If anyone’s looking for a medium length game, This Bed We Made is a great few hours.
I didn’t get the best ending on this first go as I forgot about one little bit (probably best to check a guide just before the final elevator ride if you want the best outcome) but now redoing it as I like the characters too much for anything but the best.
The few puzzles are fun, snooping is fun and there’s a great backstory to many of the characters that helps you to care for them.
It was really the only game I could use for the TA target this month. I have fond memories of the game, as I was a fan of podracing from the movie as a kid. I wouldn’t say it holds up particularly well, but was nice for the nostalgia.
Finished Chants of Sennaar + 0 and Case of the Golden Idol + 0 from Game Pass.
Golden Idol was weird but not super hard and if you give up and use a guide it’s easier, but not really my favorite.
Chants of Sennaar was interesting, you mostly are trying to figure out meanings of words in I think 4 or maybe 5 made up languages and solve some translation related puzzles, and then occasionally have some sneaking through areas related puzzles. I liked it, thought it was good though could probably have a few quality of life things added to make it easier to translate between languages. Glad I played that one.
A very basic Rogue like turn based RPG, with slight deckbuilding aspects. It’s an interesting combo, but I would have liked to see more story to go with it.
-1 Star Wars Outlaws
My preorder was charged today. I have mentioned previously that I only preorder one game each year and this is one I chose for this year.
+1 - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (XSX) - Beat both Soma and Julius’ campaigns, still just as amazing as they were in 2003 on the GBA. Honestly, AoS and Dawn of Sorrow are my personal favorite Castlevanias (yes, even above SotN); the gameplay mechanics were such a welcome evolution over the previous decade of Castlevanias, Soma was as equally fresh and innovative as a main character (given his connection to Dracula), and the level design throughout was spectacular. The soul mechanic also provided a metric ton of replayability.
I’ve beat Halo 3 a ton especially on MCC but going back to it now it feels the wierdest to me, like a odd in between from the first two and yet not modern feeling either. Also I forgot how weak you feel in 3 constenly a shot or two from death. Story is still great just feel the gameplay lacks oddly enough.
I played the 360 version like 10 years ago or something, liked the story but struggled mightily with the controls. I was still not used to gaming with a controller as I was still primarily a PCMR muppet at that time. All those QTE’s etc… very frustrating when you still have to look down to find which one is the Y-button .
This time it was a very enjoyable experience! Did a much more thorough playthrough as well, with every achievement except the MP-ones taken.
It’s a really good game, with lots of action and a very cool setting. Exploring the island was an awesome adventure. Lara is cool af, and her VA did a great job to set the mood.
I liked how the progression worked where you got new toys at a steady pace which impacted gameplay and kept it fresh.
I think my only real complaint is that the tombs were way too easy and short. Expected more from those.
Love the Sniper Elite series. This one’s a lot more linear than the latest entries. But it holds up quite nicely.
+0 Beautiful Katamari (360)
One of the rare games that give me motion sickness. Since I’m not particularly enjoying the gameplay either (more frustrating than fun,) I think I’m done with it.
I bought this game shortly after launch four (I think?) years ago. I played it for about five hours and enjoyed it, but got distracted by something else that was more in my wheelhouse and never went back.
Out of all the games in my backlog, this one was very near the top of the, “I am definitely going to play that some day” list. After absolutely falling in love with Unicorn Overlord earlier this year (by the same dev) I moved the game up in priority. I had a long weekend for Labor Day, so I finally decided to knock it out.
This game is a fascinating mix of two distinct game types:
an adventure game/visual novel that delivers the narrative
a real-time with pause strategy/ tower defense game to provide more “gameplay” and to break up the lengthy story sections.
The basic premise of the story is mechs vs kaiju, but it turns out to be much more than that. I won’t go into details due to (many) spoilers, but the entire narrative is basically a mystery that gets gradually unraveled over the thirty-hour playtime.
I enjoyed this game quite a bit. I have never played another game like it in terms of story structure, genre, playstyle mashup, etc. For that reason alone it’s worth checking out - but the story and the (strategy) gameplay were really enjoyable as well.
Definitely glad I finally got this one checked off the list.
I’m patient too for the most part, once in a while though it’s fun to jump into something brand new. With so many games coming this fall that I actually want to play, I’ll probably jump into one or two at least.
