Gears Discussion Thread: What should the future of the series be?

they should start with bringing back Full Gears of War name and go up from there.

Like every combat situation in Gears has been the same since the first game. Every single one.

Part of what I liked about Mass Effect Andromeda for example compared to its predecessors was encouraging more movement and use of environment for combat compared to the generic cover shooter of old.

I am trying to understand the survival horror take on Gears…are we talking about Act II of Gears 1 level of atmosphere and direction or inventory management, low on ammo all the time survival horror design? if we are talking about the latter then they better try this in a spin-off or an entirely new IP because Gears even in the first game (which was more horror oriented than the rest of the series) was all about action and brutal combat.

I think destructible cover and maybe more melee weapons could give it a fresh enough feel?

yes

please god no

I think people just mean the tone and direction in general of the first Gears. You can still keep the Gears identity while shifting the tone back to you know … Gears and not whatever 4 and 5 have.

Yeah if we are talking more Gears 1 Act II style then yes I completely agree that it could be really cool to go this way in Gears 6, I really like the darker tone of Gears 1.

Also as you said destructible covers, new melee weapons, some form of verticality and better AI could improve and freshen things a lot. IIRC someone mentioned going the route of an interconnected metroidvania style level design/progression, that could be really interesting to see but also very difficult to pull off in a game (and genre if you like) which relies heavily on action packed pacing. Still I’d love to see someone try that in a 3rd person shooter like Gears.

Horror as a theme stopped being a thing since Gears 2 (excluding the labs), Gears 3 was ball to the walls action. I don’t think that Gears 4 & 5’s atmosphere weren’t Gears enough. That being said I wouldn’t say no to a more darker tone in Gears 6, I really like the horror genre so it’s fine by me if they decide to go that route.

Yeah but at least 2 and 3 had a story with logic and flow with good writing even if they dropped the tone lol. But yeah I agree with your point.

Yes please, also short combos for weapons, flesh them out.

More gore and meaningful damage, make a system were all kinds of damage delivers a kind of reaction from the enemies, be it fire, ice or just bullets.

Discard the level design with the well placed cover, make cover more organic and levels bigger with meaningful exploration. Maybe one giant interconnected level with different Biomes.

This could be really interesting (and kind of a game changer for the genre to be honest) if they managed to make it work with a game like Gears. We know well that Metroidvania style level design in AAA games is a rarity and it’s definitely not easy to pull off.

It could be a really risky move but now that The Coalition has the luxury of more development time and a powerful system as the SX then this could be the move that will shake the franchise and the shooter genre in general.

wow that video is toxic af

matt booty has said the gears franchise will still be around in 50 years

all those things were in gears 5

also in gears 5, you can shoot hands and feet off lol!

gears 5s open world sections is this

Arkham Asylum, Souls games, Jedi Fallen Order I think are the best examples. JFO was really good, but my favorite is still Arkham Asylum and DS1.

How could I forget Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise, although that was a little bit lite, but still more than ā€˜enough’ to be considered.

Yeah just like fossils are :joy:

No they werent and gears has terrible AI

No its not

I think they can pull off.

City environment with ruined buildings, streets, sewers bunkers. Add verticality to it as well, they can totally pull it off, but I’m sure they’ll never go this way, I’d be surprised.

I wish.

Next game will tell us everything we need to know. By virtue of game pass I know it will put up some numbers at launch but thats not the problem lol.

everyone copied gears because it was successful and concentrate on mechanics the copycats had poor mechanics and no staying power basically the gta of tps, often copied and never matched

i think they all have ladders lol

It was copied, matched and surpassed.

That’s why it feels stale, because it didn’t change anything through all these years while others experimented with it to hell and back.
