s not available in my country yet. Odd. Pretty sure we got HBO Max here now. Ah well.
Absolutely great advice.
When I said I had to check on screen-saver mode, it’s because it goes from a scene with actual colorful, bright, sharp, contrast, and details to well pretty much nothing but shades of gray. It was that large of a difference between the scenes.
I was watching on a pristine Panasonic Plasma 1080p SDR set via the top end model 4K Chromecast with GoogleTV via the official HBOMax application. It wasn’t any better from the "DirectTV Stream " recording either. Maybe they just frak’d their SDR stream? My experience is exactly identical to what was captured in screenshots/pics other’s posted.
Dahmer on Netflix is damn good. Evan Peters is amazing in his role, wow.
Random thoughts on Hot D:
I was surprised to see a character, Laenor, happily sail off into the sunset in a GoT show. Although, it did cost the life of a random NPC.
I knew beforehand that Aemond would lose an eye this episode, and I was so worried that we were going to see some horrifying eye gore because of how violent this show has been.
The actor playing Otto is so good. He’s basically the Tywin Lannister of HotD.
Might be a regional thing regarding the HBO Max app, as in Spain it supports all of those features on Xbox Series X.
Andor has been really exceptional with its’ production, acting, dialogue and character development. Disney moving away from 6 episode seasons to 12 for Andor really lets the story progress more naturally. Also, the practical sets go a long way. So far, it’s on par with a lot of great HBO shows in terms of quality character writing and production imo.
After Book of Bobba Fett and many of the MCU shows (Moonknight, Falcon + Winter Soldier, etc.), I was pretty down on the quality of the shows on Disney+ (I found those shows to be terrible). For now, I’m pretty much completely done with giving the MCU shows a chance (although I may still watch Loki Season 2), but I’ll keep up on all of the Star Wars stuff.
Finished Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix. I highly recommend it.
It’s of course very disturbing and unsettling since it’s all a true story, not some sick, twisted made up horror story.
I actually enjoyed the mcu shows I saw (Loki, Falcon and Winter Soldier, Hawkeye) more than I did Obi-Wan, but I’m liking Andor a lot. Obi-Wan almost felt like a show that didn’t need to exist, other than to show how Leia knew to contact him during A New Hope, which was disappointing as I love the character and have been a star wars fan for longer than I’ve liked anything from Marvel. I wish they had found a different story to tell there, though I thought the actress who portrayed Leia was very good and I love seeing Jimmy Smits (West Wing!) as Bail Organa.
I’m pretty new to Star Wars (never got into them as a kid), and yeah Obi-wan could have been much better. I think Obi-wan suffered a lot from only having six episodes (and a couple of those episodes were filler). A flashback episode would have been nice to flesh out the Obi-wan and Anakin relationship like in Clone Wars but in live action instead.
My hope is that Andor is kind of the turning point for Disney+ where covid, poor choices and other factors no longer hamper these shows so much.
Prime received a new UI recently and I noticed they actually have a “leaving soon” section. Can Netflix add this already? It’s way overdue.
Bodes very well for the Fallout TV show (next year I would guess). If the show delivers, this will be big for the IP.
Hopefully it has a interesting protagonist though, one that is likeable, can act, doesn’t just have one expression pretty much all throughout the show. Yeah, sorry, but I can’t stand the Galadriel character. And that expression, the rare few times she tries to show some emotion like joy it looks very…off, for lack of a better word. Overall I’m not really enjoying the show much. If I were to compare this to Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy it’s just a world of difference.
The trilogy has interesting characters, once I can care for, don’t feel or seem cringe or cheesy, that show emotion, fine acting etc. The show’s acting is more like a soap opera in comparison. Look at GoT and now HotD for example, man what a difference in quality all around. Rings of Power has nice locations and that is about it for me.
Andor
It’s been holding my interest ever so slightly. I’m not getting other people holding it in such high regard, if I’m being honest. Still has a chance to really blow me away by the end. Especially is the plan they are working on is something that secretly amounts to far more than what amounts to…an annoyance for the Empire. Otherwise, can’t understand why they are bothering doing something that has them so stressed out and unable to trust one another
Andor is the first D+ show that doesn’t feel like it was made in a factory warehouse.
Hopefully it can keep up this quality.
Werewolf by Night was pretty dope.
