I just find it interesting in specifically identifying what the new gen will bring to games.
Sure there might be more impressive areas in the game, but from a technical perspective the footage we have gives us a good idea the technology and visual metrics the game has.
It does not really matter to me what the game reviews, why do u even care lol.
Bare in mind MM and sackboy were cross gen
A new generation should raise the quality threshold, otherwise whats the point in a new gen!
Yeah it will be interesting to see how it reviews and it would be weird if reviewers did not take into account that its a new gen exclusive.
However if that does happen I aint going to lose sleep over it.
But why are u even pointing this out?
Do you actually have a point? Or are you just doing so for the sake of it?
Also you dont address my other points, so it seems you dont really want to have a good faith discussion.
You started by starting this could have been a PS4 game, which frankly could be said about almost any game, as we’ve seen even a game like Witcher 3 get ported (looking ugly) to the gosh darn Switch, which is a paltry little machine. Since the beginning of consoles new consoles have brought with them new games. There was never a promise made that the new games could NEVER be done on the older hardware. We all know this, and yet you’ve attempted to say there is something wrong with the fact that Returnal is PS5 only. You’ve twice stated in this thread that Sony have been “dishonest” about how they’ve talked about next gen, etc. You said this should be a game pass game, or PS+ game. You’ve then brought up The Medium as a “value” comparison, as if a forgettable game that’s cheaper is somehow a good thing? Then you brought up Gears 5, repeatedly to say how much more impressive it is visually. Then you stated definitively that Returnal did not have ray tracing, but it does.
Returnal, like Godfall or Destruction All-Stars, doesn’t look like a 70$ game. That’s just what it is. It looks fine, but seems light on content from the videos. Environements looks bland and uninspired. You only see 2-3 enemies in small rooms and it’s a roguelike.
I mean, for the same price or even less at launch you had Horizon Zero Dawn or God of War last gen… I don’t know what they are doing with that price hike. It’s a 40 bucks game at best.
I think this looks very bland. I certainly wouldn’t pay €80 for it… Still 0 games on my “time to get a PS5-list” which need to reach about 10 or so before a purchase.
Edit: @Jeans seems like we had the same impression, haha.
Very excited for this game, glad that the new gameplay makes the performance look silky smooth.
I have no doubt I’m going to like it, because it’s a game game, where you avoid stuff and shoot stuff and get upgrades and try not to die. Will always love that over a hallway walker with amazing looking cutscenes.
The interesting aspect to me is how the gaming drought (or at least exclusive drought) is making a lot of people who definitely would not be enthused about a challenging, bullet hell roguelite either come out of their comfort zone to try it, or simply pretend to be interested in this kind of game.
My big concern is how action combat can work when you’re dashing around and shooting stuff from a distance 24/7. I’m sure the game will be tough in some ways, but I’m worried it’ll feel like dark souls if you had a machine gun. It works in Doom Eternal because you don’t just point your generic assault rifle at all enemies and wait for them to die; each weapon is a really unique tool there. This combined with the fact that it’s trying to be a mainstream release makes me think it’ll be easier than some hope for.
On top of that, I’m thinking the length of the game might be shorter than what people expect from a $70 game. Trophies make it look like there are 5 bosses and 6 biomes which is a rough comparison to something like It Takes Two which had 30/40+ unique areas and gameplay mechanics. Hoping there’s some good end game setup to keep me playing after the 5-15 hours of the first playthrough.
I was reading something earlier about how the weapons improve by being used. Really piqued my curiosity. Ill try find it, but I may go dark now til reviews are out
I understand the overpriced argument for other regions where it’s like $100+ for a single game because that’s nuts but for where the game is only $10 more, if someone really wants to play the game, I will never understand the point of waiting. Perhaps if you’re a collector but if not, once you complete it and trade it in/sell it, it would no longer cost $70 and most likely be what the price people will wait for in regards to a sale or price drop anyway.
Personally, im not buying Returnal only because of this roguelike garbage that I have no interest in whatsoever but if it was a straight forward 12-15 hour game, this would have been my second 2021 released game purchase. Instead, it will be RE 8.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is also $70 but for me, that’s an easy day one purchase. No worries or concerns at all.
In general, as a gamer in which gaming is my number one form of entertainment, I don’t care what the price is. Games could be $100 U.S. day one and if I want to play that game, im still buying it day one because I want to play it and will not wait to do so.
Back to Returnal, my expectation is a mid-80’s OC/MC score and around 1.5m-2m in sales.
You are mistaken. In those gears 5 posts u quoted i do not say anywhere that gears 5 is more visually impressive, I actually say the opposite lol.
Yes the medium being cheaper is a good thing…
And yes returnal does look like a decent version could be done for the PS4,
Phil has said multiple times that this new gen will be about framerate and feel, and that games already look great, sony on the other hand have not said this and have been beating the drum about “they believe in generations and the improvements they bring”. So far it seems Phil has been more honest in setting up expectations compared to sony.
Yeah i edited my post after making a mistake about Raytracing, if you actually read the thread you will see that I made that claim based on a tech analysis…
Why are you telling me things I already posted?
What is your point?
What “pattern” are you seeing, we are all dying to know.
Well, I’m glad you’ve gave up on the “nearly the whole post is inaccurate” schtick.
You were bringing up Gears (for god knows what reason) to suggest it was “better”, and you even made a point of saying it had “more effects and enemies on screen”, so yes, you were also talking about visuals in your random comparison.
The Medium is once again a very random game to talk about in the context of Returnal, but it fits the pattern because it’s an Xbox game.
As I already pointed out, most games can be done on older hardware if you really want to. We could have this discussion about almost any game that comes out on the PS5 and Series X. If developers want to find a way to bring a game to weaker hardware they can almost always nip and tuck somewhere to make it happen.
If PS5 owners are upset by how “dishonest” Sony is being about what next gen means I’m sure we’ll hear plenty of complaints about it, but so far that doesn’t really seem to be a thing, but I’m sure people appreciate you looking out for them.
I brought up the ray tracing thing because it fits the pattern of all of this stuff I’ve mentioned.
The pattern is you aggressively shilling for Microsoft, to the point where you’re randomly bringing up games that have absolutely nothing to do with Returnal (Gears 5), bringing up Phil quotes about expectations, declaring Returnal has no ray tracing when it does, and even when corrected you talked about it maybe being just a “marketing checkbox”, again, to further try and downplay the game’s technical aspects. That is the pattern. It’s right there for all to see.
Listen, there is nothing wrong with liking Xbox. This is a Xbox forum after all, but there is no need to talk about Playstation games just to tear them down by trying to say Xbox games look better, are better value, Sony are dishonest, Phil is honest, etc.
Oh right so your point is im a shill… Ok we are done here. Name calling is utterly pointless schoolyard shit.
I also praise returnal, if criticism of a game upsets you I suggest you look for some echochamber where you are shielded from upsetting opinions. Afterall im not the only the only one who has these views on returnal, you just seem defensive. Just because you disagree with somone does not make them a shill.
And gears 5 is not just a random pick, its made with UE4 , its last gen and I cant think of a game that has a more similar art style to returnal. And the point of the comparison is to show what returnal is doing that is superior to last gen, I cant think of a better last gen UE4 benchmark, also I said that gears 5 has more impressive effects and polycount compared to the gears5 footage I posted, not returnal, I say this in brackets.
