The thing is that for a lot of people single player games are third person action cinematic games. And it is not surprising to be honest. With Sony’s mind share and them producing award winning games relatively regularly and most of their games are third person single player games, a lot of folks want such type of the games on their platforms. And exclusive games, not third party and specifically not “shared world” or co-op games. Ideally people also want to see great graphics (naturally). Nothing wrong with wanting a breathtaking single player game that designed and requires a single person to complete it. And so far I believe only Compulsion’s game that does not involve any co-op or shared world or online elements, while being a third person.
I personally want Xbox to have exclusive JRPGs and third person single player no co-op games. Nothing wrong with that and no reason to be defensive (“hey Xbox has RPGS!!”). Even if I prefer WRPGs. Though Xbox historically has a reputation of mainly FPS/multiplayer platform. Hope Game Pass fixes that as they will have to produce diverse content (yet anecdotally Game Pass encourages co-op).
P.S. these conversations devolve into arguing over type of gameplay and so on, so they are not really productive anyway.
I’ll admit, I find it a little off putting (and I know I shouldn’t) how quickly some people are willing to write a game off because it’s perspective or because a game can be played with others. Its like people write games off before we’ve even seen them.
I play single player games almost exclusively, but I’m looking forward to more information on Redfall and Contraband. I gave Fallout 76 a try because it’s on Game Pass, it feels like Fallout. MMO appear to be moving in a way that they are enjoyable as solo players, so I’m looking forward to learning more about what is coming from Mainframe and Zenimax Online.
I dunno, I guess people know what they like but things don’t always fit nicely into boxes and one of the benefits of a service like Game Pass is you can actually try things that fall outside of your traditional comfort zone. Never in a million years would I have bought a isometric RPG, but I had the time of my life with Wasteland 3.
Well, until a certain point (either dungeons or end game content) MMOs don’t require co-op and with internet access everywhere you literally playing MMOs like a single player game. Though from time to time raiding dungeons in mid-game requires a team, there is a difference between doing it from time to time, to dealing with a team on regular basis.
For example, for me co-op games are not interesting even with AIs simply because in co-op designed game, you simply have no trust in AI making a human-like decisions. It can and it will create a dangerous situation for the player, it will behave erratically. Unless the combat in the game has a tube design (I don’t know how it’s called, but basically the team has always a linear direction of movement (corridors, bridges and so on), it is always a mess.
Each and every game with companions is a headache if they need to do more than just move from one point of another with no doors in sight.
So does that mean games like The Outer Worlds where you have companions are also a turn off? It’s funny because I was just playing that and got to the end of a quest and my companions killed off the person that finishes the quest while I was shooting robots. Didn’t even know until I saw their corpse lol.
Did not play The Outer Worlds myself but I presume it is a game designed for solo first and foremost. Your companions are just the followers that are always a headache in all of these games (from TES to any other). They sometimes even require modding community to fix them lol.
For some reasons CRPGs have good companion design, but I presume that’s because the traversing in the isometric space and combat design is easier to do.
If time was a free real estate, I would agree with “try more games”.
Though the way we consume content will eventually change and the games will be mostly designed around shorter sessions and seasonal content in a shared world or some online elements. Making the worlds from scratch is just too expensive.
Can’t speak for others of course but I’m not writing games off, that’s impossible without having seen a second of gameplay yet and I too am looking forward to Redfall, because I appreciate Arkane a lot and from them I expect great things. Not overly fond of Avalanche, but am curious about Contraband and what it will be like.
But what Bastian said, that’s exactly how I feel too. I’d like to see today’s Xbox give some bigger budget SP games a shot. SO was awesome, all the way but Recore indeed could have used more time in the oven and it seems the Xbox of now is more willing to do that. Take for example that Black Myth Wukong game, go after that and try to get it either exclusive, timed or at least have the marketing rights for it. The stuff that looks truly like a huge step forward in every way, I’d like to see that from XGP.
A balance between MP and SP games from XGP, I see nothing wrong with having that wish.
I don’t disagree with you at all. Just gets a little frustrating to see people instantly down on every little piece of information we get, even when it’s not even enough to make a decision on.
I get what you mean, but with some of XGSP’s games, it isn’t 100% clear just how single-player/multi-player oriented they will be. So in that case I think people should reserve judgment until we get a proper trailer or description of what the games will be like. After official details are shown, it’s completely fine if people decide it’s not for them, but I just think people should give these games a chance, at the very least, especially when there isn’t any official information just yet.
We really just need to see Hellblade 2, Fable be single-player oriented, Compulsion’s game, and either Perfect Dark or Indiana Jones and I believe everyone should be a bit more relaxed here lol
Hope not, if anything let it be multiplatform please. I think they said next gen consoles, but I guess that doesn’t exclude the possibility that Sony goes for a deal. This is one of the few games of which the trailer had me drop my jaw, the animations, the details, how lively it all looked, combat looks great and visually overall it’s truly next gen. I’d love to see this featured during a Xbox show.
Xbox keeps getting more and more Asian games, they recently got Xuan Yuan Sword 7 and it could easily have been a PS only game.
