Just a side rant -

Why is Geoff Keighley being treated like the Academy, I wonder.

There are surely better and higher quality awards - DICE awards and Bafta. The Oscars are run by a legit org in AMPAS, whereas with gaming a well known entrepreneur setting up random categories seems to be acceptable to many, as long as they are in the running. Even Steam awards have better categories.

There was a category last year for sim/strategy. :man_facepalming:

I hope someone has the courage to set up an AMPAS like association for gaming.

Yeah. I really wish they let it cook a bit longer. I would have waited for it , even with all it’s flaws is still one of my favorite games. Really is a shame!

I know DLSS is getting all the attention atm when it comes to the application of ML hardware but it is actually one of the more mundane uses of it and there are far more exciting possibilities out there that can have a fundamental impact on the games we play.

For me I really liked Ratchet and Clank when playing it for the first time on PS+ recently, easily between an 8 and 9 for me. But this sure looks like more of the same with a little extra shine, so I can wait for this one until I can get it on sale for much cheaper given how much I have to play on Game Pass and with Valhalla DLC etc. going forward.

While much of this is true, I do gotta give it to Sony that most of their exclusives are polished on day one, are of very high quality production wise and are often quite good. With studios like Insomniac, ND, Sucker Punch, SSM you just know something good is going to come. TLOU2 is a quality game, if it wasn’t for some questionable and just bad story and character decisions it would have been superb in my opinion.

The kind of polish and high production is what I really hope to see from Xbox moving forward. Studios that are not TC, PG (FH studio), Turn10 and to an extent 343. I have no doubts Fable is going to be a looker and should be quite polished, ever since PG came with the FH games it has been very polished products. But I am hoping Avowed will be polished and a looker too, inXile RPG, and so on.

With the Bethesda studios like ID, Arkane etc I think they are in a pretty good position. I just really hope Arkane, ID and Tango will keep doing what they do best, making SP focused games. But that’s an entirely different thing.

I agree, but that should not be the bar that XGS aspires towards.

There is only one king of the hill in terms of pure quality, an eye for extreme polish and just breathtaking scope – Rockstar.

Aim to surpass or even be at par with Rockstar in both scope, polish, QA, and general longevity of a title – and I think XGS/Beth should be ok.

Talking about Playstation studios makes for interesting light reading, but they are all built off the Uncharted formula that they started with the PS3 gen. That helped them in the PS4 gen, and is still helping them now.

Xbox in the past had the dna of being revolutionary in adopting interesting new tech, gameplay, and new experiences. I hope they rekindle that and extend it to not just diversity in gameplay experiences, but also sheer innovation and invention. This undoubtedly means that they will need multiple ā€˜formulae’ rather than sticking to only one template like how PSS do.

I am counting on the fact that XGS/Beth know this too.

in production quality, I agree, they’re simply unparalleled, but in game design, far from it. And it’s not so much that they are bad game makers, but as NakeyJakey put it in his video on RDR2, their philosophy of design has devolved over time. Their sandbox roots are almost dead now.

Focusing on one or two IP and milking them to death has also made them extremely risk averse, and releasing fewer and fewer games over time, down to literally one game per entire generation now.

I suspect and hope that’s changing this coming gen.

I agree with your opinion about their game design 1000%

This is so relatable. Since Xbox started announcing games coming, FPS boost, expanding the type of games in Gamepass etc I haven’t given PS5 a thought. The money I set aside for one went on the new wireless headset, another controller, some peripherals to improve playing remotely on my phone etc. Xbox has successfully made itself my one-stop-shop. I’m not paying Ā£500 to play God Of War for eight hours

in what way do you mean? They’ve been releasing game after game for the past year, their pipeline was heavily adjusted to the launch year, they released a game a few weeks ago, and are releasing a new one next month, all despite Covid. I’d say they’re doing pretty great.

Xbox on the other hand was simply way too late in investing in first party and could afford not having any new first party game at launch cuz Halo fucked up bad with the reveal and covid meant even that couldn’t be rushed anymore but it what it is, once they start from late 2021 onwards, the drought will be over for good. They’ve been selling the services and QoL upgrades a lot in the meanwhile and that’s great, but Sony is keeping up great as well, I have no qualms.

also not a fan of how the demo is there for xbox consoles only but not PC, why not one through Windows store as well? This one foot still in the plastic box paradigm is a bit weird but oh well.

Just imagine the proposition, getting your game marketed by PS5 means only on their plastic box, but if xbox does it, it can be on both PC and xbox consoles as per their ecosystem.

Xbox’s vision of unification of Console and PC still has ways to go and this is one way it needs to imo.

I have this feeling Psychonauts 2 will be something special, the 3D platformer that Xbox really needs. Sure we have Super Lucky and it’s fun, but it isn’t the quality of BK or things that DF makes. But their next project will be MP? I can’t help but find that a bummer. Stick to what you do best, platforming, adventure games and things like The Cave. Of course if it’s their vision and they want to take on MP…

I have a better idea, the money that went to moneyhat Scarlet Nexus demo could have been increased hundredfold to get Elden Ring on gamepass day 1 :philwins:

Speaking of that game…

Dude at Game Informer calls it his most anticipated game this year after he played it.

hells yeah! I haven’t even needed to play it for it to be my most anticipated so guess I’m ahead of him lol

Well, the combat looks awesome but the baddies I don’t like. I don’t dig the enemy design at all. Weird plant like creature things, lol. But that’s just one small thing really.

oh lol you’re referring to Scarlett Nexus or Elden Ring? lolol I was referring to the latter, my bad.

Scarlett looks fine to me, but yeah not even in the same league as ER

It makes sense now, the only person who’s played Elden Ring right now is Phil :philwins:

Aaaaah right. I bet the GI guy wished he had played ER. I think we all do, haha.

By 2023, I’m starting to think that a single E3-style showcase won’t be nearly enough to highlight every big announcement. Microsoft could really dominate the ā€œnew games narrativeā€ on a regular basis, starting in a couple of years. That’s before potentially adding new publishers and/or studios. Routine Nintendo Direct-like videos seems pretty likely by then.
