Rockstar’s excuses do nothing for me. They have become obsessive perfectionist. Their lack of output is the problem.
That isn’t an excuse, it’s the same reason we ain’t gonna see Elder Scrolls or Fallout as much as we’d like.
So, at the risk of asking a dumb question…
I keep seeing it repeated authoritatively that the game will have to shut down if the source code gets out to the public. Could someone ELI5 why that is? Is it just that it would make it easier to create cheating software?
They take their damn time to make a game.
I really get the feeling, but I also respect the dedication to their art.
Hopefully, they can work faster and without crunch but I’m not sure that’s in the realm of possibility sadly. Not anytime soon.
Yep pretty much.
Exploits, hacks, data breaches and of course copycats (stealing features/mechanics).
They will likely now need to rewrite massive chunks of their code which will add significant delay.

With regards to a game they could work out how to remove the DRM to pirate the game easier and/or bypass any online anti-cheat software (which for a game like GTA Online would potentially kill the playerbase).

If its the source code for GTA Online this opens the door for severe hacks if somebody finds a backdoor.
If you have your credit card number or some shit stored there i would remove that. Better be safe than sorry.

It isnt . 5 years dev time is normal in this gen . Most of xbox game studios have the same dev time . Are they “obsessive perfectionist” as well ? Are they Incompetent too ?

My thoughts exactly, if they can get their hands on this they can basically reverse engineer their own GTA.

Sometimes. But Xbox isn’t on trial here. It’s time to call out Rockstar for their gaming sins. I agree if your point is we should have a new GTA every 5 years. Hell I would take 1 GTA every generation at this point. When is enough enough when it comes to waiting. GTA fans have waited long enough.
