Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

And there you go. If what Alex has heard is correct, it is what I and many people on here have been saying in that the GDK was coming in hot and when you combine this with Covid, lack of dev time etc it was not that surprising in hindsight that the Series consoles were falling a little short compared to the PS5.

“Some drops” definitely would normally indicate it happens relatively infrequently.

In reality across a number of hours the game is played, it’s a drop in the ocean lol.

I can see why some would take umbrage with “some drops”.

Which is what I said.

Some implies plural rather than singular.

It’s poorly worded.

But I don’t think it was purposely malicious.

It can drop in that specific tall grass area and while using the sniper on the Series X. I think “some drops” is fair for that scenario.

Semantics I guess.

I would argue some drops equates to more than 1 drop in 1 specific level in 1 specific area doing 1 specific action.

Does sound like something they can improve, but if not, absolutely not a big deal for me personally.

Even if they don’t, I don’t think it’s a big deal at all. However we have people here and being quoted on Twitter where they make a big deal over them pointing out drops on Xbox but “downplaying” the resolution gap. It’s just old seeing people being so quick to claim DF has a bias or something equally stupid. Why even bother keeping this thread open if we continue seeing nonsense like that? It’s no wonder John is ready to leave DF and that’s a shame.

wait what John wants to leave DF? that’s unfortunate. This console war nonsense does seem to get to him a lot on twitter, it’s just sad. Especially at the height during these console launch periods. Hopefully, no one will care starting a year or two down the line, by then both consoles will be pumping out game after game, so there won’t be enough time to spend being toxic online about framerates and resolution.

He is? Jesus, that’s not good. Yeah it’s pathetic that people are claiming they were paid off. People truly don’t use logic and common sense. I hope John doesn’t let it get to him too much and that he just stays there. Be above these clowns, ignore them. Tons of people DO appreciate their work.

It was unfortunate when some launch games underperformed and DF discovered that, but you won’t see me going buckwild at them for just stating facts. Some folks just need to get a life honestly.

The PS5 version is running at 70% of the Series X version’s resolution and lower quality shadows, and the article says it is “no way a problem and still looks wonderful”.

The Series X version drops a few frames during one particular section of a single location, and the article says they hope “IO will look at improving this for owners of the Microsoft machines”.

See, I agree the PS5 version looks wonderful, and I’m one of those who can barely notice any difference since my sight is shit. I just found it funny that PS5 has a significant technical disadvantage ant it still “looks wonderful” and the Series X has some minor drops that would need to be “Improved”.

Just wording. Like someone said in the thread, they were probably covering their asses so fanboys wouldn’t turn their lives into hell.

He never specifically said it, but he’s hinted at something along those lines. Either leaving DF or not doing any more comparison videos. He’s been pretty public about how the reactions he’s received over comparison videos really gets to him. On a recent stream, someone asked about him starting his own retro channel and he didn’t shoot it down entirely. He’s one of my favorite members there and I think it would be a huge loss if he left.

I think you’re looking at it the wrong way. Even with the reduction in resolution and shadow quality, the PS5 version still does look good. However unlike the the small frame rate issues on the Series consoles, we’re unlikely going to see resolution or settings increases on the PS5 since that typically doesn’t happen with console games. We do see frame rate issues, no matter how minor they may be, addressed in future patches though. In this context, it makes sense to hope the very few blemishes on the Xbox consoles are ironed out, since that is more likely than a future patch bumping up the resolution on the PS5. No sense in even mentioning future patches improving resolutions in the PS5 version since we never really see that to begin with.

No matter how they word their videos or articles, we still have people picking them apart and that’s the silly part of it all.

Yep it’s good to see further vindication. Though anyone familiar with architecture changes for compiling, or those familiar with the GDK/Series situation have been telling the internet armchair developers this for months. Those same people are going to be eating a lot of crow over the next few years; I’ve been saying for months that the architectural differences alone are going to be significant for performance efficiencies, but you couple that with the inherent performance delta of the hardware and some of the additional efficiency multipliers and software advantages and that gap widens. I feel like a lot of folks have been ignoring the software magic that Xbox teams have worked over the last eight years…

I don’t know man, it is a frame drop in hours of gameplay it is rare and very, very occasional, it is a nitpick that the vast majority wont even notice, like a second stutter in hours of gameplay, it is very probably to be a bug as well. Resolution and shadows quality tho, they are a constant variable across the entire gameplay, it about pushing 40% more pixels on SX. Looks good on the PS5, probably yes, but native at same assets quality is gonna always be better. When he said some drops, it implies more than a drop in hours of gameplay. It may not have bad intentions on the wording, but for me it is almost clear that this aims to diminish the differences here, maybe even to prevent fanboy wars, who knows. It is ok tho, lets move on it is not big deal afterall, however we need to call the things as they are. I wont lose my temper and go attacking ppl on internet because of that. Anyways, the way MS touted the power of the SX, this kind of nitpicking will be common. In the end of the day I’m satisfied with Hitman results and couldn’t care less with what internet says.

Everything said and done, I’m glad they put out an amazing looking game on all platforms. the SS continues to be a 1080p machine as many of us truly believe it is and even the last gen games look great. I’m curious to see how the levels that dropped frames through BC on the Series X run in the native mode through Hitman 3. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t recognize I own Hitman 1 and 2 and won’t let me play older levels. =/

It’s a 30% difference and I’m not saying either is bad in either way. I much rather have a consistent 4K and better shadows with some frame rate drops than a drop in resolution and shadow quality with no drops. Like ProgStopper said though, it comes down to semantics and not something that should be a focal point at all IMO. I agree we need to call things as they are and it’s in that respect that people here and elsewhere are being disingenuous IMO.

This represents a bigger gap than the usual we saw on Ps4 vs Xbone. Same resolution gap, but with a settings difference on top of that.

Kinda expected, though the launch state made me think it would take a while longer to get at that point. Though I’m sure it will also improve even more in the next few months.

That’s kinda his point, the SX version is almost flawless and the one spot it’s not seems it’s easier to fix than to increase ps5 settings to match it.

I kinda agree with him. They are pretty clear on how SX is pretty much locked. If people pick up out of context that’s on them.

Over the span of that entire game?

I’d argue otherwise myself.

If we see those drops every time a sniper rifle is used? Nah, I think it’s fair. If I want to use a sniper rifle on every map, I’d experience that same minor drop on every level. It’s not like the word “some” is even in the same realm as “often”, “random”, “consistent”, etc. There are some drops in the game. That is the easiest way to describe it and probably the exact word I’d use in a tweet to describe it. It’s a whole lot of commotion over a whole lot of nothing because people want to let a single word get to them.

Yeah, I was referring mainly to Shinobi post tho. As you said it is virtually locked on SX as well and DF made clear it was a isolated issue in specific spot and was not a differentiator on performance.

This is a huge gap in terms of performance. Its like PS5 is from last gen and Series X is from next gen

The Series X is a beast  devs having more time and better optimization on dev kits showing off
