Because Square Enix at this point is very clearly a lost cause, and I think expecting anything from crumbs from them at this point is extremely optimistic. I think it’s for the best that people assume Square Enix games aren’t coming to xbox, and be pleasantly surprised when they do then the other way around.
Forget about FF and focus on Persona and Atlus, I’m just over 8 hours in P5R and it’s better than anything square has put out in 2 decades
If I was MS id be putting big efforts into getting 6 on GP Day 1, that game will be big
Nintendo has their own jrpg series. Not sure why Xbox can’t make their own. There shouldn’t be a need to rely on square.
Xbox should try to get the Legend of Heroes/Trails series as well. I think it’s the best JRPG series.
I’m sure people could have said the same about many of the Japanese franchises hitting Xbox until recently, including Persona, and yet here we are. Square Enix is just a business like every other Japanese company that hasn’t given Xbox much time in the past decade, the more Xbox becomes a viable platform for Japanese games the more these things stop happening. Sony has been able to lock down Final Fantasy in particular in part because of this, and I suspect they’ve been so aggressive on it because they know how important Final Fantasy is in the JRPG landscape and aim to use this to lock Xbox out of the genre. It’s disappointing we haven’t seen more games from Square Enix (though, let’s not forget they still have 5 games launching on Xbox this year) but I see no reason to dismiss entirely that Final Fantasy on Xbox would be a good thing.
It’d be nice to see Microsoft invest in new IP’s in Japan, including JRPGs, but we’re not exactly close to that happening nor would it replace one of the biggest JRPG franchises.
Square enix is clearly bought out by Sony. All big games will skip Xbox from now on. I hope forspoken flops.
Square follows the money, remember when they were buddy buddy with Nintendo until Sony came on the scene.
Nintendo now has their own jrpgs such as xenoblade which is better imo thus now Nintendo fans don’t care that much about final fantasy.
Second biggest? So who’s first
Based on total franchise sales Pokemon is the best selling JRPG of all time, Final Fantasy second and Dragon Quest third.
the problem is that Square is a ass backwards corporation, in a world where so many Japanese publishers and developers have embraced multiplatform, There’s a point where it’s good to just accept that Square as a publisher is run by idiots who don’t know what they’re doing.
This is the same company that sold some of the most talented studios it had for NFTs. that’s like me selling the car I need for work, because I wanted crack money. This is the same company that chooses to take EGS deals instead of just launching it’s games on steam where there has been a proven and rather significant (as demonstrated by Sega with Yakuza and now persona) audience for JRPGs.
Square enix is a business like any other, and it feels like it’s in the business of sabotaging itself as well. I don’t want to think about where Square would be right now if it weren’t for FF14 and YoshiP. They are a company that is always, ALWAYS prioritizing the short term check, over long term franchise growth, just their approach to their titles on PC speaks for itself, forget Xbox.
That’s what I’m really hoping is part of the NISA Xbox rumor. Sadly they would be missing Sky trilogy and Cold Steel 1 and 2, but at least they’d get the Crossbell duo and everything after Cold Steel 3.
They’re buddy buddy with Nintendo again. Plenty of Square Switch exclusives coming out these days, almost always higher rated than the Sony Square exclusives too.
I also saw something interesting posted on Installbase, from Square Enix’s latest shareholder report:
Achieving major growth in the game industry is difficult now for companies that compete primarily in the Japanese market, given its graying demographics. As such, it is critical for our business that we produce hit titles that speak to the global market, which offers greater scale in terms of both customers and sales volumes.
In other words, the Japanese market is no longer sufficient for achieving a level of earnings that enables us to recoup our development investment and generate a profit, and we therefore need to approach our development efforts based on the assumption that we have to succeed in the global market.
So basically they want to do better in the “global market”, something Xbox is very much going to grow in (and already significantly has). I wonder if Xbox will start looking tantalizing for them very soon…
Their buddy buddy with Nintendo because their makers share is huge and they dominate Japan .
Xbox should be trying to compete by either buying a studio like sega and getting atlus or money hatting like Sony. Remember that project re fantasy game, they should try money hat that.
Or by building your own jrpg studio which will take time.
On PS4 the most anticipated remake in the world sold 7m copies…On 100m+ installbase
Very bad business to be honest if we look at their financial decisions
What year is it to compare Pokemon with Final Fantasy? Pokemon on Switch reaches the heights that Final Fantasy cannot even dream about anymore.
See Square Enix doing a couple of brain dead decisions like EGS exclusive launches on PC and another Sony moneyhats and then blame the gaming market for not reaching expectations
Maybe it’s gonna be a real good TGA?
Still, I’m not staying up for it.
He is saying the same things all the time but rarely lives up to the expectations.
Probably saw something from Kojima.
I do recall that he was more “calm” with the hype message last year. He brought it with realistic expectations. I agree though, it often isn’t what it’s hyped up to be. I still find the shows enjoyable, but that’s because I can fast forward through the trash, haha.
Death Stranding 2 likely then, because something tangible from his Xbox project? I find that unlikely.
Death Stranding 2 and I sleep.
Was there many JRPGs that sold better on PS4? No one said JRPGs were suddenly huge, just that they’re in demand on Xbox.
What does that have to do with anything? Who compared it to Pokemon?
You said that Final Fantasy is the second after Pokemon.
It hasn’t been posted to YouTube, but WSJ are hosting it on their site:
video doesn’t work
edit: ah I see exclusivity stuff for members, lame
