XboxEra Community Hangout |OT6| New Year, Same Three Topics

The Twitter app is total crap now.

Found out it’s crossplay with PC. That makes it easier for me and my friends. It’s free, so it won’t hurt to try.

So far to me the optimization problems seems to be continued support for last gen - takes away resources that could be used for Series X|S ps5, with studios still updating there engines to work with the current tools sets and maybe a slow adoption/move to dx12 than any other dev environment than before(at least that’s what it feels like whenever I see a video where a game runs better in dx11 than dx12, granted it’s been a while now.)

Then we have companies like Nvidia doing proprietary tech that they won’t allow any other gpus to use, which I think fragments the implementation of features further in my opinion.

On Xbox? Or just in general?

all Blizzard IP have immense transmedia potential. Like Blizzard cinematics are known to be industry leading, and the Diablo 4 trailer is possibly the best one I’ve seen in years. OW show like Arcane would be great

It would be cool if they gave each Overwatch character thier own spin off thats in a different genre. Expand the worlds and tell us more about these characters

Patches coming out is due to the games not being ready to launch properly. I mean how many Day 1 patches do we have these days? Why can’t they just delay the game and make it go gold with Day 1 patch already? Not to mention the games sometimes have to support Xbox One / PS4 too.

Critisized by whom? It would be a handheld so people would not expect it to run on the same level of standalone console. Or critisized like that guy from Techland that said that Dying Light 2 was running the way it was because Series S was weak, but now with patches it runs better. So either Series S was upgraded while nobody was watching or they just optimized the game properly.

Why?

By devs and media themselves

Optimising a games properly require time and that may create problem for Devs… There is nothing to argue on this… A third SKU is more work for Devs and they may or may not want or budget to do it

What I can tell is that if the supposed handheld could sell like the Nintendo switch then every game publisher will optimise the game first for that handheld. But it’s risky to launch such a product with such expectations.

Also, dying light 2 reaches 720p to do 60fps

What would the handheld run at? 480p? Is that viable for you?

This is a heavy subject but after seeing these Tweets from Gene Park I want to spread the message

There is absolutely still remnants of that late 2000s-early 2010s era when Western developers/journalists openly shat on Japanese games. Talking stuff like this.

The saddest thing is back in the day this behavior was accepted and even kind of encouraged.

And surprise surprise, this shit hasn’t gone away. There are DEVELOPERS out here trying to say the same shit about Elden Ring. ā€œThis needs to be more like Western games.ā€

(This one is especially boiling my blood. So fucking nitpicky, you have to go to the equipment tab to change equipment. Wow, clearly Japanese game design has a big problem here. Would you have this nitpick if the game was Western I wonder?)

I start fucking fuming when I see a review or critique of a Japanese game and they start using the words ā€œJapaneseā€ or ā€œanimeā€ as a negative connotation. Worst thing is reading a JRPG review and reading ā€œThis is why I don’t like JRPGs/This is what puts me off from JRPGs.ā€

Of course I am not saying ALL people on the Western side of the gaming industry are like this, far from it, those good reviews came from the West. But there is absolutely still a section of this side of the industry who are BOTHERED by a Japanese game being a massive success.

Elden Ring is simply a deconstruction of almost every other western open world game, and it works flawlessly.

They’re terrified that they’ll have to think of new ways to design their open world instead of just copy-pasting every tired feature in a new cookie cutter landscape. Someone came into the industry and is demanding a change for the best from their peers, some can’t and won’t stand up for the challenge.

Some of these devs don’t seem to even like videogames, I don’t think some games are for me, but even I can understand and recognize the genius of the design even if I don’t play it.

Phil Fish was right :woman_shrugging:

How to make a hit game like Elden Ring

  1. Put gameplay above everything else

  2. Design your world to complement gameplay

  3. Choose visual fidelity to complement your gameplay

  4. Hype your game promotion to complement your gameplay

Tl:dr- Gameplay is king

Only Ubisoft style games (and Horizon by extension).

I can see why Park is mad,. Though I will say, as someone who happens to not be the biggest fan of a lot of games and anime from Japan. I can’t help but acknowledge that the things I don’t like about them tend to be so similar to each other it’s hard to not see it as a certain style

And while I certainly don’t put From games in that category, as they’re so unique to most anything regardless of where they’re made, it would be hard to not do that with a lot of other games from Japan, especially RPGs. I mean I’m sorry, but it’s impossible to deny the striking similarities to the art style, character design, narrative structures, story themes, combat style etc of so many of these franchise

And I think that may be why Park chose this occasion to speak out about this. Elden Ring/Souls games helps his argument a lot more than if this was Tales of Arise, Scarlet Nexus, Fire Emblem etc. That said the comparisons/generalizations can be taken too far. And how people choose to verbalize their critiques still matters. People can have certain biases that get out of control. It certainly happens with entertainment entities that come out of the U.S, Great Britain, France, India, etc. But I’m not looking to pull some what-about-ism crap here

Point is things from certain regions can tend to be rather similarly structured. And if you don’t happen to be a fan of some, I get it. But don’t be such an obnoxious prick about how you go about it and word things. That said I feel Park is being a little opportunistic and virtue signaly as well

Most open world games do Ubisoft style stuff, Bethesda and Fromsoftware are one of the few that escape this template.

Phil Fish was a dick and this was a shitty thing to say (which also made the dude who asked the question really uncomfortable) and generalizing is shitty from any way that comes. Great games are just great games and I’d like to think that (as @Shakez already said) we can still appreciate and recognize quality games wherever they come from.

Also wtf at that Gies tweet about Vanquishā€¦ā€œrepetitiveā€, ā€œclunkyā€ and ā€œvery japaneseā€. :confused_wat:

Well Elden Ring uses the approach similar to BGS games, where you can create your own journey (except it is more story driven in that regard)

Back in 2010 it was a common thing to do because most of the early 7th gen japanese games flopped and pretty much the reason why Xbox dropped out Japan, a massive miscommunication and sparks of rudeness in the industry.

The irony is that people involved with games such as BF2042 who has massive UI complaints thinking that the people are hypocrites and not realizing that their studios are at the lowest point where even a game like Elden ring who is another iteration has brought in major quality rather than a quick cash in iteration.

Notice: I don’t think Ubisoft do shit games, they are just good, but that’s a far cry (no pun intended) of what was their highest point and they have been on a zero effort to give a fresh perspective over these concepts, you don’t need to change, you need to improve it.
