Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

Looks like the power connector for the new RTX 4090 are melting, literally! Theres a few YT Videos about this along with posts on Reddit and elsewhere. So if you’re fortunate to have such a beast, keep an eye out.

Seems odd to go with a new power connection to push for 600 Watts when none of the cards draw near that. Most are capped around 450 Watts.

What a nice potato.

The potato has more stable frame rates then all might PS5 :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Series X is a near perfect in 30 fps mode and 40 fps mode makes most sense on Xbox hardware only

But yes, PS5 has ‘excellent’ implementation of adaptive triggers

But is it “a love letter” to adaptive triggers?

Played and finished the game on Series S and it was a nicely clean image quality, surprised that it’s 900p because I imagined it was 1080p with other IQ techniques implemented. Shows that there’s more to it than raw pixel numbers.

it’s upscaled to 1080p TAA like the XSX to 4K with TAA

After MSFS we shouldn’t be surprised. Asobo knows their graphics! Truly would be a great addition to XGS, the graphics and the genre they have been making with the two Plague Tale games.

I think we will get 60fps patch sooner or later.

The moments where series X drops frames are either heavy graphics areas or when there are sudden rats appearance

I am 50-50 on the patch right now

I could see someone attempt a “performance patch” where they replace the 300,000 rats with 10,000 significantly bigger rats…

That would be really nice. But hopefully a patch that adds a mode and doesn’t replace/overwrite anything. If the visual sacrifice is too big I will stick to 40fps.

A number of scenes where performances dips on the PS5 seems like it might be memory bandwidth related where transparency effects are heavily used. The Series S seems to suffer from this in spots as well but to a lesser degree due to the lower resolution. The scene with the fire is a good example of an area that would be demanding on bandwidth. If that’s one of the issues, they can lower the rendering resolution to help or lower the resolution of the transparency but that may produce too many obvious artifacts.

Curious on how often we’re going to see 30fps caps with more and more current gen games releasing in the future. I can see a possibility where options for 30/40fps are given more often than a 30/60fps split.

300000 rats, that explains the no 60fps, that’s a massive increase from the 5000 of the first game.

consoles can’t hit 60 even without rats on the screen

But I wonder, is that due to the consoles, or did Asobo not optimise enough or is it the engine? Or all three?

Another impressive example where the Potatoseries S cleary holds back the PS5. Clearly.

On a more serious note Plague Tale is another game elevated by having console settings for chromatic aberration :+1:

My guess is all three. I’m sure they could hit 60 if they made further cutbacks to lighting/texture/shadow quality or resolution, but the game is pretty cpu heavy I’m not sure that would save it fully. The next gen version of Innocence had a few drops here and there at 60 and this uses much better lighting and asset quality (not to mention the rats).

In spots it almost sounds like he’s apologizing for the Series X having much better performance than PS5.
