XboxEra's 2024 Backlog Challenge |OT| Surely this is the year?

I did check. I bought some car packs, but not the expansions. That’s where the confusion was. I knew I bought some kind of DLC, so I thought it was the expansions.

No worries, with the amount of games we play it’s hard to keep track of everything.

I’m going to give myself a completion (barring objections) for NCAA Football 2025. Of course, you can play any annual sports game forever, since there is not really an end to them. But, I bought this solely for the Dynasty mode and I have basically “beaten” everything I cared to do (for now). I have won 3 national championships, had top recruiting classes, won virtually every player award (top QB, top RB, etc). I have put about 100 hours into the game since launch. Frankly, I have burned myself out on the game before football season even starts. Ha.

So, unless anyone objects that is a +1 for me, bringing my total to 9.5.

I’ve also finished a couple of short puzzle games in the last month, but I can’t even recall the names off the top of my head, so I’ll have to post later to claim credit for them.

No objections here, I think it’s the only logical way to judge a completion for something like sports games… and I know how much time that was even if you hadn’t put in the hour marker, so yeah, you’re good

  • +.5 - Doom: Eternal TAG Part 2 (XSX): I enjoyed this expansion even more than the last. From a lore perspective, I don’t have enough positive words to express the love I have for what the team at iD have done since they brought back Doom in 2016; I’d argue Doom already had better lore than most shooters than spawned in its original era, but iD managed to take a blank slate character and turn him, and the world, into this vast portrait. 10/10.

Total = 15.5

Edit: Added my mini-review.

No objections, sounds good!

I wonder if I should try an American football game someday… I don’t even know the rules hah. But it looks very tactical, and that always interest me.

Anyway, nice completion! Don’t forget to post those other ones too.

They certainly are very tactical. However, if you know nothing about the sport the learning curve will be quite high. Just trying to decipher the playbooks will be a challenge.

If you are really interested I recommend playing the “old” version of Madden (or NCAA) whenever it rolls onto Game Pass Ultimate. (Not sure if there is one there now or not). That would at least let you try it out for no cost.

If you really want to try to understand the games, there are all kinds of tutorial videos on YouTube.

I never shy away from trying new games or genres! Quite the opposite, I find it very exciting nowadays, and I blame Game Pass for that

The tactical aspect of it is very enticing, I enjoy that in games. But yeah, the learning curve will be high… I know very little about the sport itself. I should probably watch a couple of matches.

I shall take a look at what’s in the GP library!

What I’ve played of both of the Keflings games I really enjoyed - I need to finish those

Never played the first but World was fun and addicting, worth going back to if you ask me

Forza Horizon +1.

The first game in the series unexpectedly turned out to be one of my favourites. I have only played the new ones, 4 and 5, where 4 is the first one I played properly. Was surprised how well the first game held up, both the gameplay and visuals is very good.

Best of all though is the progression! It felt so much better to have to fight a bit to get cars, credits and unlock things and not be bombarded with 2000 cars, billions of credits the minute you boot up the game. I felt like I had accomplished something once I finally beat Darius Flynt in the final. I really hope they can go back to something like this, or at least give us the option to have a more fun progression, in the upcoming games.

The racing felt good, but that is something that is obviously improved in the later titles though. Felt decent enough on my setup though. The AI cheating was a bit too obvious at times, they do a better job of masking that in the new ones.

I really wish I was into racing games when I bought this, as I did not buy the Rally expansion at the time and now it’s too late. I hate this delisting crap.

Anyway, very good game and I enjoyed it A LOT.

+0 NightSky (Steam)

Nice little puzzle platformer in a Limbo kind of style, which I enjoyed right up to the final level. Which then basically gives you the middle finger, tasking you with replaying the game to find hidden stars to unlock the rest of that final level to continue. Since that’s just annoying, I’m moving on.

AI: The Somnium Files +1

Eventually back into some gaming after getting hooked on watching the Olympics and something totally different from the backlog that I started on PC in Aug 22 and finished on Console 2 years later thanks to play anywhere.

I’m not sure how you describe this game as its pretty limited in terms of action and heavy on dialogue which I can find annoying but the story and characters made up for it. Had some real laugh out loud moments then other times the story can be somewhat sad when you find out characters history plus a few twists. The multiple story lines also added to the game overall.

New total +12.5

I’ll be back into Judgment and Scarlet Nexus now and if I ever get time Xenoblade 2 on Switch which always gets passed for the next thing on Xbox.

I have decided to shift my strategy once again. I had created a calendar of games that I had already started to complete for the friendly completion percentage competition, but it didn’t work for the first couple weeks, obviously. So I have decided to throw that strategy out the window and just play the games I WANT to play, regardless of completion time or if they help me in the competition at all.

So backlog completions will probably be few and far between going forward. But at least I am in the positives, meaning that I did make a net gain on my backlog this year!

I really enjoyed that game, to my own surprise. It’s incredibly far out of my comfort zone but I tried it thanks so GP and was hooked. It’s damn weird but unravelling the story was a great journey.

I got the sequel too, but I haven’t finished that one, the story did not grab me as much and I felt the dynamics between the protagonists and AI did not work as well as it did in the first. I should give it another chance some day though.

Yeah don’t think I’ll rush into a sequel given backlog as much as I enjoyed it.

+1 One Night Stan

A short visual novel about the titular one night stand. Do you find out what her name is? Do you get kicked out? With or without your clothes? Do you stay friends? Do you piece together everything that happened past night? So many endings! Of all the Ratalaika Games I have played, this is my favorite, not that that says much.
