Your top 5 games of the gen

That’s a shame there was a lot for me this gen :frowning: what is your favourite genre?

  1. Inside. Game of the generation for several reasons, be it art direction, music, atmosphere, and most importantly visual narrative, no other game has come close to talk about its themes the way this game did. The puzzle platforming was very clever and grounded too, just felt it could have had more of it. Playdead themselves have been a major inspiration in life and Limbo was an important game for me in pursuing a creative profession.

  2. Sekiro. 2019 GOTY for a reason, every other game that tries melee combat feels embarrassing to play after playing this game. The rhythm and discipline of combat in this game man Holy shit, the animation, the world design, sound, bosses (the bosses!), everything about it… except the camera of course, but that’s fromsoft staple at this point.

  3. Ori WOTW GOTY 2020. Simply gorgeous, smooth and repeat crying every time I watch the ending. This game absolutely perfected traversal in a sidescrolling platformer.

  4. Hyper Light Drifter. Yet another gem from 2016, a really good zelda like and yet another major inspiration on a personal level. Loved the pixel art, not so much all the games that started aping its style lazily. Loved the music, loved the movement and the mix of melee and range combat and the loose ODST like progression structure.

  5. Warframe (for the first 200 hours or so that I played lol). Imo the best free to play business model in the entire industry. Extremely strong sense of mystery and awe, best Space Ninja power fantasy with big variety of characters and weapons and abilities and a really good freeform traversal system with those bullet jump and rolls (honestly was a crazy fun experience learning that in itself). Have been away from the game for a good while now, the grind eventually caught up. Hope to return to it sometime in the future when there’s more fulfilling content.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2. Rarely do I fall in love with a game like I did with this. Explored, hunted, cried, laughed and lost myself in the world.

2. The Witcher 3. The world, the quests and stories. The monsters and characters. All so, so good.

3. Nier: Automata. The biggest surprise to me. Never been a fan of japanese games, style or anything like that really, then Nier showed up on Game Pass and I was blown away. Sad and beutiful.

4. Forza Horizon 4. Hundreds of hours of great racing and crazy gameplay. And I don’t even like cars… Such a great game.

5. Gears 5. Great campaign, great co-op and MP. Hundreds of hours once again… I never get tired of shooting things in this game.

Honorable mentions: Hellblade, Titanfall 2, Fallout 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Battlefield 1, Life is Strange, Pillars of Eternity.

Honorable mentions go to Witcher 3, Inside, Halo MCC, Gorogoa and Crackdown 3. And Nier Automata had the bestest music

RPG probably, if I had to choose. But there were so many different games last gen where after finishing it I just had that feeling like, “Yeah, that was a home run.” Mass Effect games, Dragon Age games, Dead Space, BioShock series, Call of Duty 4, Saints Row 3, Gears of War series, Skyrim, Borderlands, Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2, Uncharted 2, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy XIII, Tales of Vesperia… I could keep going. This gen, I’ve liked plenty of games fine, but that feeling of “That was AMAZING” has been hard to find.

After my top 5 that I already listed, I had plenty of Indies among my most memorable of the gen. Both Ori’s, Cuphead, Dead Cells and Slay the Spire were top tier games in or near the top 10 games of the gen for me. Children of Morta, Inside and Bloodstained were in that next tier. Even though they aren’t thought of as an Indie, Asobo’s Plague Tale kept me captivated better than most of the big budget narrative driven AAAs. When I look back on this gen, the things that will stand out are From Software, Rise of the Indies, the comeback of turn based strategy games and Game Pass discovery.

Slay the Spires an amazing game. Inspired me to go make a card game in Unreal Engine. :fire:

It is. Easily one of the most addictive games of this gen. I’ve never played a videogame card game outside of Poker on the 360 and never thought I would. After discovering Slay the Spire in Game Pass, I went on a card game buying spree. lol

Funny you mention it. It’s on deck for me. Going to play it this weekend. I like the tone and atmosphere of what I’ve seen. Seems like a good October game.

Better than bioshock, not kidding.

Interesting you say that. Jez Corden recently raved about it too. Think he called it one of his games of the gen. Looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about.

I consider this generation from 2013 to 2020. So games released in 2013 and releasing this year will make the list:

#1 Path of Exile - just the best RPG out there. So deep and complex mechanics, yet simple hack and slay combat. Best F2P model and content dropping every 3 months.

#2 Sea of Thieves - just the best sandbox game with the only purpose of having fun. Next to no UI and it also looks beautiful.

#3 Cyberpunk 2077 - i know it’s not out yet, but it will be The Witcher 3 with a more interesting setting for me and the combat will be better and more fluid.

#4 Microsoft Flight Simulator - it’s earth porn and new impressive technology, i both admire. Just look at this: https://youtu.be/Wu4b2juP2sc

#5 Overwatch - i sunk the most MP hours into this game. It’s the best hero shooter and no SP didn’t hurt the game at all

Misses the list, but still special:
Halo MCC - i hate remasters and remakes and will never pay again for something i already played unless the value is great. They even went the extra mile and gave 5 games on PC for the same 60 bucks i invested.
Forza Horizon Series - just great and constantly good. I only dislike how it became to easy to make money in 4. The add-ons are dope.
The Division 1 - the looter shooter. Defined a genre and i sunk a lot hours into it. Even bought the second worse game.
Ghost of Tsushima - like Cyberpunk a game I didn’t play yet, but still the only Sony first party exclusive formula game I like because the setting is my thing and they now added co-op, samurai classes, PVP and even raids. Will play it on Ps Now or PC at some point

A cross all platforms:

  1. Killer Instinct 2013

  2. The Witcher 3

  3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

  4. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

  5. CrackDown 3

** Also “Bullet Soul” via BC was insane!
