Hm no… the money is real whether it’s cash or digital.
Even music streaming did not invent anything new - it is just the evolution of all those media players and various devices we used to have. Basically the “perfected” use-case.
People had libraries of disks or cassettes because they could play them any time they want in various devices. People wanted to be portable and thus there were walkmans and so on. So people had libraries of disks.
Then media formats like MP3 made various MP3 players mainstream and you did not to bring cassettes or disks with you, but keep a lot of music in the player’s memory. So people had libraries of media files.
In parallel there existed various stores where you could rent disks, cassettes and there was hostings with music files. Those were the physical stores.
Subscriptions are just the perfect approach that combines all the previous use cases (bring the music with you, have all the music, rent it) and all of that while you can use your regular device (like phone or laptop) and Internet access (with ability to download).
But this is more about the idea of renting/subscribing to things in general. Something I have no problems with, I love Game Pass.
It was about buying extra things for these rented things, also with the caveat that you don’t even know how long that rented access is. That is what makes no sense to me.
There are people who still buy vinyls so…It becomes very and very uncommon to return games. I mean how often these days you have a case where people share the disk with their friends? It is very uncommon.
See my response above. I have no issues with subscriptions.
My context is different
A digital license which you are not using won’t bother you but seeing an actual thing in your home which you can’t use anymore will definitely bother you
Another way a game rent license differs from renting a car is that, after the end of rent period your license will simply expire but in case of car it will be rented to someone else
Yeah, but my comment was related to slightly different topc with @KakkaKarrotKake
But your point is that you don’t understand why people buy additional features to the stuff they don’t own and as I explain it is all about the convenience, enjoyment and so on. Why people buy various skins and other stuff if the game servers can close in a couple of years?
100% I cannot imagine how I would move between various houses and countries if I had a huge collection of physical games. I would have to buy it again.
I ultimately don’t care about ownership, so I am fine paying for something one time enjoying it, and keeping it moving.
That said, I don’t buy a ton of DLC anyway lol
I bought the streets of Rage 4 DLC while it was on gamepass because I was planning to buy it once on sale.
FYI
In this context I was talking about the un-used stereo and not the disc of physical games
Well, you quoted me so I assumed we had a conversation.
That’s fair. I don’t have to own everything i consume either. My point is very specifically related to buying and owning additional content for things I don’t own and don’t even know how long my rental period is.
Yeah for the most part I buy a game, play it then move on - and if I buy the DLC I play it once and move on. Not ALWAYS, but most of the time. From a practical perspective it doesn’t actually make that big a difference if I properly own the game or not. Something like Forza is perhaps an exception because I go back and replay it from time to time but if I were to stop having game pass I’d likely just go buy Forza anyway (likely at a saving compared to buying it at launch).
I know in USA atleast, people kind of rent there iphones with carriers
And they might buy a phone cover/protecting case for that rented iphone
Does this satisfy you?
I think Mort just wanted to argue with people today.
I think we can assume PCF took all of this into account when they made the deal lol… they obviously needed the funding for the project. But will see where it goes from here.
No.
I might be in a bit of a mood… What gave it away? Haha
