“Pure JRPGs” don’t really exist anymore. Most of them are more action RPG’s now which really sucks.

Huge disagree. Jrpgs absilutely should not follow the open world format
Lets take a look at ff15 and the utter garbagefest that was
Ff7 remake is very constrained because its bare bones content wise and is a remake of a 20 year old game.
Not all jrpgs are like that. Go play draogn quest 11 and persona 5 to see get a guage on where jrpgs should be.
And you say theyre stuck in the 90s…actually it would be nice to have some of those games come back with better graphcis because the writig story and soul of those games exceed a lot of the modern jrpgs we get.
I recently played chrono cross and while it ran poorly and looked like an emulated ps1 game…the game had more charm and heart than most rpgs ive played in recent years.
We dont need jrpgs to be like wrpgs or visa versa. Elden ring is an action rpg doing its own thing. Its not stort driven.

Because those days you can dedicate more time on writingg because you needed less details in the graphics and so on. Now even a single line of text requires hours of texturing, rendering, coding etc.
Not to mention, elden ring, though japanese made, does not fit into the genre of a Japanese style RPG. JRPG does not mean an RPG made in Japan. That would be a useless genre.

I know they’re not everyone’s bag, but the last few Assassin’s Creed games have been visually stunning. I went back into Origins yesterday after the 60fps patch, and this five year old game surpasses most of what we see recently.

Origins is breath taking. No matter how anyone feels about the franchise, the one thing you can’t do is deny how incredible it is that we can explore Egypt or Greece in an AAA game.

No, the point is that in the past the time you needed to make a stage from the script was less than now. Nowadays, you need much more time to make a stage - better textures, lighting, more detailed environment. In the past you could write a poem and display it in 5 polygons 
Nowadays? Single house will take a lot of time.
I think many would argue that Souls has effectively defined the modern Japanese Action RPG.
Which is ironic because it’s more “western” feel.

Played this back when it launched. Completed it. 8.5/10 in my opinion. Great game. First ever JRPG that I have ever completed. Gameplay and combat system was excellent and what im hoping KOTOR Remake ends up being, visuals were for the most part excellent, soundtrack and voice acting was superb and the story/characters were good but should have been better since they lost me the last 3-5 hours.
