Yes, because I originally thought that 60fps is great and amazing and people were actively pushing it at launch (can’t play less than 60fps games and so on). There were even attempts for 120fps. Now, 40fps is actually quite good and 60fps is not necessary anymore
but wasn’t that what was used in doom eternal to try and maintain a 120hz frame rate while not losing out too much on picture quality? edit:well tier 1 was used anyways.
It is not about necessity. And it is not taking away 60fps mode.
It is an extra option so there is no problem in
All true, but with VRR you’re better off just unlocking the framerate rather than capping it to 40. I think this option is best for 120 Hz TVs without VRR support.
Yeah … But frame target was completely different. At 40fps you would get mostly the same picture quality of the 30fps mode.
But VRS2 has had some major improvements from VRS1 when it was used in Doom Eternal, like Cyberpunk 2077 from the video digital foundry did, showing that the usual drop in resolution of certain areas don’t show much difference from native resolution.
So wouldn’t VRS2 being used in every mode eliminate the need for a 40 mode if you can get a more stable 60 and 30 mode without losing out in picture quality?
If you use 40 on a tv without vrr you will get uneven frame pacing and it will feel even worse than 30, trust me,
No, but from my observation as soon as Insomniac (was it them) put out 40fps option for R&C (I think it was R&C), suddenly media and Twitter folks turned 40fps into that “perfect framerate”.
Are you sure about that? Ratchet had a 40fps mode after launch and back then VRR was not a thing on PS5.
I though that you only had to choose the 120Hz option (and obviously have a 120Hz panel) on the PS5’s system settings for this to work.
My bro has a PS5 and OLED C9 and he said the 40hz mode in Ratchet is amazing. Sounds like we would definitely benefit from it, even if we have VRR, right?
It is not the perfect frame rate. But a great middle ground which offers both the great visuals of the 30 fps mode and smoothness of the 60fps mode (or atleast better Smoothness then 30 fps)
It’s complicated. VRR wasn’t added until recently but games could still target 40 and take advantage of it in a way, plus with reduced input lag, which was more important here.
Take a read here:
I think developers should work on making the 60fps mode (if it is possible of course) the best that they can instead of pursuing one extra mode that in the end can be replaced by unlocking the frame-rate in the quality mode and let VRR take care of the rest. Sony’s 1st party studios like Insomniac tried the 40fps mode because it was the best next thing after VRR which PS5 didn’t have back then I suppose, the Series consoles and Xbox 1st party studios have the talent, the hardware and the software with things like VRS 2.0 to not have a need for modes like this in their games IMO.
I may be wrong about this one but I don’t see Xbox 1st party studios pursuing the 40fps modes. If anything we should have seen something like this in at least one of their games by now.
Providing unlocked frame rate mode is the even better. Issue is, it won’t be good on PS5. Because PS5 lower bound VRR cap is 48 fps. So for PS5, 40 fps option is a must
Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t the article saying what I wrote above? choosing the 120Hz and you are good to go in the 40fps mode. No VRR is needed and you just choose the 120Hz option on the console while on a 120Hz panel, isn’t this right?
Yeah for the PS5 it makes way more sense to pursue the 40fps modes for sure.
A 40fps mode would still be an attractive option since it provides improved latency while providing IQ closer to what we’d see in a 30fps mode.
As the generation goes on and we see more studios drop 60fps to earn back some headroom, I hope 40fps becomes the new standard instead of 30fps.
When a cool new option is introduced into gaming, it’s pretty typical for people to want to see more of it. There will be plenty of games this gen that won’t hit 60fps. For those games 40fps would be a lot better than 30fps if that’s an option.
Yes, but it’s not technically the same as what VRR and unlocked is now.
But wouldn’t just unlocking the fps in a 30fps game while using VRR be a better anyway?
If the unlocked frame rate was always above 40fps, possibly. There are more 120Hz TVs than 120Hz VRR displays in the wild though. So I was thinking of what would likely work best for the largest potential audience.
Only if you’re looking at lower than 4K displays. Right now I don’t remember all the details when I dug into this earlier, but from what I recall at 4K and 120 Hz you’re looking at sets where nearly all have VRR.
