I don’t see much on things like halo infinite, sea of thieves or any other of the Xbox studios gaas from standard media channels my guess is it doesn’t bring enough clicks.
Which without derailing the thread is one of the personal things I think of the “xbox tax” as much as Destin (I don’t hate him or judge him for this) or any of the larger personalities laughing at the idea
On topic with everything, everyone is mentioning it really seems Sony studios were not ready for this type of pivot to gaas and as much as I dislike Sony still want them to do well (competition is key) this makes me feel that unless they sign a bunch of big 3rd party exclusives like ff16 they may have a few barren years (ala Xbox 2022) to deal with
It bothers me how there’s no balance for this kind of coverage. Releasing an unfinished game should invite scrutiny, but it feels life there isn’t much time put into setting the record straight or documenting a comeback. A negative perception of a game shouldn’t be an indelible stain, there should be a chance at redemption outside of No Man’s Sky.
Redfall apparently released in a pretty poor state and was rightfully lambasted for it. An argument can be made about the scale and severity of it but that’s not my point here. I haven’t seen any coverage about the patches it’s received since, which sucks for someone like me who wants to give it a whirl when it’s in a better state. I will admit I don’t go on social media though, so that might be a factor.
I agree that PlayStation will have a few lean years based on what we know. We’re seeing a lot of partnership announcements, which makes me think their own studios don’t have much that’s ready to show right now. It might be wishful thinking but it also makes me think they’re having less success with timed exclusivity.
A big push into GaaS was never going to be popular and I do admire the risk they took and appreciate the necessity of it if their non-GaaS stuff isn’t really bringing in the money they want (not need). I want to say that they tried to do too much too fast in that sphere, but I’m not privy to their financial situation, and maybe they were expecting all but one to fail and still find it worthwhile.
I know that there’s a lot of talk on here about how permissive and forgiving the media and gamers at large are of Sony, but I think that the tables will turn hard and relatively fast if things don’t line up well for them. Content is king and if they don’t have much first-party stuff, they don’t have moneyhats, their GaaS efforts have a rough start, their partnerships don’t yield quality goods fast… what will the vocal fanboy contingent parade around?
Nobody is cattier or more entitled than gamers and nobody holds a grudge as long. Setting a high bar is a double-edged sword in that regard. If public sentiment starts to turn, the media will smell the blood in the water and do what they always do: stir up negativity to make a buck.
Still, that’s a lot of ifs. I doubt - and hope - they don’t come to pass.
(Now that I’ve spent so long on this post, it guarantees that Sony will announce God of War Double Ragnarok, Spider-Man 3, Gravity Rush 3, The Last of Us 3 along with timed exclusivity for GTA 6 and the next Madden at the Game Awards)
Looking back at Jim Ryan last years, things are not well good, but many things are out of his hands. He could not fight the 70B$ offer of MS, it was a hopeless fight even if he was helped by FTC/CMA.
Even Gaas is hazardous and relies a lot on the talents of the teams.
No, his big mistake was to refuse the first deal MS offered 18 months ago to go full force on the buyout objection. Now, Sony has signed a contract, which I think is much less advantageous.
This is a failure in terms of judgment that is on his shoulders, and that kind of missteps is reason for being ejected when you are a top boy.
Thought this was interesting and maybe goes here, but I wonder what kind of consequences this would have for Sony, they’d have to pay more than Microsoft paid for Bethesda in a lawsuit if this actually happens.
It’s hard to say on settlements as the base issue wouldn’t be solved in this specific circumstance unless they open up codes to be sold on other markets
Very unlikely anything happens with this case. About the only point that may cause a headache is what Tim Sweeney said about the most favored nation clause where supposedly they can’t sell cheaper on other platforms then they do on playstation
PlayStation accounts are being ‘permanently suspended’ and no one knows why PlayStation gamers report being locked out of their accounts and games on PS4 and PS5 without any clear reasoning.
Sony fans would just take that as an opportunity to give more money to Sony like Sony is a charity since these banned users will need to create new accounts and re buy all their games.
Looks like Bungie is having a rough time under Sony now, don’t they realize being under Sony is the greatest thing ever and they should appreciate being in the presence of Sony.
I’m getting a Deja vu of what happened between Microsoft and Bungie. This time, however, Sony won’t be as merciful, knowing them( they are not gonna let them leave).
From what snippets I saw being disucssed, there are clauses where if Bungie does not maintain certain minimum performance levels the current board of directors will be dissolved and Sony will control the new board. If/When that happens, the only thing left for any Bungie folks to do is to either leave or welcome their new overlords. They wont have the ability to pick up the company and sell to someone else or go independent again.
Yup, I just saw that. It doesn’t bode well for the future of Bungie, even directly under SIE. A lot of people will leave if they don’t like the direction the company is heading.
