Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Review

Bought it on Sunday and got my char to lvl 8. Hope that the combat as a mage gets more interesting when more skills get available, but all in all I am enjoying myself.

So I have quickly come to learn that the best way to collect material is to pretend to be Link and break everyone’s stuff.

I have found mage combat to be far more engaging when getting in close and using the orb and dagger combo rather than shooting stuff from long distance with the staff.

More powers certainly helps as well - but it’s really all about setting up arcane bombs with your own powers and detonations through combos with companions.

Pretty early on the game but, is this an eater egg? Or is there something related to this in the lore of Dragon Age? I don’t think I saw anything written about it in the area.

Decided to start a new mage character to see how it feels to play, and I love the Knife and Orb style.

Also look at my monstrocity!

Tried making him as close to a Skyrim Mer as I could.

Does anyone know what a Tool Ability is? Keep searching the game and online and I can never find what it actually is. Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is the abilities from runes on the tool we used to use to use companion abilities when they’re not with us.

I have gear that will say +20% more damage when using tools so I don’t think that it’s the spear we use for other’s abilities when they’re not with us. It has to be weapon related or something. It’s annoying because I have a legendary item that has a bunch of high percentage perks for tools but have no clue what that actually consists of. UGH.

I beat the game earlier today.

In case anyone is interested, I posted a mini-review in the Backlog Challenge thread. Link below.

Me trying to avoid romance while being supportive of my companions, the game giving me the best for me dialogue and making it romance option in a location that’s generally not suppose to be.

This game is really, really good. I love fantasy games in this style, it is really scratching an itch for me. Kinda makes me more excited for Avowed too.

I had an idea of what tools were and started a new character, this time a rogue. Tools are some of the skills that rogues use like this one

Described as a control, tool skill.

Thanks but I finally figured this out yesterday when I was going through the skill tree and as you show in the image, it says type: control, tool. Sadly though, I don’t have any of those skills unlocked at all. Vast majority of my skills are on the left side of the screen with that specialization unlocked.

In general, im over 60 hours into the game. Just reached Act 2 story wise. Have been doing everything I come across. All side/faction/companion quests. Have unlocked all the companions. Overall, loving the game and it’s currently my new game of the year as of now. Still have a long ways to go though.

Yeah, enjoying my time with the game immensely. I will need to take some time to read through the pieces of lore we find around the world.

Currently at 47 hours in total, just hit level 40 and feeling that unless an enemies have a large level gap(10 or higher), are in large groups with projectile support(forcing me to target support), have a really good wombo combo(I got hit with one while fighting an enemy at lvl50 when I was at 35) or immune to crowd control. The damage and crowd control make current boss fights go by quick.

Curious what graphical mode people are playing on. I liked the performance mode but I really liked the upgraded visuals on fidelity mode so I stuck with fidelity.

Im kinda choosing fidelity mode on most games now, which makes me feel weird I am choosing 30fps…

It’s not weird, a lot of games have really solid 30fps modes, wanting to enjoy a little more graphics is something I do from time to time.

But I do always go for 60fps if available(using 60), specially because I have issues with framerate/pacing. So getting VRR from 40fps to 60fps allows me to enjoy a game I couldn’t if it wasn’t available.

I guess 9999 damage is the highest single hit damage we can do? Or is there anything that can increase that damage?

Playing on Performance Mode. I always go with 60FPS. Dragon Age looks excellent in Performance Mode so no issues graphics wise whatsoever.

Quality mode for me, but then it’s been established I’m a dinosaur who can’t tell the difference in frame rates lol

Quick question. For valuable items should I keep some for future crafting or are these items only worth selling them and do not serve another purpose?
