Well, it’s that day. Unless July is the new June, brace yourself.
Are they any showcases in the month of july to look out for other than Bandai Namco’s?
Announced, THQ and Bamco. We can expect more, rumored Nintendo as usual. We’ll see.
I think Fryer has a lot of great insight but being out of the industry is hurting some of her arguments in the latest video.
For example, talking about how XGS is having issues delivering games on time, which is far more true for some studios but not an issue with other studios. Exploring that disparity would have been far more valuable than making a blanket statement.
It is also an industry-wide problem, especially with the move to this current generation. A lot of wisdom could be shared as to why this is the case instead of attempting to claim that there is something specifically broken at XGS overall.
Her insinuation that the Xbox is light on games in the foreseeable future is completely false. That’s actually more so the case with the Nintendo and PlayStation at the moment. Neither company matches Microsoft in terms of investment into software development.
She’s right that the lack of exclusive software gives fewer reasons to buy particular hardware, but she doesn’t seem to understand the gaming habits of the modern gamer, as well as modern revenue streams. The whole reason for a walled garden is to make money from third party developers, as she would know. First party entices people to buy your units, which would in turn result in the purchase of third party games where these companies would make a 30% cut. Xbox lost out on all of that. They think they can never compete in that space again (I think she could make great arguments as to why they can). They’re replacing that revenue stream with Game Pass on their console and with game sales on every other machine.
I think her perspective represents a period of time that hasn’t yet come to grasp with the modern-day era. In her time things like live service games, microtransactions, and MAU were far more niche than they are now.
The gaming industry has grown by a factor of 3 times over the last 10 years. But console sales haven’t even doubled in that time span. We’ve only seen a 40% increase in PC gamers over the last 10 years, though it still remains the Holy Grail of traditional gaming platforms. Mobile gaming is incredibly huge and more and more people are playing traditional games on it like Roblox and Fortnite. So when she asks why someone would buy the ROG Xbox Ally X, none of this seems to factor in her analysis.
Also I think referring to her as “girl” is pretty insulting and dismissive because it’s essentially calling her a child. We wouldn’t say “boy” to refer to a notable industry veteran that is a male.
I’ll most definitely still watch her content. While I think she is off on this one topic in this one video, she still has a lot of fantastic experience and insight into the industry as it was a decade ago. There is validity in the idea that Xbox has changed from the startup mentality that fueled it in its early days to the corporate version that we see now, and she is in a good spot to demonstrate that contrast.
I also like to see generally informed criticism of Microsoft and Xbox, because that is incredibly rare to find in today’s YouTube landscape.
Unfortunately, her latest video seemed to disregard the modern gaming landscape and was viewed through the archaic hardware sales paradigm.
I saw some other videos that critiqued Microsoft’s branding and marketing in relation to this ROG device and I would completely agree with that. I think there is much to be said about this pivot in strategy and communicating that to the general audience. This new device only drives that point home.
Her videos are liked by the seedier parts of game discourse online for a reason. The ones she made around Concord/Dragon Age are full of dog whistles. I’m not a fan.
People despise Xbox. It was never about the exclusives or competition. They just want the brand to be dead.
Is there a tldw of that lady talking about Xbox?
- they don’t have exclusives, ded
- get a PC instead of the Xbox ally x (ignores that it too is a PC)
- in my day we cared about hardware
- play anywhere means you don’t need hardware!?!? ded
- dropping hardware to focus on game pass exclusively (makes no sense, as they need their platform/hardware for most of their GP subs)
- most of my other vids are full of right wing dog whistles, but ignore that because I’m saying what you want to hear, xbox ded!
I just looked up some of her other videos and watched a bit because of what you said and woooffff why are they paying attention to this grifter
Because it fits the narrative they want to spin… looks at the biggest gaming site…
Did they just add CoD WW2 to game pass? Because it’s showing up as the most recent game in the recently added section.
It was added today.
Agree completely.
Hoping the Xbox/PC hybrid console launches in Fall 2026 alongside Gears of War: E-Day, Halo CE remake, Forza Horizon 6, Fable and COD 2026. That would be fucking awesome!!!
Must have been added in between me playing Lost in Random: TED, or I just didn’t see it until I scrolled down.
I’m actually hoping for earlier rather than later as well. 2026 would be a good time for a new console from Xbox. If done and marketed properly, if Sony doesn’t come out until 2027 they could have the most powerful system to play GTA6 and COD for a whole year and if they go for an iterative system with 3rd party vendors releasing devices more often, you would never have a power difference with Playstation as your hardware would be keeping up on a yearly basis, just like phones.
It would make it hard to ‘‘report’’ sales in a way as there would be no more generations in a sense by doing this and I could already see the same bad actors going on about how MS is hiding numbers this way as it wouldn’t be able to directly compare to the competition, but I think it would be worth a try on MS’ end to differentiate themselves in the long run.
They could have an even bigger head start because everything I read and see points to a Fall 2028 release for PlayStation 6 but a year would be good too.
I can see third party manufacturers release different spec models at launch and then again, a few years later to always stay current with actual PC gaming.
One thing I wouldn’t mind seeing but doubt that it would happen would be if the hybrid console was even more like a PC to where you could swap out the CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD for newer versions which would make the console modular. This I think would be pretty cool because it’s up to the user if they want to upgrade the components or not and if so, which ones.
Of course, the actual UI and whatnot would still have to be streamlined and present ease of access as opposed to being complicated.
Microsoft has been done “competing” for almost a decade because their direction is different. They want to be everywhere and dominate every store front (this happening though remains to be seen) from within.
We’ll see what happens. I am very excited though because the idea of having my all in one console is something that I wanted since SNES/Genesis but realistically, never ever thought would be a possibility. With Microsoft’s next generation consoles, it not only seems possible but extremely likely.
It’s too bad it makes too much money to fail. The reason why they want them gone is because they’ll always be a threat to Sony by just staying in the industry. No one will ever admit that MS influenced the games industry more than they’ll admit. Microsoft is Sony’s Sword of Damocles, always hanging over their head.
I’m actually hoping that those AMD processors (wonder if they were talking exclusively CPUs here for the BC or if it meant APU) are available off the shelf so you can build your own system like you said. That way, you quite literally only need a PC to play everything (except Nintendo games I guess) and you decide how much you want to invest to make it as powerful as you want. If it’s an APU then I guess you are limited with what you can do. Although if it’d require AMD CPUs and GPUs for full compatibility, I’d be down for it anyway.
I do wonder about PS6 as 2028 seems late but then PS4 Pro was released 4 years prior to PS5 I think so I guess it’d make sense for PS6 to be 4 years after although I feel like an 8 year generation is quite a long time but maybe it is what’s necessary for huge computing gains.
Oh jeez I haven’t seen those but if it’s what I think it’s about..
Oh ok yeah just saw your other post, the dog whistlers are the worst
Is this forum starting to get really slow? As in less and less traffic?
