There is nothing wrong with the core cover shooter mechanics, but it’s not enough on its own anymore.
The franchise needs evolution, both to gameplay – more traversal and mobility options, different skills and attributes for different squad members, skill trees and special abilities and so on – and to the ambition of the story as well.
But it is a cover shooter, still the best in its core mechanics, and that shouldn’t change.
I thought they were fine. Fun, sometimes, even though mindless, and I never took Gears seriously ever. I won’t pretend they’re better or worse than 90% of video game stories. The Gears 4 and especially 5 campaigns were just GOOD.
Like as action video games, they were bloody good, and were well made on so many aspects.
@Rumble@Hindle I dont want to plague the projects thread with Gears talk so lete move it here.
@Hindle if Microsoft wants to burn money on games people dont play and waste a very technically competent studio on a middling IP then let them. But this is Gears post 3:
I think TLOU2’s blows it out of the water in terms of how dynamic and immersive it is. You may disagree but I think there’s a clear reason on why the multiplayer scene has all but evaporated in the last 10 years or so.
They’re going to have to innovate on the gameplay loop, they don’t have to fundamentally change it but I expect to see some big changes in Gears 6.
I tapped out after 3 as I always preferred them co-op, but I’m old and have no friends now. I’m currently playing my way through Tactics for the 5th time (I think) and I still love it. I know it’s rap was that is “isn’t X-Com” but I don’t think you have to be X-Com to be a competent tactical shooter.
I do think Gears will continue but it won’t be the main game The Coalition works on and I doubt after Gears 6 there will be another traditional style game for a while. I’m thinking they may make another Gears Tactics or other genre spinoff with an external dev.
There are lots of Gears games on gamepass that will appeal to people old and new to Xbox and gamepass, so I think Xbox will use this opportunity to build their portfolio and make all new IP in that cinematic action style that’s popular right now. This would add fresh exciting content to Gamepass and leave plenty of Gears content for now for Gears fans and new Gamepass users.
Maybe having a 3rd party Remake some of the games could be a good discussion as well. This could be a good candidate if Microsoft is looking to test a studio out that could do things similar to Bluepoint.
No one was “using” Gears 5 to “shit” on TLOU2, we were talking about cover mechanics and how they can update them/make them better and I said that the cover mechanics in TLOU2 are pretty unreliable and clunky compared to Gears and I don’t want that. In Gears everything is about precision, in TLOU2 everything is about eye candy…totally different design philosophies, that’s the difference even if it means less realistic looking animations in Gears.
As far SP gameplay is concerned, TLOU 2 definitely took the TPS crown off Gears.
I’m very much looking forward to Factions to see what tuning and balances they’ve made to multiplayer.
This is pretty much guaranteed.
Not always. It was pretty popular all throughout the first trilogy.
It fell off in part because Xbox itself declined, but also because Gears Judgment failed to resonate before that, and others games in the space as Gears modernised in ways Gears didn’t - in tone, presentation and gameplay.
This is bullshit.
I understand wanting to defend Gears, but that statement could not be further from the truth. It reads like commentary from someone who hasn’t even played the game.
I am sure they will. They can start by improving the enemy AI, add some verticality, destructible covers/environments and why not expand on the weather conditions of Gears 4. They have plenty of time to make Gears 6 the best game they can and I have total faith in this team to create something amazing this time around.
I too wonder if you understand what I am talking about if you disagree with what I said, it’s pretty clear what the goals of each game are and precision is not TLOU2’s focus or strength.
Ima be honest Division 2 and TLOU2 play as good or better than Gears to me. I never felt like any of those where unresponsive and its quite literally identical gameplay.
