This is honestly a rather dumb opinion coming from Doc, I must admit. This is the kind of shit you’d hear from some fanboys, not a developer.
Coalition was similarly created for Gears only, yet there is some rumblings they might be working on something new that’s non-Gears even if it’s smaller in scope. Should Microsoft disband Coalition because of that?
343 is a little different in that Halo is an IP that goes beyond gaming and 343’s job is managing everything related to that IP. I don’t think it’s a fanboy take to say that they should remain working on Halo as long as Halo is still a thing at Xbox. What’s the issue with the take?
If there are employees that want to work on something different, I am sure it’s pretty easy to transfer to a different studio within XGS.
I got one final reply about Redfall before he deleted:
Access to the test required a GTX 1080 minimum, 16GB RAM minimum, and 100GB of storage space available(install itself was around 88GB) I barely met the requirements and the game ran without any significant issues.
Well in that case the difference is that Gears isn’t as big in transmedia as Halo, doesn’t mean it can’t have it in the future. Would that not conflict with them trying to do small non gears stuff as well?
I get your point, but there might be several reasons why some devs at these studios could have certain grassroots ideas that they wanna realize while still remaining at 343. It can be company culture, pipeline, whatever. I’m not saying 343 should stop making halo. Thinking Grounded type experiments under Obsidian, but 343 tackling them.
It also makes a lot of sense because a lot of us know these developers are super talented, but are tied down by these massive IP that are sooooo goddamn restrictive in what can be done with it. Imagine if 343 could make a shooter that’s not halo. Suddenly all the baggage that comes with the halo IP is completely absent. Or it doesn’t even need to be a shooter.
Same as Coalition. They are Unreal wizards, yet all they’ve done is Gears and that franchise feels so stagnated right now because of averse the fanbase is to evolving it in ways that might piss off its longstanding fans.
That’s what I mean. 343 can have a small team if they wanted to try something non halo, without just needing to leave that company for it.
But ultimately I get it. It still felt dumb to me to say 343 simply cannot do anything else, otherwise they should be disbanded
I would imagine if someone applies for a job at 343, they want to work on Halo. I go with the route that there are enough different studios at Xbox you could make different games if you wanted to.
Again, what if it’s a small team of people who have been at 343 for a long time now?
Like Grounded team is around 10 to 12 people or something. Obsidian isn’t hiring for Grounded, yet that game was greenlit. Those two aspects aren’t incompatible.
@Ruthwik_Rao Id like to see 343 do something different one day as you said. Not even Sony does this with Santa Monica, Naughty Dog or Guerilla and we are getting rumors of Coalition doing something non Gears on the xbox side.
I think its something that can help that team make something different and not be bogged down by the IP’s. This is ironic cause we had discussions about Licensed properties being restrictive and I cant think of more adverse to change franchises than Gears and Halo in the xbox franchise
I searched for some games and Borderlands 3 is UE, Arkham City is, Hellblade is, Fortnite etc. Surprised me that very few open world games seem to be in UE.
Halo should be treated like Star Wars, different type of games in the Halo universe (Shooters, RPGs, Action Adventure, Horror ect…). Add 2-3 teams to 343i and let them be the Halo factory.
As long as Halo doesn’t get left behind they can do whatever they like. But at least keep Halo going. When Infinite drops no one here will want to miss it again.
