Officially in retail isn’t Series S and Digital Series X the only systems being made from now on?
Personally for me I want a disc drive, but only for my movies as 4K media is much better on disc than in streaming form and I doubt that’ll change any time soon considering how much bandwidth it’d take for them to push out the same video feed live.
When it comes to games, if MS were to still release on disc, then you’d probably end up paying the same price for a version that doesn’t come with Play Anywhere as the only way this works is by being linked to a digital version on the Xbox marketplace. You could put a code in the box but then you’d have people buying, redeeming the code, and then selling the physical copy so that really isn’t viable.
In the end the direction their platform is moving in (Windows based) it only makes sense to start transitioning people over and it is somewhat more consumer friendly for them considering their discs probably won’t be playable on the new systems in the future. It will also help keeping costs down for the new systems.
I do think they should still release a disc drive though for those that have huge collections and just charge a premium for it. That way you get the cheaper console price and accommodate those that need it.
Mine is they completely ignore how this has already happened with PC Gaming as well as Phones and Tablets. Could you imagine needing a physical media to launch apps or games on your phone? Me neither, nor can the entire market. That is what the new gamers are being raised on. The rest is a dying market, literally.
I’ll never quite understand how the same people can say “You’ll pry my physical discs from my cold dead hands” and then turn around and talk about how much they love Steam. Do they know that PC games used to come on physical discs too? Should someone tell them?
