Arent those both related?

if im not mistaken directml will take up CU’s on the series consoles and can do stuff like AI for smarter NPCs and better animations whereas super res runs with little overhead and can even work on nvidia gpus. Maybe they might both be used together.

Not really. AMD is working on their own Fidelity FX suite of features and aren’t necessarily tied to ML while Microsoft is investing in ML on their own through Direct ML.

Have any idea what the Xbox one x runs the game at?

It’s 1080p 60 FPS on Xbox One X

Hmmm, seems to be parity with the PS4 pro on this front, I was sure the series s would be able to do 1080p 60 as well. Seems odd. I guess the next gen patch might fix everything

Yeah I think the Series S is 1440p 30 FPS, which is unfortunate, but it’s probably only because of BC.

It’s actually Dynamic 4K at 60 FPS, isn’t it?

Xbox Series X runs 4K @ 60FPS with Dynamic Resolution

Disclaimer: It will not be a native current gen experience. More information on that will follow soon, though.

I know, I was talking about the One X version actually.

Oh yeah, you’re right, sorry! It’s hard to keep track of those backwards compatibility stuff. The game runs the One X version on the Series X, but it somehow runs better.

It’s funny, because if you have a Series X I don’t see what more a native version will bring to the table other than possibly faster load times and maybe additional settings increased.

The Series S is most in need of a native version I feel to bring 60fps because there shouldn’t be much reason why the Series S cannot do at least 1080p/60fps.

What are these problems with PS5 now? First it’s was Returnal and now this issue.

Those two wouldn’t be related. Returnal is a native game, Biomutants runs on BC. Depending on what the PS4 Pro version runs at, that usually dictates what the PS5 version renders at as well. The most we typically see with PS5 BC is an update to the PS4 version to run at 60fps when played on a PS5.

I always think it’s a shame when a machine isn’t able to live up to its potential, and it’s a bummer to see that the PS5’s BC is hamstringing it :frowning:

It’s perfectly adequate BC mind you, and better than I expected. I just feel bad for the people who really care about numbers who are seeing that their shiny expensive new box isn’t working quite as well as it could. I feel worse for the devs who have to put up with shitty snide remarks though.

Edit: we’re talking PS4/XBO versions running in BC for both platforms right? How would a native XSX version be improved realistically? Native 4k rather than dynamic? 120 FPS instead of 60? Better loading times? Smaller filesize?

It is important we keep things in context here. As you say, the PS5’s BC is actually very good since it basically runs all the PS4’s library flawlessly. It is just that Microsoft went a step beyond with the Xbox’s BC.

Absolutely! I want to be very clear that I’m not castigating Sony’s BC efforts here. It’s good to great and I would be thrilled if it were used as a baseline standard for BC from here on out. It’s just that the only real modern comparison that can be made is to Xbox, which is that much better.

What I said is that it’s a shame the PS5 isn’t able to really flex its considerable muscles in BC mode. From my limited knowledge, the Xbox Series X isn’t able to fully utilize its power for that either but it does do it better if you’re inclined to compare them. I really hope that this is something that Sony can address in time. I know that native games are a different ballgame and we’ll be hearing less about crossgen over time, but it’s not like those games will just disappear. They’ll still be around and probably constitute the majority of libraries for a good long while.

Still, it’s awesome that BC is as much of a thing as it is. I remember being frustrated that I couldn’t play my SNES games on my N64 (or my Game Boy games on my Turbografx 16). Things are better than they’ve ever been and that alone is cause for celebration

I am no expert but they themselves call it a technical issue. And Returnal developer also called it a playstation 5 issue.

Related or not - issues are there

I think that actual scenario is that Xbox is exceptionally well in BC at this point that it looks like PS5 is hamstring on BC.

Backwards compatibility is not a new thing in console space to be honest. At launch at least.

Just so I understand what you mean better, what Returnal issue are you referring to? Can you provide a link?

Yes games will have technical issues. That doesn’t mean there is a core issue with the platform itself.
