Reminder to get your questions in after you watch episode 2 for this Friday’s podcast.
Yup not that I needed confirmation about this but those reviews were dumb. I loved the 2nd episode just as much as the first, yes not action packed like the first but I wasn’t expecting huge gun fights every episode. Makes me so happy we’ve got a great (imo) Halo TV show so far, I know some will nitpick it or have genuine concerns but for me I’m not like that so I’m easy to please.
Like sure there was a scene with a prison door that looks flimsy as shit and looks like anyone could open it as it didn’t even seem to have a lock but I’m not a tight arse karen that’s going to screech it ruins my immersion and the whole show is a joke.
Gotta say, I liked episode 2 just as much as episode 1. And I figured this might be a down episode based on what the early reviewers were saying, after personally having so few issues with ep 1. I even heard Angry Joe said things specifcally drop off hard in episode 2, and…nope. He’s wrong, per usual. I can’t tell if that guy says things to pander to his carefully curated group of asshole followers, or if he is just a bad take dispenser
One thing I will say, for those hoping Chief at least keeps the helmet on most of the time, you won’t be thrilled as he leaves it off more then he wears it in this episode. Though I found I didn’t have any issue with it as it was happening. It certainly helped get things across better with some of the emotional issues Chief was dealing with. And hey, Speshal Pablo is a good lookin dude. Like Daniel said, not an action packed affair like episode one was, but a very interesting and enjoyable one
-
I ended up really liking Bokeem Woodbine’s character and the whole backstory set up for him
-
I wasn’t sure about the wierd jumpy guy Woodbine’s character introduces Chief to, at first, but I ended up liking where they went with that
-
Hood, seems like he’s going to be pretty close to what we’re used to
-
I liked the underhanded way Halsey got the Cortana initiative green lighted. Seems like something she would do
-
The human covey chick has not gotten too annoying yet
-
I loved the train ride that jumped in to being a ski gondola, very cool
-
And the way they’re explaining Chief’s inner conflict feels believable and something I’m keen on seeing more of
Good episode. We’re 2 for 2
The gondola thing was sick!
Thematically this exactly my kind of show, so barring some major change in direction I’m in it for the long haul.
I also really liked episode 2! My wife asked me one of those hypothetical questions tonight: Which show I would pick to finish watching if I could only finish one of them between the Halo series, the rest of the ‘This Is Us’ final season (we have been watching together for years now), or Moon Knight that we really liked last night? I said Halo all the way because it has been a part of my life for 20 years, and I absolutely couldn’t stand not seeing where they take things the rest of the season. I don’t think she loved my answer because I was willing to choose it over our “date night” ‘This Is Us’ viewing
I hope we see much more from Kwan and Soren again, so far I’m actually quite impressed with this but this episode worries me a bit about the direction they may be going with, I want to see more of life outside of the UNSC in the Halo universe and the bit we saw this episode was exciting, also loved the shot of the big building at the beginning where Halsey was talking with Parangosky with the city behind, beautiful. Just don’t want them to push aside all the possible interesting they could tell of other characters just for a big focus on Chief and Cortana… we’ve had 6 games about that already.
She looks a little bit blueish? There’s hope!
This show has really surprised me, I wasn’t expecting much, but I just finished episode 2 and I loved it. Better than the first episode in my opinion. Really helped flesh out the universe and the characters, and getting all the pieces positioned for the rest of the season.
I was really surprised by how quickly it moved though. I can easily see a version of this show where most of the season we spend on the run with Chief and Kwan, and then in the last episode or two Chief finally learns what the artifact is and that then leads to him turning himself in. Then season 2 would be all about finding and exploring Halo, and possibly destroying Halo.
At this pace we’ll get to Halo in episode 4 or something.
Whatever happens, I’m definitely in.
Episode 3 down
-
Any trepidation, or reservations I had about Cortana’s look were smoothed right over by Jen Taylor’s silky pitch perfect voice. If there was one voice they needed to keep from the games, THAT was the one. It was like comfort food
-
I really like the way they presented her creation and her introduction to Chief. I feel it was a perfect start point which gives them tons of room for a fascinating character arc
-
We got Hunters…or at least Hunter ingredients. And Miranda mentioned Grunts and how chatty they are
-
One compliment I have to give the writers is, despite the fact that they’re dealing with a well established universe, their world building skills are top notch
Slipspace me to episode 4!!!
