This is worded in a very strange way.

There is no series x version so why are you putting up Against the Series X? Wouldn’t it make more sense to tweet how Stadia stacks up against the backwards comp versions on Series X and PS5.

The results are interesting but overall I definitely would give the nod to Xbox Series X after having seen that video. And for Stadia it was all on small screens too, I wonder how it’ll look on big screen TVs.

Destiny 2 delivers true 4K resolution on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with pixel counts resolving at a native 3840x2160 on each in a vast majority of test shots.

The games are effectively identical - with PS5 showing only a slightly higher frequency of resolution drops under 4K. In fact, evidence does seem to point towards the Microsoft machine not using DRS much, if at all.

60fps performance is generally excellent on Series X too, but it does have some minor frame-rate drops from the target 60fps, while PlayStation 5 is slightly more consistent in this area. In short: a touch more clarity on Xbox, but a very occasionally smoother ride on the Sony machine.

Series S has a performance profile that is similar to its bigger brother, and while we did note DRS in effect here (with the max target of 1920x1080), it barely manifests at all.

Crucible: On a technical level, both PS5 and Xbox Series X drop target rendering resolution to 1440p at 120Hz - which is, coincidentally, the limit for 120Hz gaming on select HDMI 2.0 televisions. In order to keep frame-rates high, horizontal dynamic resolution scaling is in effect - I noted a minimum of 1520x1440. In play, Series X again has more dips underneath 120fps, though each can drop to the 80-90fps region in the Iron Banner mode, specifically when lots of Super Charge moves stack up.

It seems to be the same case as other games: Series X maintains a higher resolution more often, and therefore is more suscetible to frame drops. Although it runs at a near locked 60 FPS and some times drops to between 57 and 59, so nothing drastic.

I dare say that I wouldn’t notice even without VRR. We are talking a about a 2-3 FPS drop that isn’t even constant

I played it for a couple hours, if there was any frame drop it really not that noticeable on normal mode. Anyways looks like some form of parity on campaign with PS5 performing a little better on 120 mode? All in all, I think Cerny did a great job with Ps5 architecture, looks like his vision about CUs is paying off, at least for now. It is the very beginning of the gen, but what I was expecting to be a OneX vs Pro scenario turns out to be a bit embarrassing to MS.

This is clearly just case where Xbox is running slightly higher average resolution with a less aggressive DRS but drops the odd extra frame. Given this seems to be heavily built on the Pro and One X versions then it makes sense…since that’s more or less what we saw on those consoles.

I wonder how much longer seriesX and PS5 parity is going to last. If we are getting similar results in a a year, I hope a dev explains why.

I guess for now we can still blame it on the tools being very late and MS waiting for RDNA2. But let’s hope sometime this year we see XSX just taking the lead. But that’s for actual next gen games, so the full GDK. In due we should be seeing this. I’m sure that is what the plan was.

No, Far Cry 6 will also be on Xbox One/PS4. For next-gen games, maybe the next-gen version of Control could be good game to compare? It has a ray-tracing and performance mode, after all. I don’t know of any multiplatform next-gen only games with actual dates, unless I’m forgetting something, but there’s Resident Evil Village this year. As for cross-gen titles, I think Hitman 3, Gotham Knights, Far Cry 6, and next-gen Cyberpunk will be interesting comparisons.

Control is still a current gen gen game, its next gen version will be no different to other next gen patches like cold war, watch dogs etc.

But how can the Series X take the lead when both consoles are targeting and accomplishing 4K 60FPS? You can’t go beyond that.

I expect to see more difference when the games are designed specifically for the next-gen (and not next-gen ports, like we are seeing now) and become more demanding. The devs are currently using the One X and PS4 Pro versions of the games and bumping them up to 4K 60 FPS.

Thats literally what Destiny 2 is on xbox. Took the 4K version on the One X and made it 60fps lol.

Destiny 2 is not an example of parity. As per VG Tech analysis Xbox runs more consistently at 4K than PS5

Average FPS - PS5 59.97 SX - 59.93 Lowest FPS - PS5- 56 SX- 58

So let’s be very clear. The frame rates are identical. The resolution is better on Xbox.

Ī™t’s too early to make conclusions about the architecture of either system, right now the PS5 is doing good for sure but Series X even with the gimped tools is showing some advantages so it’s not that easy to predict if this will continue. Next gen games (designed around the new CPU’s aka pushing them) with next gen engines and RT will be a whole different beast/discussion so let’s just wait a bit before giving congrats to Cerny for his less compute units/higher GPU clocks design. :wink:

That’s true, and Destiny 2 on Series X also has some advantages on the PS5 version, while the PS5 version has other advantages, so they are equal there. So, it is not like the Series X is a mess right non, even with unoptimized tools.
