As I’ve aged, I’ve grown weary of ranking things. It’s possible to enjoy multiple things without one being the absolute best.
Agreed, it feels like many of the awards are done purely for clicks, views and most importantly for some awards nominations / awards publishers can advertise their games with.
Oh and for Keighley’s million dollar advertising spots - poor guy has to make a living somehow.
Smaller sites or magazines doing rankings for their readers can be fun, particularly as many of them will give something to smaller games that can often deliver as big a gameplay or narrative punch as their AAA counterparts.
But the big ones seem mostly to exist to show how loyal they are to publishers known to bully anyone who gives them poor reviews (Sony and Nintendo have been notorious for it and other “throwing their weight around” things over the years) and to try and make games seem like blockbuster films.
Out of say my top 20/30 games of the last 5 years or so, over half are indie or AA games - but they won’t / didn’t get a look in as the judges don’t play them / don’t care / don’t get paid to consider them, despite some leaving much longer lasting impressions on me than many big games.
Many introduce innovative gameplay features (Viewpoint, Powerwash Simulator, House Flipper, etc.) while others deal with nuanced, grown up stories (even if in a fantastical way) that make you realise the impact of your decisions or highlight healthy choices like grieving and letting go rather than burning the world just to get back something you’ve lost (Banishers, Call of the Sea, Unpacking, Tell Me Why etc.).
But only when an AAA game from a big publisher steals the idea will we end up seeing it during awards season and feted…
Any day now!
Also all I see from the press about the PS5 Pro is flowers, rainbows and unicorns! everything is fine apparently! now imagine if MS released a mid-gen upgrade at 800e with no drive with similar problems…oh boy.
Yeah, the most annoying thing is almost no outlet can wait for the end of the year. Its like my supermarket where i can buy the Christmas chocolate and cookies on the first day of September, smh.
Yes, it can be a strain on your own enjoyment of things. You find many people after they finish something they don’t reflect on it or think about it, instead they focus on whether it’s gonna be GOTY or what number will it be on their top 10 list. I was like that for a while, and what I know is that I am enjoying gaming much more now that I’m not like that anymore.
I read this was going to be real-time combat, and i hoped that meant real-time with the ability to move around freely, like Tales games for example. It seems that’s not really the case. That’s a bummer.
Looking forward to this, it’s one of those series that eluded me and I was always too much of a series-completionist to just jump in… I guess now’s the time.

If true, I’ll be honest, why.
It’ll be over 10 years by the time it comes out if it is true.
That’s long enough for a remaster? Shrugs
Couple of things:
True, but now you made me feel old.
Can we like work on games that is 360 and below?
Did not receive X Enhanced, PC port is messy, also probably could be ported to Switch 2
It was in the last Rumour mill of our own Nick from the awesome Xbox Era podcast ! It feels like they don’t want to credit him.
Edit : my bad, he is credited in the article.
Fair enough. First one did get it, so I guess they want to justify it if they’re questioned, even though that would leave DS2 in the depth of ocean.
It’s in the article!
Tbf, DS3 has FPS Boost on XSX, and for me that’s the only worthwhile upgrade the game needs, as opposed to what’s guaranteed to be a half-assed remaster akin to DS Remastered and DS2’s remaster.
I’m at the point, after being spoiled by incredible remaster collections like MCC and Capcom Fighting Collection and/or great actual remakes a la RE2, where single-game barely-touched up remasters (akin to most Sony and pre-2017 Capcom remasters) hold absolutely no value to me.
Wait, 2 had a remaster? I’m so lost…
Sure did, was originally released on 360 and PS3, then a year or two later the XOne and PS4 received the Scholars of the First Sin remaster. I believe it ran at 60 while the originals were 30, and some other minor improvements.
Ok, yeah it’s in the article, my bad.
Oh yeah! I remember now!
Okay then. I guess the chance is pretty high.
