Bloomberg Japan: PS5 Production cut by 4 million Units. Cites yield issues *update* Sony responds

Nikkei also reported it, but said it went up to 9 mil units by end of FY.

“Meanwhile Sony, the world’s No. 2 video game console maker after Nintendo by shipments, has also raised production orders for its upcoming PlayStation 5 to around 9 million units, from the roughly 6 million units it had planned in spring, sources familiar with the matter said.”

Starting to sound like they might have internal targets that are ambitious and yield problems are limiting what they wanna commit to. Bloomberg/Nikkei likely commenting on those internal targets and whatever dynamics are at play there while Sony on the record can just say nothing in an official capacity has changed.

The performance of ML or VRS is not quantifiable in a way you can convince the type of consumer we talk about. You can’t say xyz TF, you can’t say xyz GB/s, you can’t say xyz fps, you can’t say xyz pixels. All you can do to put out a relative number like 20% more whatever **. Typically you earn those asterisks to clearify it is dependent on the games.

You can say XSX version gets XYZ res and XYZ framerate compared to PS5. Enough to let MS market their version broadly as the best playing console version, which DOES have an impact on casual mindshare (see: 360/PS3).

You can’t as a) that kind of comparable advertising is not allowed in Germany for instance and b) you can’t because I do not think a publisher would allow it as he want to sell on all platforms and c) you can’t because you can’t compare exclusives

We are not discussing what is the better console here, we are discussing what is the message that actually comes thru to the normal consumer.

When someone says there is poor yield due to (E)SRAM, you know they know very little about process technology. Memory cells are very regular and redundancy are always added to avoid defect issue. Memory has inherent clock limits compared to logic, but you’ll know the speed range from the test chips. Similarly for logic, before final mass production, corner lots are fabed, the FF, SS, typical, FS/SF corners will give you a very good indication of performance and yield at given frequencies. So, in a way, it is difficult to understand why Sony are having concern this late, once mass production has started. Usually you don’t commit to mass production under these characterization work has been completed since then you know your die cost.

Cboat was just a shared Mod account on GAF created to spread FUD about Xbox, it was mostly run by Bish.

They can say it broadly, as I said. They can say ‘the games play best on Xbox’, etc. That absolutely gets through to customers. It got through to customers buying 360 as well as PS4 just fine.

Yeah, at the very least seems to be a case of telephone and internal targets being mixed with what was actually ordered then.

Yeah, I’ve heard similar claims, dunno how true is that, but it was clear he had an agenda and damaged Xbox a lot. Kinda insane that place had so much power a random user could just trigger that ripple effect.

Nope! Can you tell me more, please?

Thank you for those examples. None of them had some sort of marketing that focussed on development methods like VRS and ML. The message got through because of the simple message they had.

I think you are misunderstanding me. I’m not saying there is any marketing ‘based on VRS, ML, etc’. I’m saying the marketing is based on the results of using VRS/ML/etc to gain notable performance advantages beyond the TF advantage. And that this performance delta is something that can marketed broadly.

Well, if Mochizuki is wrong about this report, can we still trust his report about a BOM of $450 for the PS5 from last February ?

They can market that after launch if the face-offs are of the results we are assuming, that is true

A few outlets reported it and I swear I read one that said they wanted 15 million for the fiscal year, but can’t find it right now.

Hmm, thanks for the link but I guess I don’t understand. Doesn’t the PS5 have some BC? Not as good as the Xbox, I’m sure.

I don’t believe their damage control. Sony lying? Oh nope not at all. Especially just before their show.

Stock market dropping brutally is an indication investors are informed of some things.

IGN was lightning flash fast to dismiss the news as soon as Sony responded opposed to 2013 with MS.

It should have it yeah as Sony said yes to select titles but for more clarity we have to wait to check the real deal cause it’s a bit nebulous. We still don’t know exactly if it is 1:1 or enhanced. Hopefully we can assume the latter but we’ll see.

I’m pretty sure and confident it is not at all at MS BC. MS BC team is in its own league.

Thanks for clarifying. I totally agree about the MS BC team, it was a big factor in my picking up an Xbox One! At the end of the day, I just want everyone to get what they want from their boxes so I hope the PS5 has a robust solution =)

Same as you as I have a huge backlog on my ps4 account and would hate to see it gone. I litterally rebought almost all the games on my Xbox account lol.

I just want the PS5 to be a great performing console & reliable stable quiet one cause I had a really bad experience with the console. Crashes, psn freezes, lags by waves, tiring jet enjine sound, customer service refusing to refund and change my controller, denied access to my online account due to their inability to connect me via the browser, and other minor annoyances. All of that really soured me and left a really bad taste.

That is why I’m looking at them under a microscope
