It is not yet. Aksys Games owns the English rights so it’ll be up to them.
I just finished Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. Absolutely loved it.
I started this series with Cold Steel I and II. Then, on advice from this forum, I backed up to Trails in the Sky and the Crossbell games.
I already own Trails to Azure and Cold Steel 3 and 4. Looking forward to diving into those soonish then moving on to Reverie.
I do not have a huge history with JRPGs. I’ve completed three Final Fantasy games (7, 10, and 16), Lost Odyssey, and a tiny handful of others. So far, Trails is definitely my favorite JRPG series. I have been consistently amazed by the quality of the character writing and how sweet and earnest the series is. I’m not sure there is an ounce of cynicism in the games I’ve played, which is very refreshing.
Don’t get me wrong, I can enjoy dark and edgy stories as much as anyone - but I don’t need every game to be that way. There is something about the kind and gentle nature of Estelle, Lloyd, and the entire Trails cast that really strikes a chord with me. The turn-based battle system is absolutely S-tier as well - so between the characters, writing, and combat these games have a lot going for them.
Highly recommended for those who haven’t played it yet.
That’s balanced out by Sky 3rd being the darkest game in the series and honestly probably one of the darkest video games ever made.
Zero is in my top 3 favorites of the series. Sky SC, Sky 3rd, and Zero being those 3, funny that those are in chronological order, what a damn hot streak that was. For top 5 I’d put Kuro 1 (very close to Zero for me) and either Azure or Cold Steel 1 in there.
The battle system in Cold Steel 3 to Reverie is one of my favorites of any JRPGs, look forward to that
It’s been a little bit since I posted in this thread. However that doesn’t mean I’ve been slacking!
First off, today I finally received my copy of Atelier Marie (had some postal service issues in my part of Canada due to flooding… my area wasn’t hit that hard thankfully)
So once again, that’s another for the collection. At this point if they started releasing these games on Xbox physically it would be hard to stop myself from still buying a Switch copy for the sake of this collection lol
As the back of the box advertises, it is a “carefree and cozy RPG that isn’t about saving the world.” The game is pretty short (10 hours or so) so it will be refreshing to play a short JRPG.
For what I’ve been playing:
I started playing “Nayuta no Kiseki” on Switch. It’s pretty fun, the levels are kind of set up like in Super Mario or Kirby or something, with a world map with stage select and with 3 collectables and a treasure chest to find per stage, with each region leading up to a boss stage. There is RPG elements like leveling up and equipping gear and skill customization. The game is quite like the older Ys games too with platforming and similar combat.
The bosses are pretty cool, good spectacle. I am up to Chapter 4 out of 8 in the game.
Note that this is the JP version released last year (I am following the story along just fine I should add ). NIS America will be releasing this game next month in English.
Also I finally started playing Persona 4 Golden on Xbox a little while back and made it up to the end of Risette’s dungeon. I’m liking the game a lot, this is my first time playing Persona since P5 Vanilla in 2017. Great soundtrack and I’m liking the PS2 era graphics lol. I think most people in this thread already know how great this game is but yes I am finally getting around to it haha.
It’s been a bit dry for this thread lately, with Eiyuden Chronicle getting delayed, no sign of Suikoden HD, etc… However with the recent Square Enix news and Xbox TGS now only a month away, let’s hope to have lots of content to add here
TGS is in late September right? So is anyone betting that we will be seeing a bunch of ports from franchises that were not previously available for Xbox? If so, the likely candidate is Shin Megami Tensei, other Sega JRPG that comes to mind that Sega could potentially port could be the rest of the Valkyria Chronicles games, which i feel like would be great for the franchise. Although unfortunately i don’t think the same could be said about the likes of Sakura Wars, but hey i have been proven wrong on this things before so who knows.
I know that many are talking about Nihon Falcon bringing their games to Xbox, but other than the YS series i have not seen much fanfare for Trials, which do me is more shocking as i thought that would be one that Xbox should try to bring as quickly as possible. Hopefully the team at Xbox can bring this series soon.
Speaking of series, do you think that the Disgae franchise would be a potential port for Xbox this year, or is it more likely Ys as rumors have spread?
On twitter, i know that many are clamoring for .hack making their debut on xbox, however others are asking the same for the Mana franachise. Is there a likelyhood that we see either one on the show? Am more incline with .hack cause of CyberConnect2’s relationship with Xbox as of late.
By the way, which JRPG franchise or series do you guys wish do see Xbox get ports outside of the ones talked about constantly like Atelier? Am talking about stuff like Summon Night, which has garnered my attention as of late.
Sakura Wars PS4 will never be ported to anything unfortunately. Sega doesn’t port their flops and the game is so old now that sales and interaction would be miniscule.
Ys and Trails are a package deal really, if they get one they get the other. I guess Ys might have more excitement behind it because it’s a series where you can jump in anywhere while Trails is a “have to play them all” series. Maybe even Disgaea games would be a part of such a deal because it’s all the same publisher (NIS America)
.hack is less of an “Xbox” thing and more of just a push for them to remaster all the old games for all platforms. If that actually did happen then yes they would be on Xbox as it wouldn’t be one of Bandai’s simple quick and cheap “old PS4 game to Switch” ports they do that skip Xbox.
