Is it really “console warring” to state the obvious though and call out the gaming press for how they operate? I mean we had press and Youtube personalities who were bringing this kind of thing up during the Xbox Game showcase , and we don’t see that sort of thing when it comes to Sony ever.
People have eyes and see things so expect them to call it out.
We did. Gonna give a not so subtle shot across the bow: this community has been infinitely more consistent on studio layoffs and closures, than any other forum I’m aware of, so for that commentator, don’t tone police.
It sucks that Sony shut down those studios but it’s not all that surprising. I do wonder if Haven survives if Fairgames flops and bombs like Concord did.
It’s wrong when they do it… Two wrongs don’t make a right…
-edit-
To clarify. Be upset and give Sony or any company as much flack because its there fault for giving no one studio second chances…
If your goal is to get even with outrage from another event because of it being unequal… You arnt doing it to grieve for the families that lost Jobs… You are wanting an eye for an eye.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me it has nothing to do with wanting an eye for an eye, it’s about wanting accountability from a section of the industry that seems to think these events are ok/understandable when one company does it, but an unforgivable sin when another does it. It’s hypocritical and helps to create and reinforce narratives that can affect people’s purchasing decisions. Essentially it’s aiding misinformation by omission.
Also, it’s not my job/responsibility to “grieve for the families”. I feel bad when I hear people have lost their jobs, but beyond that it’s not something I can do anything about and I highly doubt any of those people will come to XboxEra to see what Randy McRanderson #12 has to say about the situation.
It’s possible to be sad for the developers involved in any of these layoffs, while wishing the gaming media would treat them equally.
How is it fair to them that Arkane (for example) gets houls from the gaming media and a load of questions around E3, which helps to highlight the plight of Arkane workers and possibly to get them new jobs - while Sony seems to get a pass with a shrug by the same media and no questions in the media around their events?
It means Sony’s developers who are laid off are forgotten about pretty quickly and so may not get as many options - while the Xbox ones get a lot more attention but not for the right reasons, which at least can help them perhaps.
It’s a matter of opinion whether a layoff being forgotten quickly or not helps those it affects - I think it doesn’t as people are more likely to reach out with job offers if they read more about it, but I could see arguments the other way for the privacy of the developers.
Either way, all the layoffs should be treated equally - the developers deserve to have the same chances and offers, and by giving Sony a free pass they do the laid-off staff an injustice…
My post was aimed squarely at the gaming media because they should be held to a higher standard if they want to cover this hobby. It’s as simple as that.
I will just say this social media and the media reaction to all of this is so much different than Microsoft. I know what Microsoft did sucked, but people were sounding off about how Microsoft is awful for the industry and the worst company ever. Meanwhile with Sony it’s the gordon Ramsey meme . I will just say layoffs suck, but the bias towards Sony is clear because if it was the other way around people would be livid
True what’s bad is bad and should be treated as so. Giving one a pass doesn’t help but emboldens this sort of actions more in the future. I think it would be better if the media spent more energy on solutions.
Remember when Carrie Patel from Obsidian was asked to comment on layoffs at Tango? That was the most disingenuous bullshit ever. Can’t wait for the director of Astrobot or something to get grilled in the media about Firewalk closing.
