Gears Discussion Thread: What should the future of the series be?

Calm down guys, or you will be greenposted. XD

Anyway Gears is really a divisive topic, it might be the right choice to let it rest, until people will want it back.

Not my fault Francis made a throwaway account to direct personal attacks at me.

Yeah beating both campaigns and reaching level 80 online is “little ive played”.

I’m unclear where the idea of Gears 5 being in the 20 million range is coming from. We’ve never heard anything about 20 million sales or about 20 million users. I’d really like to see the working on that one.

Sea of Thieves on Steam has 10-11x more user reviews than Gears 5, which are known to correlate strongly to sales on the platform. Halo MCC is at ~12x. Even acknowledging that Gears probably skews to be more popular on Xbox vs PC when comparing to the ratios that Halo or SOT have, it’s unlikely to be by such a large margin that it would even be 1/3 as popular when adding up both markets. The constant updates on SOT versus radio silence on Gears 5 would definitely indicate that Gears 5 is not in the same tier of success. Grounded has more popularity on Steam than Gears 5 did, and that’s an indie-scale production that is considered successful for what it is, but not a breakout title. Grounded’s all time peak player count is 3x higher than Gears 5’s peak, and daily active player base is 5x higher (as per SteamCharts). Gears Tactics has definitely sold a lot less than 5, albeit also with an undoubtedly smaller budget.

I wouldn’t be confident giving a specific number for Gears 5, but it’s definitely not on the same scale of success as Halo MCC/SOT or other big winners this gen from Microsoft.

I’m not claiming to present an exact science, but we would have to assume Gears 5 was an extreme aberration in that a wierdly low number of Steam users wanted to play the game, while an enormous number of console or Microsoft Store PC users wanted to do so in order for it to be truly a big success. None of the ongoing xbox player count metrics really seem to be supporting the idea of Gears 5 as a big hit either. It might have done pretty well during launch window, but not enough to brag about beyond that.

Needless to say, if you create an alt account to circumvent a ONE DAY silence then you will be permanently banned.

@Doncabesa

For what it’s worth, I had no idea the thread would rapidly devolve into this. Sorry.

I just wanted a place for people to politely argue their points about the current state of Gears since it was always a go-to in the XGS thread and I was getting annoyed it kept popping up in there.

For all its worth Prog I have no problem with debating here but when it gets personal to the points of accusations and people circumventing bans to come at you because they cant stand the opposing viewpoint I believe there is a serious problem in addition to shoddy comments the previous day.

As if I need to put 1000 hours into a game to have a valid opinion on it.

Look I just think it’s sad that Gears 4-5 are basically an entire rehash on the 1-3 story that makes it all meaningless.

I appreciate Gears 5 trying to spice it up with Open-World, but I think the series needs to reinvent itself somehow because core gameplay hasn’t changed since the 360 Pop-N-Shoot days.

Can we “Breath of the Wild” this thing?

That seems to be the new hotness for game series that are spinning it wheels creatively.

Good post

Gears 5 flirts with adding RPG systems (upgrades for the robot), and has small open world sections (the skiff). While doubling down on that makes me roll my eyes as a player, if I imagine myself as one of the cynical “Masters of Business Administration” types strategizing how to maximize franchise potential, those are the kinds of suggestions I’d be making for future Gears campaigns.

Also Gears to me doesn’t have that “go back to” stay power for me.

Whenever a new Gears game is released, it’s always enough time has passed for me to say “Yeah, I could go for some Gears” then I play the campaign, suck at the multiplayer then move on.

I think I only stuck with Gears 5 because I was obssessed with some of the skins.

Make a thread like this for the following:

Xbox doesn’t have enough [insert genre of choice>] games.

Xbox doesn’t have enough [insert perspective of choice] games.

Xbox doesn’t have enough [insert plurality of choice] player games.

Xbox and Nintendo relationship

He just made a third new account, forced to fully delete and IP ban… Hopefully things go in a nicer direction after this.

Damn man, when you think about it, Gears has such a gigantic potential with it’s universe that it’s unreal (pun not intended)

Seriously, add armor customization, armor with specific resistances, add elemental damage, add the ability to choose your squad, pick missions around the globe, small hub mission maps, vehicles, mechs and tanks…

Upgrade weapons with elemental damage and attachments, new functionalities, add combo strings to melee weapons, MORE melee weapons…

So much that could happen man…

Or just go full brutal, claustrophobic, dark and slow horror. Blood, guts, that heavy atmosphere and every shot counting and being devastating to you and to your enemies.

Gears doesn’t even need to be tied to third person sci-fi cover shooter.

Gears could be anything like dark souls like fantasy, sci-fi shooter, survival horror.

The idea of a lone soldier or squad against an unrelenting enemy in a near post-apocolyptic world.

Hell it could even be an Action-RPG like a FFXVI.

Gears DOESN’T HAVE TO BE TRAPPED IN THIS STORY THAT REPEATS ITSELF.

Twice have I installed Gears 5 this week cause I had an itch only to try execution and its an empty lobby and then I tried casual elimination and its full of bots. All my hype deflated again.

Like God of War was considered mostly stale and dead by the time Acension came around which was another prequel to a prequel to a prequel.

Only by shedding it’s identity did it become the mammoth IP it did today with a new style and direction.

Everybody was pretty much done with GoW after III.

God of War IV wasn’t him waiting 30 years to kill more Greek Gods.

The universe is ripe for creativity, they could do anything with it, different or adding a lot more and it’ll work.

Because the universe works. Now, just stop trying to retread the same roads and the franchise is golden.

Once again I ask you to look at God of War 2018.

What that game did for the franchise that was considered dead by that point.

Or if not dead, mostly forgotten after a series of “more of the same” games one after the other.