It’s hard to think of less talked about JRPG series I’d like to see come over. Main reason Atelier and Falcom games come up I think is because these series have at least broken into a couple million sales, beyond those you do start getting into really niche territory. I guess my answer (it won’t happen) would be the Utawarerumono series because it’s one of the most epic VN/RPG series I ever played (closest thing to filling the Trails void for me) and it’s started going again with the new “Monochrome Mobius” prequel which is a more proper JRPG (and the ending suggests another one is coming). Funnily enough this is another NIS America published series (on console, PC is a different publisher, it also used to be published by Atlus USA).
And it looks like for Atelier, we won’t have to wait till TGS to see the fate of if it comes to Xbox or not. This is basically the last chance (if it’s not just a remake of the Atelier Marie sequel) because if this is a new proper subseries with new protag then it would be the best game to start with (while I would guess Ryza ports at TGS, but if this new game is not coming then I doubt MS signed any kind of deal). Atelier Marie just came out but it’s a really low budget remake so it’s not the best game to start with on Xbox.

Lets hope that it becomes a reality. Mostly because i think the series deserves to be played at different consoles and managed to get more fans.
I mean look at how Persona and Like A Dragon are doing at Xbox. Effectively became mainstay JRPGs for Xbox fans to enjoy. Especially the latter.
By the way, have there been any news or updates in regards to that Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood games? If so, what is the possibility of Xbox trying to get marketing rights for one of the two or both? Am inclined a bit more with Penny Blood cause i feel like it would sit right at home with Xbox marketing. As for Armed Fantasia, well i know they approached Sony but were declined so i don’t think they would be the ones to do the marketing for it.
Chained Echoes is so good. Currently on Act 3 and I adore this game. Insane how it’s a one man project.
I believe that Chained Echoes and Crosscode are must play for JRPG fans.
Chained Echoes is more of a classic turn based JRPG while Crosscode more an action and puzzle oriented JRPG.
Both are/were on Game Pass. Highly recommend.
Chained Echoes is really great. Look at the reviews on the Xbox store, the guy responds to them lol
Definitely, I started the game on Game Pass, loved it so much I bought it. I’m currently playing through it in New Game+ on PC as I slowly make my way through it.
I saw it as well on the MS store. The guy worked for 7 years to make this amazing game. He said in an interview that he was sick for almost a month after the release lol.
I’ve been playing Octopath Traveler and find myself struggling to figure out how to advance the story beyond the collecting of various party members. I guess I’m not finding the “chapter 2” of each character, and it’s a little frustrating.
The first one? Chapter 2 for them appears once you beat their first chpater and another chapter of a different character.
Open the map screen and it shows the location of everyone’s next chapter.
Thanks @saintsflow20 @ShinMegamiTenseiX , I figured it out. I’m just dense and didn’t realize you had to have the character with you in your party trigger the event. Also couldn’t remember how to swap them (the pub) but once I did it’s smooth sailing.
I finished this game. JP Switch version, doing all side quests and keeping up with all the NPC dialog. Took about 45 hours.
This was a great and addictive little game. There’s something particularly addictive about 100%ing stages which gives you stars to fill out your training manual to unlock more skills.
The story was a typical Falcom fare. Actually, this game is basically Tokyo Xanadu’s precursor in all ways including story (only this game is quite a bit better lol). The same story beats and even having an “after story” chapter. By the way this game has nothing to do at all with the other Trails/Kiseki games.
Because this is an early 2010s Falcom game, the soundtrack completely delivers (current Falcom is struggling a bit on that).
The New Game + adds a ton of new content, new stages, new gear to collect, even new NPCs to talk to with a new plotline. I got started on that immediately lol.
8.5/10 and I recommend it if anyone was wondering about picking up the English NISA release next month.
Time to get back to Persona 4. I was ripped away from it by Nayuta no Kiseki and Master Detective Archives Rain Code, finished both of these now.
Hey guys i got a question. Is Final fantasy VII Remake a good starting point for someone who never played a final fantasy game before? Thank you
With the exception of the direct sequels they’re basically all standalone, so any point is as good as another.
The only issue with starting with VII remake is that one of the more interesting aspects of the game is how it deviates from the original. Remake is not just a straight retelling of the original’s plot.
I don’t think you need to have played the original to appreciate the remake (at all), but you might plan to watch some YouTube videos about the differences in the game after you finish remake.
Do you prefer games with classic or modern sensibilities? If you prioritize action, graphics, spectacle then 7R is a great starting point. Or even 15. 10 is probably the best balance of old/new in the series, also a good one to start with. I grew up with the older games and have played all the mainline, but if I’m looking at it without rose colored glasses I’d say look at PS2/360 and beyond era titles and choose one that looks most interesting.
