Bloomberg Japan: PS5 Production cut by 4 million Units. Cites yield issues *update* Sony responds

Ouch. Thanks for the post. Knew it that 50% was critical. Plus if the full chip is 36CU and they push it hard expecting it works no wonder the mess coming in hot after. Sounds bad, worrying.

This makes no sense. 50% yield issues, but still 11 million units? 50% yield issues and expensive tech, but $399 /$449 price?

Those are more or less exclusive. The Ps4 was much cheaper to produce and in a better yield situation. They sold 7 million and the console was $399

Maybe they make 11 million to account for the 50% and wind up with 6.5?

5.5. :stuck_out_tongue:

Who knows if this is even true. If it is, Panello thinks it could bump up the BOM as much as $100. 0.0

It is true, how can’t it be

Stocks don’t necessarily only react to real news. Odds are high it’s def true though. Question is what affect it has on console price. Maybe they eat the cost, but then again, they can just price drop in spring after selling out at $599 this holiday anyhow. /shrugs

Should also note that what 50% refers to is not known either here. See my earlier post with Panello’s comments for more on that.

Yes saw it but seeing stock reacting brutally like that is not a good look they know more than us. You know stock don’t move quickly like that due to simple rumors. Otherwise Sony would have spoken publicly to prevent that. But they declined to comment so it means there is potentially substance to that.

The situation might be worse than we thought.

Imagine the money Sony is losing on these yields 50% & people think this console will be 399

:phil_lmao:

The only viable solution I see is cutting CUs or downclocking to 1,8. I don’t see other ways.

I’m at work but I got a alert about the news. I have a idea on how this could effect unit availability and pricing and how Sony could pivot. Will write up later

Ok warn me when you posted it. Thanks.

This is crazy if it’s true and if this is the case, which sites don’t and do pick up on it. It’ll show true colours. Sites went out of their way to make articles like ā€œthe names are too consuing for meā€ but if this article is true that is a lot worse than getting the name of the console mixed up.

For Sony’s sake I hope it isn’t true.

11 million units for launch until March 31st is still a healthy number to have though, isn’t it? They bumped up their order of 10 million to 15 million a little while ago and it’s a really, really good thing they did.

I don’t think MS will have that many units available, will they? It’s extremely hard to gauge demand at this point considering the prices of both aren’t out and preorders aren’t online for either.

Can anyone give me a ELI5 breakdown of yields and SoC production? I think I understand it but would be great to get it from someone who knows what they’re talking about!

This time MS outpaced Sony by 2:1 on available units but don’t remember where I got this info

Sony dropped from 15 to 11 millions till march 31

Also I remember this article

Sony Is Struggling With PlayStation 5 Price Due to Costly Parts

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-02-14/sony-is-struggling-with-playstation-5-price-due-to-costly-parts

Found this by accident, heh, but they don’t state where those messages came from:

I call him gossip man! Remember that Bungie and MS deal? Bungie made it clear - he was wrong.

Let’s not dive down the rabbit hole of MisterXMedia style info with nothing but hearsay to back it up. Please. For my sanity.

Am I surprised Sony seems to he having yield issues with the SoC, no because the clocks they are pushing are really high. Do I believe they are currently having 50% yields, no. If Sony were having those sort of yields they would have to delay the console, it is as simple as that.

this seems like half the story and/or the sources implying causality when it’s not there

they are having manufacturing issues and they had to cut production by 4m units, but if the request was always a yield of 50% that’s not the reason why

the goal is always lowest cost per chip, not yield x wafer

there may be other issues actually
