Oooooooh right. Are we really still taking that rumor from a cpl weeks back as legit? I mean, his source was confident in the timing and that didn’t pan out. Grubb also just seems to be going off what Greg/et al told him. /shrugs

I thought they were pretty vague on the timing? Either way both Grubb and Miller had multiple sources who said they knew someone in Sony who’d said there was a “big acquisition coming”, though Grubb did consider the whole thing too vague for him to have talked about if Miller hadn’t talked about it first. I mean it really could mean anything, “Sony will buy something above a mid sized development team in the near future” doesn’t tell us much. Still though, seems reasonable. It’s second hand but it seems pretty reliable so far as second hand goes.

Nah, Greg Miller thought it was happening that week. It was one of three reasons he pushed his podcast back.

I’m sure it was more that he thought it COULD happen that week, but the way it described it left a lot of wiggle room on that.

It will be coming up on a month since those rumors and the delay of that podcast, as Sony Spartacus revealed that Tuesday on 2022-03-29. Everyone else wanting to believe the rumors keeps making adjustments on timings and pushing out further and further. They simply don’t want to face that the rumor fizzled out entirely.

All of these rumors leave a lot of wiggle room, for good reason :stuck_out_tongue:

Sony has already said they will continue acquiring, they’ll be right at some point.

True. I looked up a transcript I remember seeing of Greg Miller and Jeff Grubb discussing it on a podcast the week the whole thing blew up. Just for some clarity.

Greg Miller:

The third thing I heard over the weekend was rumours and this is one of those really shitty one because it could be true next week, it could be true in a month and half, it could be. Whatever. I don’t know. Acquisition, and I had heard that from multiple people that there’s a Sony acquisition in the works coming up soon.

Jeff Grubb:

The acquisition one is very difficult as it’s a difficult one to pin down. People can get word on that stuff, but the people who usually know are usually legally bound not to say anything so we’re probably getting second hand information at best. I’ve heard it’s big.

Greg Miller:

Yes, so we’re sharing information here. I’ve heard from two separate sources, and one of those sources being a pool of people that it’s big. It’s really big. So I’m like alright I’m going to delay the show, put it out there and see if it happens this week. Then again it could be completely fucking nothing because of like what you’re saying. Think of every acquisition that came before, did we have rumours? No because it’s fucking insider trading garbage to worry about.

Jeff Grubb:

You’re right. Im hearing it from multiple people too and they’re like no somebody from Sony says this is going to happen and I’m like oh well is it this thing and they’re like I don’t know that. I’m not going to write a story about this on GamesBeat, that’s where I’m at like this is not going to be a story where I put my name to a byline and say any of these things are actually going to come together, but I do get wanting to share this stuff with people because it’s exciting.

Yep Ubisoft is not just bigger but in a different league completely.

  • 80 employees vs 20,000.
  • 1 IP vs Countless.
  • 1 Studio vs 53 Studios

Also Ubisoft normally have 2-3 games in the top selling games every year!

Ubisoft would be a really risky purchase for someone that needs a guranteed return like Sony.

Within the next 2-3 weeks we will know if Sony acquired somebody or not anyway.

Why, because of earnings?

Yeah someone posted Ubisofts profits and wow if accurate their margins are much tighter than I would have expected. I’d guess exclusivity is going to be a tough sell for either Sony or Microsoft when it means cutting even further into those margins. That said - Ubisofts big problem seems to be the massive number of staff they need (spread across a range of support studios) to keep making massive games with. Scale back the games to a more managable size and that is a support structure ready to make use of. THAT could be worth it for someone.

Yes. We don’t know why they have delayed earnings. If something is gonna happen soon - it will happen within the remaining 2 weeks. Everything else can happen whenever.

Ubisoft is possibly not on Sony’s eyes because the acquisition cost would likely eat the blow up the whole budget they had for acquisitions in the two-tree year span, and for all I remember it was for the whole company not just Playstation. Also Ubisoft is known for very loose lips, all of their games get leaked months to years ahead, so its likely that its private equity firms who are the interest parties.

What a week it will be.