Yeah felt the same. Hearing Cortana is like coming home. Relly enjoyed the episode
There were some dark and creepy vibes that I actually liked.
When it comes to sci-fi I appreciate good ship porn, and I thought the ships looked pretty sexy. I like the way they are lit and like the way they move. The way that one Covenant ship jumped in was a great shot.
I also thought the show looked fantastic when it came to the sets and costuming. That UNSC loading area and bridge looked great. All of the uniforms are looking good. This episode simply looked great. The YHAMH podcast nailed it when they called it a “high budget scyfy show” in the first two episodes but I think this is one looked more comparable to what you see with the Star Wars shows on Disney Plus. Apart from a few flaws, it looked pretty high budget.
When I saw previews that showed clips with those worm-like creatures I thought that was a depiction of the Flood but I guess I’m wrong about that. It does make me excited about the actual depiction, though.
I could nitpick a few things but my big concern is that this show needs to have three seasons guaranteed at least. We’re 33% through the first season and it was understandably a slow start. We saw the same with The Expanse which pretty much took a whole season to lay out the Universe. Which paid off in later seasons to the point where some consider the best sci-fi ever. Halo is showing a bit of depth in the universe to the point where I really hope there’s at least four or five seasons to tell a big story here. I’m okay with short seasons because there is less filler, but I do hope the universe and arcs within it are able to be explored a bit more than with just a couple episodes.
Also, I liked a lot of the performances. I thought the actors did a great job. It was Natascha and Pablo’s time to shine and I think the characters were represented well, especially with this armourless MC being a bit foreign to me.
I really think that this Halo series is great. This was the best episode yet, and I am so excited to see where things go from here. I was nervous about what it would be like, but man this is easily meeting and honestly exceeding my going in expectations.
Wow… this series is just getting better and better. I really enjoy the world building and the character development so far, we are starting to see more and more of the different characters motivations and personalities.
I like how they are introducing Cortana, who just like the MC is her own version for the series. I never wanted a retelling of the games so I’m thoroughly enjoying being surprised all the time. The development of Master Chief and Cortanas relationship will be very exciting to follow.
Not sold on the Kwan-Soren adventures yet, but I hope it develops into something good.
I liked:
-
Master Chief is excellent. I find it very funny that people who whined about him taking his helmet off, now probably died of heart attacks when he stripped down completely naked, haha.
-
Cortanas personality and voice is great.
-
Kamee is an interesting villain, and we got to see a Hunters leg!
-
Space, ships, equipment etc. look excellent.
Hesitant about:
-
Kwan & Soren. Not very interesting so far, and feels a bit filler.
-
Cortana’s design. Better than I thought from the little we’ve seen before this but still “off” and I don’t like it.
-
Not enough Silver Team.
It really is some solidly written, well executed science fiction, on it’s own
I can’t help but think if we were in an alternate reality where Halo still had not got a show, or it did and it hadn’t started yet. And this particular show was something similar, but different, without the Halo name and with none of the intentional similarities, armor and ship designs etc. People would be praising this out of nowhere new sci-fi show and possibly saying things like “they should hire these guys to do a Halo show” or “When the Halo show comes out, I bet it won’t be as good as this”
And the ones saying that would be a lot of the same guys criticizing it now. Because they’re
A: Too caught up int the original Halo story of the games and books and can’t give the show a fair chance
B: They’re console warriors so…ya know
C: They’re typical Youtube Grifters
Or D, which is a combo of B & C…(cough)Dreamcast Guy(cough)
I agree. My friend from work is definitely category A and won’t even try watching it because he is so bothered by the Halo TV series not being “canon”. I tried to tell him that it is really well done in the cool Halo universe with some fun callbacks to the video games, but he still won’t budge. Halo is my all time favorite gaming IP, and I just can’t see getting hung up so much on things that are ultimately works of fiction and art that is supposed to be for entertainment.
Definitely this!
