He might be the first journalist to be constantly wrong though. He consistantly has bad takes to a point i think he trolls the userbase he’s supposed to cater too.
I wouldn’t take his comments, especially on a podcast, too seriously and I don’t think he’s trolling on purpose, he’s just expressing his views which can be really bad, yes.
I remember right after the ABK acquisition was announced Jez was taking tons of heat from the community because he thought CoD would stay multiplatform. Nearly everyone else thought he was an idiot and there was no way this would happen. “You don’t spend $68 billion to leave things the same,” was the conventional wisdom. But Jez, literally from day one, was firm CoD would stay multiplat.
So, he is not always wrong.
I agree that he seems to delight in being a contrarian - and he does frequently seem to be trolling the fanbase. But if you listen to the podcast (which is admittedly a huge time commitment) you can usually figure out when he is serious and when he is “trolling.”
I think the theme of Jez’s analysis is that he tries to approach things from a business perspective, not from a fan’s perspective. Those perspectives can overlap, but they are not guaranteed to be the same. With that said, I don’t always agree with his business perspective - but he does sometimes have an angle on things that I had not considered.
Jez does have terrible takes…a lot of terrible takes but the Blizzard/ABK stuff isn’t one of them, I wouldn’t be surprised if the survival game and other future things are multiplat
MS is being aggressive with the content that belongs to them, canceling the development of RedFall for PS5 is an indication of what they will do with ABK games that have not announced platforms.
Social media has really evolved the role of reporters in order to stay relevant. Their reactions are almost as important to their relevance as their actual reporting. Social media dictates those reactions need to be almost immediate.
Thats why you can’t give as much weight to their reaction. Its purely that, its a reaction just like you or I would have. There are sure to be misses.
It’s not even the reaction that’s important. It’s the ability to drive engagement. In today’s environment negativity drives more immediate engagement which snowballs. This drives more clicks, which in turn generates more ad revenue. It’s why social networks thrive on toxicity.
It’s off topic but the Jez hate is super unwarranted. IMO him, Klobrille and Tom Warren all faced the same wave of hostility and follow up wave of apathy from people who should have done something it.
Those guys have leaked next gen console specs, studio acquisitions, game announcements (I think) and their major “crimes” have been being Xbox focused reporters and fans.
Tom’s reacted to the over the top hostility and criticism by basically just aloofly waving it off. Being an established body for a big publication probably makes that much easier. Klobrille basically walked away, I don’t blame him either, his early work basically built Era’s reputation and drove site traffic/references. Then the community treated him like shit and admins let them.
Jez is a little different. He’s obviously trying to make a career of it, without the benefit of Tom-like credentials backing him up. He can’t walk away like Klobrille did. I feel bad for him. He got treated like shit for years for being Xbox centric. And when he tried to soften his image he still gets treated badly, but by even more propels.
It’s already hard to be a lightening rod in the Xbox community. No idea why Xbox people have decided to make it even harder.
I feel like if it’s a brand new not fully announced IP no matter the genre, is stupid to not make it exclusive.
not making the new IP exclusive day 1 will just cause issues later down the track if they do want it to be exclusive. If they release the second game later and it’s exclusive there will be all this backlash about how they’re pulling it away from Sony and how it’s unfair.
How often does big new IP come out that can be exclusive, the biggest problem for Xbox is exclusive games. They will only be digging a deeper hole if they don’t secure more exclusive games faster. With games taking longer and longer to make how often are we gonna see new successful IP that is exclusive, probably not very often.
Another thing people seem to gloss over is games don’t need to be on all platforms like Playstation to be successful, just look at Roblox for example, that ain’t on PlayStation which is crazy considering how big it is.
It could go either way and I don’t honestly care but I do think Microsoft should probably try get as many exclusives as they can to boost their market share. If Microsoft can boost their market share with exclusive games and game pass they might grow enough to not even need Sonys customer base to help with player counts on MP games. I think at the end of the day for Microsoft to grow the Xbox console business (which I know is a small part of the pie) they need exclusive games and giving up the opportunity for that to just make more upfront cash doesn’t seem like the right way.
Thanks for coming to another TEDtalk of mine also just wanting to make it clear I don’t care what they do and I can see the arguments on both sides although I do tend to be more exclusively leaning if I had to pick.
I think a lot of the “exclusivity” Microsoft sees isn’t in its hardware anymore but in the value offered by Game Pass. Games can be released on other platforms but they’re day one Game Pass titles. That’s the advantage for Xbox. But it’s not an identical policy across the board for all their releases, for example we can still expect the next Elder Scrolls to be completely exclusive to Xbox & PC, IMO.
I also think we’re in peak console wars right now (just look at something like IGN’s recent Redfall video… i.e. Sony’s hardcore cultists have grabbed their pitchforks & they’re fighting everything & anything with “Xbox” in the title). It’s very difficult for game creators to even show their work in this climate because a minority of nutters have had their brains melted by console warrior rhetoric & poison the game scene & its conversations. But, it wasn’t always like this & a lot of the blame rests on the shoulders of Jim Ryan.
Replace him with a more pragmatic, professional Sony CEO & suddenly the ‘bad relationship’ between Sony & Microsoft can dissipate immediately, along with offering new business opportunities for both.
Its the same lame crap, Any Xbox focused journalist or podcaster gets shit on by Sony fans 24/7 but any focused on Sony is praised to the Heavens, tired of that crap its pretty much the same reason this site and forum were formed to give us a place to go without the constant trolling from Sony fansl
I think whatever personal opinions people hold regarding exclusivity and how Xbox hould handle it - the thing to remember is that Xbox benefits either way. If a title is exclusive it draws people to the platform, if it’s multiplat it can potentially draw a bigger audience and bring in more revenue.
There’s definitely other benefits for each approach too depending on the game too - being exclusive has helped Bethesda focus on less platforms for Starfield and they’ve been directly aided in development by Xbox, meanwhile by keeping Call of Duty multiplatform they ensure it’s harder for any competition to rise up in the games absense.
It’s a win win either way as far as I’m concerned. From the looks of things Xbox is always going to have multiplatform games, but they’re going to have plenty of exclusive games no matter what. So perhaps it’s not worth people getting quite so riled up when others have a differing opinion to them, there’s no real wrong answers here.
He’s got a constant habit of speaking on things he shouldn’t before he’s done any research which for someone in his position and how he’s looked at in the community isn’t a good look
Just saw this, so maybe this is why Sony is worried about getting a version of COD with less features lol. Seriously, to make exclusive content for a game like ghostwire is just nasty. It’s not like the game was going to sell well and if it wasn’t on gamepass it could’ve caused people to skip it do to missing content
