Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

I really don’t think there is any issue with what was said. There isn’t any real reason why Xbox would have a 30FPS mode and PS5 not beyond more effort went into the Xbox version. I mean given the last gen consoles are 30FPS it’s pretty weird.

Beyond that it’s a interesting discussion on the quality of the analyses. I guess they are very stretched. The channel you mention sadly is not a good comparison since they don’t really seem to know what they are doing and just pump out numbers and stuff that are usually wildly inaccurate. VG tech do good stuff NX gamer also. The interesting thing about this is all three of DF, NX gamer and VG tech have different resolutions in their analysis of cyberpunk 2077. Which perhaps says pixel counting should end because TAA and reconstructions make the resolution estimates inaccurate and fairly useless in assessing the image quality. DF had the Xbox version as lower resolution in performance mode yet NX gamer had it higher and VG tech had the PS5 going down as low as 900p. I’ve watched on my 4K TV some footage from SX and PS5 lined up and it looks definitively better on SX. Whether that’s down to LODs and SSOD or resolution or whatever - what it shows to me is that relying on resolution as a metric needs to go because it simply isn’t relevant anymore. And unless you can get real-time resolution alongside FPS it’s very misleading.

There is nothing to speculate. This version of Cyberpunk is based on PS4Pro/One X. One X is the better console and thats where the difference is coming from.

Sony had marketing deals for Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty etc… Didn’t stop any of those games from being better on the One X. The precedent is there and clearly established that games will look and be better on the One X.

And yet here is DF, analyzing a Pro/One X game in BC mode and pushing the narrative that it’s because of the marketing deal. It’s total bullshit. Plain and simple.

Nah. That doesn’t explain why there is a quality and performance mode on Xbox but only one mode on PS5z

The reason is very well known. SX has extra apis that bc games can use to detect if they are running on SX or SS, ps5 lacks something similar.

And DF was the first one to break the existence of such apis Ms told them in March when SS was shown to them.

As I’ve said above that might explain it IF Xbox had an additional performance mode. But since the performance mode on PS5 is a mix of Pro and base PS4 to hit 60 it doesn’t explain why there isn’t a quality mode on PS5 that draws the Pro version with a higher res as per the Xbox quality mode…

I think the situation is pretty clear when you add the status of the ps5 version and add the fact that there is no extra modes on it (which is not possible since the game can’t know its running on a PS5): Ps5 is running at ps4 settings but capped at the pro max and 60 fps.

Which likely means that the base ps4 version still has the hard coded 1220p resolution cap (and perhaps even unlocked framerate) but just never hit anything close to it.

Likely they did this because on Pro it would go above 30fps if they unlocked it and make it even worse. And on ps4 instead of going above 30 it just increases the resolution if there’s headroom for it. So on ps5 it maxes out both the resolution and framerate, but at only the base settings.

On SX/SS that’s not an issue because the game knows where it’s running on.

Isn’t the difference that PS5 can only read the PS4 Pro version for now while on Xbox Series X games detect the console and add next gen features, just like games like Warzone and Rocket League have done? To me it feels like something that was only possible to add quickly on Xbox Series X, or else they’d need to add a higher visuals/30fps mode on the PS4 Pro version so that it could also run on PS5 and I don’t think it’s work well on PS4 Pro at this settings in the first place.

Doubt the marketing deal is at play here.

Exactly. Only in this case it seems they based on the base ps4 version for ps5 in order to increase resolution and framerate instead of the pro (likely because they didn’t managed to hit 60fps with the increased pro settings in BC mode, given SX is running it at 1080p)

But it’s very clear ps5 setup is limited to the fact the game does not know it’s running on it so they had to fit one of the modes in it, versus on SX where they could make custom modes.

First time I’m watching DF about Cyberpunk and man, performance mode sure looks blurry. Now I wonder if this footage is pre patch but if not, seems I will be opting for quality mode.

If you read his follow up tweet, he places Series S as 2.5 place.

Tbh the big winner aside from xbox is stadia.

Nah, streaming games will never be the same quality as playing it locally on powerful hardware.

5-10 years ago maybe but this statement is tone deaf nowadays. Stadia tech is very good and if you have a good stable connection it feels like native.

It still won’t be as good as locally played on powerful hardware, unless you know, you beat physics and the speed of light.

Its great as a complementary service but I wouldn’t ever use it as my primary method of gaming.

Streaming can definitely be better than the local experience if you are near a data center and the hardware there is better than your console. Imagine having powerful DLSS like configurations on the server end enabling high framerates and good image quality.

That’s not totally accurate. At least eventually.

You can have orders of magnitude more processing power in the cloud to deliver for example a visual fidelity far above what’s possible locally.

Then there’s machine learning. “tricks” to hide latency already has some very good results. Imagine with models running both locally and in the cloud, both for guessing the next input and for adjusting the results if the prediction fails. And there’s a lot of potential for hybrid rendering as well.

And that’s not counting edge nodes which can make a very large area have effectively such a low latency that the above is not even needed to reach a playable level.

Richard clarifies his mistake. Case closed!

He did but still sounds bad. I don’t understand how they can post a video with that type of comment in it to begin with as if they don’t look over the video and edit it accordingly. Sometimes, I believe that DF doesn’t shit like those comments on purpose because it would get more attention and in turn, more views/money on their channel and in turn, their Patreon.

I agree with this sentiment “Case Closed” but why should he have brought it up in the first. So does that mean MS show them the console first hence they bribed them for good press. Sounds about right. Isn’t it?

And I always wonder why such mistakes keeps on happening for XBOX and not PS. Does it mean there is an inheritent bias towars PS or Sony pays journos like Apple does or it only happens as it is cool to hate on XBOX and these people cynically crave for a single console manufacturer existence in the gaming industry.

They time DF have been in the industry for far too long. And these are pre-recorded videos and are edited later, so such things should have gone pass their editorial team.

I hope they don’t go down this route again, it only going to make them look bad and lose credibility.

As far as John Linneman is concerned he has a past of saying something very objectionable, so I hope he keeps a low profile on social media, as I believe he is too sensitive for things that goes on social media.

I still love the stuff they produce. Alex is my favorite, Richard second and John third. And I hope they keep out of stuff like this unless its directly related to the game they are covering or this questioning of their credibility will continue.

I get what Lucas Taves is saying but being close to a data center doesn’t mean it will be better than a local experience. Latency and input matters as well which performs better locally.
