Indeed as of now PS5 has no install base. Just pre orders. Sony has no leverage to point to numbers.
Yep indeed we didn’t really see that coming now he lust be laughing and happy seeing all the reactions online and here. He deserves it him and all the MS team.
Without even speaking about what’s remaining to come, we still have surprises to come yet.
I’m one of the people saying MS might still release some of these games on PS, but it isn’t because the PS install base is/will be large, well not exactly anyway. Traditional thinking is that there is only a small pool of console players and MS and Sony must fight over them. Well, I think MS has learned from Minecraft that this really isn’t the case. They’ve seen that wider availability actually increases sales on all platforms.
IMO If MS makes the next Elder Scrolls exclusive to the Xbox then it won’t sell as many units (on the Xbox) as it would if it were available everywhere. Now MS may be okay with this if they want the console sales to increase, but it comes at the cost of limiting the reach of the game. If the game is available everywhere it has a chance at becoming a cultural phenomenon. It’s like GTA, there is a reason that game is a top seller perpetually.
Essentially MS could make everything exclusive to the Xbox but I doubt that brings them a bigger return in console sales/increased user base than if they were able to pull off GTA level of sales for the next Elder Scrolls due to it being everywhere such that everyone knows what it is.
More Xbox sales = more Game Pass subscribers. The Xbox brand will never grow without big exclusive games.
Minecraft is a very special case and it was already on every platform prior to MSFT acquisition. I think it will be more complex with post 2021 games. Microsoft will want to push more its XBOX ecosystem. Will Sony and others allow cross play, content bought elsewhere available on their platform (takes away some of their revenue), xbox login and greater integration with XBOX platform? These will be the challenges to xbox games being available on competing platforms. Its much easier with a pure streaming service, such as Netflix, where nothing is purchased, everything is rental whilst you stay subbed.
How did they keep the lid on this one? Like, there wasn’t a peep. Are there any hints that insiders dropped that in hindsight could have been applied to this?
Ah but MS has never really been (only) about Xbox. The original reason for the Xbox was to prevent the death of PC and to keep MS a central part of software/games development. They don’t actually want to operate like Sony and in the past has been working against themselves trying to do the traditional console thing.
They are going to put their games on PC and other places but there are going to be so many games that no one is going to give a shit. Does anyone care if Steam has exclusives or loses an exclusive? All anyone cares about is if games they want to play are coming to Steam. I think this is Microsoft’s goal and we’ve seen it starting already “When’s it coming to Game Pass?”
Also interesting to note Xbox now has 2 popular Service based games to add to Game Pass. The Elder Scrolls Online which is probably the second or third biggest MMO behind Wow and FF14 and Fallout 76 which, despite being garbage at launch has apparently gotten better with the Wastelanders expansion.
Between that and Destiny 2+ Expansions + their already existing games Minecraft/Sot/Forza/AOE etc
Xbox is stacked with the service based games on Game Pass
I forgot about that nonsense. Hopefully Microsoft stops using him to present shows because I feel there are better personalities to use
If that’s the case I will leave Xbox. This generation was very hard to me, the brand is not popular in my country and if that continues next gen I will have to leave.
Here’s the thing, I think part of the reason they are doing is is because the Xbox brand isn’t popular in many countries or consoles in general aren’t easily available at all. That is why they will sell their games everywhere. For some places it is near impossible to get a new game console and so many countries rely on the grey market, or just game one or two generations behind. The message boards being USA-centric tend to forget about this I think.
Exclusives are cool for bragging rights and all, but they artificially make it even harder on gamers around the world. If games are available in more places, it just means more chances for people to find a way to get to play the games.
This 100%.
Microsoft/Spencer would be making a mistake by putting the bigger games especially single player like Fallout 5, The Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, Wolfenstein III and whatever else down the line on PlayStation 5 because you’re not getting people to buy into your eco-system when they can just buy it on the other platform.
Fallout 76, ESO, etc. make sense to be on both platforms so they can make more money. Two of the biggest criticisms towards Xbox has been 1) lack of first party studios and games, and 2) lack of single player focused games. Bethesda solves both of these issues easily.
Best of all, you can play them all day one on Game Pass. 12+ hours to go until pre-orders and im even more hyped than I was before. Only launch day will surpass today for me.
Same as you MS need to keep these in the Xbox ecosystem best of both worlds. Would attract more people to the hardware too and additional sales.
I’m tired and excited at the same time want to take a nap but won’t afeaid to miss rhe preorder and scared to see the MS Store telling me sold out
Thank you. MS just dropped 7.5Billion in cash and we still have people “concerned” over their financials and their ability to recoup their investment.
Like you said the generation starts at zero so any previous install base counts for nothing. They have a solid ecosystem (PC, Xbox, Gamepass, XCloud) and there is no doubt in my ming a lot of Sony folk will migrate over to one of those even if it’s just a second option.
I have just over 12 hours before pre-orders open up. Set an alarm clock. That’s what im doing. Getting up at 8am EST gives me three hours to get ready to go to GameStop with a slim chance of getting it online before going to GameStop since online pre-orders could always open up early.
Pre-orders start at 11am EST.
8 AM Pacific Tiime (according to Xbox on Twitter and Store chat), 11 AM Eastern.
Someone, anyone, please correct me if I’m wrong!
No, you’re not wrong. I edited my post. I’m getting tired. LOL.
I’m gonna preorder online since I already put money on my account don’t wanna see it go to waste.
Anyway, I think they have other acquisitions in store…
I hope so. Techland, The Astronauts and Asobo preferred. Hehe.
