1X consistently offered double or near double the resolution of Pro. Sometimes at smoother framerates and higher settings.
I dunno about japanese games because they are usually not that technically advanced to begin with and the few exceptions were either exclusive to Playstation or had a marketing deal (RE Maskes 2 and 3, MHW).
But just look at the big titles, the power gap was immense:
Destiny 2 renders at twice the resolution on 1X with a smoother fps
CoD games renders at a massive resolution delta too (and at launch 1x had fps issues but later they would sort out)
AC games were at around 1440p on Pro and dynamic 1800-4k on 1X
Shadow of Tomb raider with more than twice the resolution gap (1x at native 4k and Pro at 1800 CB)
And for AA and indie games the difference was even bigger. We had many games (including from publishers like Sega) were the game was 1080p on Pro and 4K on 1x
Well, I remember Borderlands 3 (same rez and even lower settings on X1X, which translated even on XSX), but that may be thanks to Randy Pitchford incompetence. XD
Speaking of SEGA, all the Yakuzas are strictly on par, except for 0 and Kiwami 1 (1440p vs 1080p). Bandai Namco games also, except some outlier here and there, all Activision games outside COD (which have always bad frames at launch, it’s so difficult to optimize only for Xbox?), etc…
Obviously a very big batch of games were much better, but X1X never reached the totality like PS4, even if the gap vs PS4Pro was bigger than XB1 vs PS4. Why? This is the real question imo: MS ineptitude? Sony grip on market? Devs unwillingnes? Imo it’s important because I see this gen as a continuation of this trend: Xbox is the better machine, but often this delta is underused or even not used at all.
I hope MS will merge console and pc devs tools as soon as they can, so there will be no excuse left.
Well, let’s just agree to disagree then. For my perception 1X increase over Pro was much bigger than Ps4 had over xbone (not only in resolution/performance but also in higher settings) with a few cases that were the exception.
In yours it was the opposite, the majority of the scenarios they being the same with a few exceptions where it pulled off.
It’s pointless to continue without hard data to show which perception is closer to reality and gathering this data will take a lot of time.
Yeah they need to focus more on XSS too. Keep in mind tho that the target demo for XSS are gamers who aren’t focused on graphics tech. They won’t notice nor care about 900p vs 1080p. Still, devs should target 1080p there and work around that imho.
Yes The console is more than capable of hitting 1080p baseline. So seeing these 900p numbers is just odd even if the primary attraction for the S isnt resolution.
If a game needs to be upscaled to 1080p I’m fine with it provided the XSX version is scaled to hit 4k too. Don’t want XSS version losing out on details other than pixel density personally.
Sure there is. Resources are finite for indies and big publishers alike. Sure you can say that big publishers have more resources, but their games are usually larger in scope as a result as well. There are also scenarios where say the PS5 version can comfortably hit 4K, so in that sense you’d have parity with resolution alone and it’s not due to any lack of effort or need to make excuses. At that point I’d hope for at least higher settings on the Series X but even that is not guaranteed for multiple reasons and none of them have to do with excuses.
Honestly once the amd version of dlss releases there is no problem with such res. In fact I even argue people who pic the series s dont care about those factors. We can be upset as much as we want but are WE really the target audience?
You’re right most people dont care about resolution , casuals care more about severe fps drops. SeriesS is a great machine imo, i personally went with a seriesX, but if I was in a situation where SeriesS was my only choice I would still be very happy with it, especially as the gen went on and i would play X1 games less (Im really enjoying fps boosts)
It’s a smaller team with less resources for one. Also don’t forget that the Series S is the new gen console with the smallest install base during a time where QA is the most difficult due to COVID. We also don’t know what bottlenecks they may have ran into. So there are good reasons why these versions turned out the way they are.
What’s accomplished in Game A doesn’t apply to Game B, C, D, etc. So no need to be as combative about what all developers work very hard over.
