Yes, they did a really good job with the remake. Mass Effect 1 was tough to play, but they did good work in modernizing it

It’s a really fun game but does Xbox need another studio making shooters? Especially if ABK goes through and they have Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Raven etc.

I’d much rather they go for the types of studios they don’t have. For example the ā€˜Sony’ third person narrative type studios, Kids and Fighters etc.

I really don’t want them to acquire another studio which makes Shooters or RPG’s.

Someone like Crystal Dynamics, Eidos or IOI would have been brilliant. Alternatively Capcom, Ubisoft or Rockstar if you want to go bigger. It’s those type of games that Xbox need IMO to get their recognition back, especially at critic-heavy places like Game Awards which are dominated by those type of games. At the moment I feel like Ninja Theory are carrying all that responsibility.

Don’t they just need games with a wide appeal which high on life does have?

I’d be fine with them acquiring Squanch, it’d probably be cheap enough to not even require regulatory approval.

I wouldnt consider them an FPS studio though, I am sure they could easily do platformers (High on Life already has plenty of it) or other types of games.

I get the impression that Xbox’s ultimate aim is to become the biggest gaming subscription service, which IMO they won’t be able to do if their first party output/exclusives is limited to specific genres (shooters and RPG)

The only reason I still buy PS games is because they offer those big third person action/adventure type games which Xbox doesn’t. If they did Xbox would have even more of my time and PS would have to have to become even more competitive to get my attention.

It’s the same with Nintendo, I still buy their consoles/games as it’s one of the few places I can find quality party/family games. If Xbox had these I would spend more of my time/money on the Xbox eco-system.

Oh, I dont disagree that they need other genres. However, I believe they need 50+ studios, so there is plenty of room to add a creative young partner studio thats made several different style games and a huge hit. Who knows what type of games the studio will want to make in the future.

You have multiple 3rd person action games coming to the platform (Game Pass) next year. Flintlock, Wo-Long, Ravenlok, Lies of P, etc.

Next year is going to be crowded.

Plus Ninja Theory has you covered if you’re into the "cinematic " third person walk ā€˜n’ talk.

I do understand and agree with your overall point BTW.

Buuuut I have a feeling that Squanch Games strength lies in its story telling abilities. I’m only an hour in and I can tell it’s a fully realized universe, portrayed effectively and backed up by effective dialogue and voice acting.

I was impressed by the juggling mechanic with the base weapon. I’m sure it’s been done in FPS games before, but it felt fresh and innovative all over again to me. But I have a feeling that they could have easily made a 3rd person game in this Universe if they wanted to go the action/adventure route. My early impressions are that it’s not going to be a stellar FPS game but rather that the FPS mechanics will be serviceable till I finish the game.

I hit a part where there are little cutesy alien critters in a cave (that are used as drugs) and I’m thinking they can make a platformer with one of those characters in this rich universe.

So I think if they would be a smart purchase. After all their next game isn’t going to be very different from the last and their fifth game needs to be different otherwise this becomes old hat, quickly. I think they will be smart enough to recognize this and branch out to different types of games using the same brand of humor.

I think Xbox should just go after good studios period, regardless of what they’re making.

I fully embraced the Xbox ecosystem knowing that almost the majority of their games aren’t what I’m exactly into.

I vastly prefer the type of 1st party games that Sony makes but the diversity and wide range games that are offered on Gamepass is what made me give them a chance this generation.

If theres a potential studio to be acquired and they make quality games ? There’s no downside in buying them, regardless if they make FPS’s.

Playing Mass Effect for the first time? I’m a bit jealous

Sure they are holding up. There is still nothing like it.

Played the first hour and I’m already hooked on the world building.

We’ll see if it holds up for me. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I have been lately, but it’s been an issue for too long for me not to keep tabs on it

So once a week or so I literally record a video of it to keep tabs lol

It coming in March, that still a long ways away between now and than. Plenty of time for Phil to make a Gamepass deal with them.

The Podcast is FRIDAY this week! The normal time slot would be Christmas Eve for us and Christmas Morning for Nick so we moved it a day forward.

People, come one. I get it, at least on a certain level, but first person is really not a genre. I don’t think of High on Life as a similar genre to Halo for example, that’d be just… unrepresentative of its reality. It’d be like saying The Last of Us is in the same genre of Gears or The Division. Or Assassin’s Creed is in the same genre of Dark Souls.

I think the point is that just like that Sony style game chart - in our case Xbox has its Xbox style game chart

But Xbox has a lot of big AAA first person games.

The funny thing is, he actually asked other developers what they thought about Game Pass and based on what they told him he wanted to join it, not only does that go against the whole narrative that devs hate it or w/e or it harms them. If game pass was so bad there wouldn’t be devs suggesting other devs to do it and then those devs actually doing it.

On the High on Life topic, I’ve noticed a lot of people saying don’t take what reviews say all the time because of the public praise from the game and how most people love it. The weird thing about this is seeing reviewers coming out and complaing that people are saying this or still moaning about the game being bad and so on, which to me is funny because it seems more and more when this happens, reviewers think their word is final and get offended and upset when they’re in the minority. Not Jessie or anyone from the team on here though, just the big outlets, it’s like being on a big outlet like that gets to their head.
