This game is gonna be a banger. Practically all the gaming journos are raving about it on Twitter. High 80’s meta probs
Yeah I’m gonna go with 85 based off of some reviewers ranking it lower because of a lack of accessibility but those that love a challenge will score it high.
This rings all the Recore bells for me as well. Saw some parts that there is also some platforming. Hopefully it’s also as well made as Recore was.
I do hope the game is a success and Sony can continue to work on games like this.
And of course that they decide to acquire Housemarque, it was a shame hearing them last gen when they were struggling to get their projects funded
It’s legit awesome imo. One of my favorite games of the last gen if you can look past the rough edges.
If are in for some challenges the optional Dungeons have insane platforming and combat and put a joy in your face when you get to complete them.

Jeff grubb with his impressions.
looks good…this would be so perfect on gamepass! ugh sony… @AntonioConte
The problem with the game is that it would be a huge hit on Steam and on Game Pass, the $70 (by the way, this game in Europe costs 80€ which is 97 USD!) is going to be very damaging.
This games reception is going to be so weird as it’s a rogue like with very little progression from run to run, aka something most people don’t like compared to games like Hades where you feel like you make progress even if you die.
Returnal appears to have that rogue like feeling of “I spent three hours on this run and have nothing to show for it”.
Like my last post, I’m loving it and am super excited, it’s just going to be weird/funny when a lot of games critics who would never play a rogue like normally suddenly hail this game as brilliant.
Also noticed people saying the game is very hard, but the trash encounters seem to be “stay far away from enemies and shoot” and boss encounters are “look at boss, hold R2, and dodge the bullet hell”. That’s something that is hard for journalists but others blow through in very little time.
This is my least favorite thing and reason enough for me to never touch this game. People love Dark Souls though so
Amen, I can’t stand it when a game just invalidates the time you put into it.
I find it very odd that Sony is having a Ratchet and Clank State of Play this Thursday on the day that Returnal reviews drop and the day before Returnal releases. Showing off your first party $70 game that no doubt has much wider appeal right on top of the news cycle for Returnal which is also $70 and more niche seems like a strange move from their marketing folks to me.
Game is nothing like Dark Souls. Souls games aren’t rogue like and are more traditional action RPG’s…just punishingly difficult. Rogue likes are all about repetition and improving your abilities the more you play even if you’re playing through the same areas again and again.
This game looks cool from a combat perspective
However I look at this game and think…its absolutely something i’d play. Not something i’d pay 70 bucks for. The only thing that bothers me is the speed…kind of makes me feel dizzy how shes always running in a weird usain bolt speed. Wish the game was a bit more exploration based like a metroid. would have been better.
Game will get good reviews…but a lot of them will ignore the price tag.
I mean all games can invalidate your time depending on what you want out of it.
Rogue likes are a type of genre that requires a different mindset as far as how you play them.
And I doubt you can play for 3 hours die and not achieve anything. From what i’ve seen you get weapons and unlock abilities that stick and make your future runs better.
Returnal will be a good game at least. Those other two aren’t worth 10 dollars let alone 70.
IF Returnal does end up reviewing rally well but selling poorly. Sony should be criticized heavily
But heres the thing…I am absolutely confident this game will be 40bucks in no time. PS Plus game by the end of the year.
The significant Dark Souls comparison is that while it was hard, there was a natural easy mode as you accrued souls (currency experience) for upgrades in tandem with you gaining personal skill (actual experience) which was satisfying for a lot of people. Returnal seems to be very much a roguelike where if you don’t enjoy solely personal development and overcoming an ever-increasing challenge, it’ll likely not be for you.
Of course the funny part of that is how usually 90% of people don’t like that kind of game, but obviously that won’t be the case this time. Suddenly people who couldn’t beat the tutorial on Cuphead will pretend to love Binding of Isaac-esque games, probably with “I love Hades!” being peppered throughout.
True, I guess I meant more when a game doesn’t respect your time. This isn’t unique to roguelikes or Souls games, it can just as easily apply to any game with too-infrequent save spots, stuff like unskippable cutscenes, and the like. I was enjoying Immortals for example but dropped it like a hot potato because of a glitch that wiped out some of my progress. I don’t have anything against hard games, but I just don’t have enough free time anymore and too many games available to persist in something that’s frustrating just because.
Part of the reason I don’t like roguelikes is the randomization/luck aspect, but it’s mostly because of the lack of progress. Roguelites are much more appealing to me. Taking Hades as an example, even in a failed run you can still earn various currencies, hear unique dialogue, and even increase your godhood if you have that setting turned on.
I watched some of the previews of Returnal and I think it looks pretty solid. I also see a game getting crazily overhyped because it’s an exclusive game during a major game drought. Hope the people who spend $70 for the game get their moneys worth.
I would happily take that bet. Sony is not going to go from a $70 retail release to a PS+ giveaway in a matter of months.
Are you sure Returnal doesn’t have upgrades that make progress easier later on?
What are you going to say when the reviews are really positive? Are the press lying to themselves too?
I think I’ll keep saying what I’ve been saying, I don’t need forum posters to put words in my mouth.
The visuals are evolutionary not revolutionary(however this is not necessarily a critique at housemarque or the PS5, it may just be the technical reality this generation of hardware is caperble of) the gunplay looks solid, how good the game is depends on how good the story is and the variety in gameplay activities. The best 3rd person shooters break up the action, with set pieces or other activities, I dont care how good the core gunplay is, it does get tedious.
I know this is going to be taken as sacrilege from those who love this genre, but …
I really wish there was a way to enjoy this as a co-op experience.
I said by the end of the year.
IF this game sells below expectations. It will absolutely drop in price or go on PS+/PSNow.
This is the same company that had the audacity to charge people 70 dollars for a mediocre arena racing game before realizing what a dumb move that was.
This whole 70 dollar thing will come back to bite Sony is the fucking arse.
Heres another bet. Outside of the absolute major AAA games…they’ll go back to 60 for these mid budget games.
And then we’ll laugh at them for trying to dictate and greedily trying to raise price for games.
Gamepass will also make it very difficult for Sony to charge 70 for every exclusive game.
FF16 is supposed to be a PS5 timed exclusive…you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll get SE to sell it for 70. And then watch it be 60 for PC and Xbox months later.
