Early in the gen I went all out with the 120hz OLED TV and new sound system, and yet I find myself more and more on PC, playing a game on one screen and catching up on my TV shows and live streaming on the other screen as well as streaming myself from time to time. If I could play all of my BC titles as well I’d be in heaven, no need for another device and my daughters would probably be the ones using the consoles the most by then.
Series S on the used market is dirt cheap to be honest, it’s such a good buy if you can live with the 512GB storage space. I sometimes feel like getting a second one and keep it besides my PC just so I don’t have to change room when I want to use my console!

Literally what any of us with a brain could you have told you, but unfortunately we live in a timeline where facts and reality don’t matter because there are too many stupid people allowing themselves to be divided over the most inane things, while they’re robbed blind…
/rant, long day with the state of the world and when you have outlets out there actively running garbage like this, it’s just fucking absurd.

Well, I was giving her more credit than a bar that low (Dreamcast guy), but no. Over the years, I realise I had a very narrow focus in my own discipline. Take 10 people from the same studio over that time period, and you will get 10 different stories and opinions.
Another significant factor is that you become dated very quickly. I can tell you about the industry, but (triple AAA game models are not sustainable), some things will apply; however, a lot is still just opinion and very limited at that. Which is why I roll my eyes at ‘developer takes’. I think Tim Schaffer talked about this very thing too.

I also never hear a valid answer to what these people think would work instead.
It’s always a vague “everything exclusive” approach with cheap powerful consoles, that apparently:
- Will win back massive market share from PlayStation despite every poll (including many by the same publications!) showing many gamers are entrenched and won’t move
- Won’t trigger massive competition watchdog penalties
- Won’t cost Xbox tens of billions to do (but with no asset like a new publisher) - and if it did, daddy Microsoft will apparently write it off for years without consequence (forgetting they already did for many of the early years)
If there was a guaranteed winning strategy that would leave Xbox with say 70% market share, do these people not think the giant megacorp might have figured it out already?
And if it had, Microsoft would pump the money in short term in order to gain that share?
Gamers are pretty entrenched - I should know, I offered my partner an Xbox alongside their PS5 and was shot down, as their friends are pro-PlayStation (despite all having 360s, I’m guessing due to online influencer / media culture since) and they’ve limited time / HDMI ports lol, which I suspect is the same for many PS gamers even if they are more open minded…

Well, this is it. Today is the day. I guess today, the coin flip of good day or bad day will automatically land on bad. It’s still weird to have a “hype” countdown for layoff, but here we are. Whether it does happen today or not, know this, this news is inevitable.
What is all this about please, I’ve been out of the loop lately.
People like PlayStation cos they’ve regularly delivered good games and solid consoles, even with variable success and usual corp bullshit. It’s not surprising people like buying and playing on PS.
What this isn’t the same as, however, is YouTube-infected gaming discourse that has to have winners, losers, ‘relevance’ and ‘hype’. Completely fucking tiresome and it’ll never die, sadly.

A fairly unknown and long departed Xbox employee who has turned to making just-on-the-edge-of-grifty Youtube videos published something pretty generic and uninformed about Xbox’s strategic pivot for the last 2 years. A lot of websites had a slow news day and republished it uncritically without much research on her or the points she was making. As a result, its been a bunch of very silly statements and discourse divorced from reality in addition to the ongoing wild speculation about layoffs.

even if Microsoft was outselling PlayStation they would still need to pivot. PlayStation by itself is having to depend on PC and some of their games are on Xbox and Nintendo. It’s not also like they are selling out of shipped consoles as they have had to revise their numbers. We shall see just how well Death Stranding is doing as I doubt there has been any of their exclusives that has outsold Hell Divers at 12million.
