Gears Discussion Thread: What should the future of the series be?

@javycane posted that video about how Gears isn’t that great anymore, and he said a ton of things about it, but only one thing that he said, that actually hit the core of the problem to me was about how everyone and their mom copied Gears formula after it.

The first trilogy was a success, and it was revolutionary in gaming, but after it a TON of other games copied it, so the formula became stale because of those other games.

See, why does Halo works till nowadays? Because no game replicates it the same, Gears was replicated by everyone, some were successful and some were a failure, one thing is true though, the formula got stale.

Gears needs to shake things up again and it can do that, people at The Coalition just need incentive.

Ive always thought the perfect pivot for Gears is something akin to what Outriders was except with the customization of Gears Tactics, the RPG Elements of Hivebusters and the Open world segments of 5.

Its RIGHT THERE in the same series.

If you’re not going to change the core concept, then I say lighten the tone and mix it up dramatically.

Take the ideas behind Hivebusters and run it through a The Suicide Squad/Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn filter.

Make the game bright, colorful, over-the-top with humor and quips, and turn it into a big dumb goofy blockbuster briming with a killer soundtrack.

Let’s James Gunn this thing.

I mean, Capcom remade RE2 and 3 shorter and with less choices, they transformed them in modern action adventures, they’re no longer survival horrors, like the new RE8 is more a fps than a horror game, I think they are vastly overrated and sells well because of a larger market overall, expecially for sweetened and easier experiences.

@javycane The God of War example is stupid and it’s the usual trope used by those circles, completely different games and genres, the only similarity is the ‘of war’. The fact he also uses crowbcat as an example, lol (known Xbox hater).

If I was to evolve Gears, I would look at another Mikami masterpiece which is Vanquish. At the moment, the whole cover thing is played out. Id speed up the encounters, thats what was amazing about Vanquish, it was so cool zipping around the arena.

The same guy created Resi Evil 4, which inspired Gears, then shows everyone how to evolve the TPS again with Vanquish.

And he now works for MS, so yea there you go

I should had peeped the full video before sharing lmaoooooooooooo. But yeah ignoring his man child like rants about Kait (which I agree has problems as a character) his other complaints on the series are spot on for me.

Ignoring what you already said, he says what we’ve been saying all this time about it.

Gears needs to commit to one side, go full serious and bleak and horror or go full light hearted RPG shooter.

I will never ever back down from the idea that Gears needs to pivot to an almost full blown survival horror game.

They just need to commit to a vision, whatever it is, right now the game has outdated mechanics with an identity crisis with it’s story.

Gears should just be like the the Mad World trailer. Make cover more organic and destructible in single player. More horror, more bosses like the berserker in the crypt.

I think this is one of the main problems. It just lacks an absolute identiy and vision and is literally going off name.

Sometimes think Im too generous with games because the way he laid out some of the criticisms of the characters and story points I was agreeing with them but I never put much thought into them on my own. Anyway Im glad Im not alone on the overall sentiment of the series aside from his rant on Kait which seems to be more based on her being a girl than just being kinda mediocre-ly written lol.
