Look, I don’t want to say fire someone or anything. I just think IGN needs some rebranding for the sake of credibility because this year has been really rough on them. With Kotaku supposedly disappearing by changing its style, they’re basically them in front and center view.
I think they have this PS2 or even PS4 for that matter mindset, whereas it’s okay to release on that platform because it will do numbers and carry itself.
I think they’re just operating on an old mindset just like after the 360 generation most western developers were on the mindset Xbox was where it was and then it all flipped. Also, there might be more familiarity with Sony being a Japanese company.
It is quite something though as SE’s biggest IP could be done for. At this point devs or publishers skipping Xbox would probably want to make amends.
This situation is different. Rise of the Ronin is completely published by Sony, while Final Fantasy is always published by Square Enix and Sony only pays to not release it on other platforms. Koei Tecmo would have been entitled to a percentage of the sales of the game as the owner of Team Ninja, but by not selling as much as hoped, the company reduced the forecasts.
My thoughts as well, the thing is that is over from what we are seeing. There isn’t any single third party exclusive that has blown up from being exclusive to the Sony platform. Sony might have done well in selling consoles, but it hasn’t done well in getting players. It feels like the majority of players are on Xbox and PC while the casuals that go for the big franchises dominate the PlayStation.
Seeing as how Sony doesn’t own the RotR IP I think that it’s safe to assume that Sony didn’t fund the game, if that was the case then I bet you that Sony would want the IP rights (like they did with Bloodborne). Also it was KT’s choice to let Sony publish their game for what I guess exclusivity so it’s not that different than taking a moneyhat, also KT is not a small publisher by any means so this makes it even more dumb IMO. I guess they wanted that Sony 1st party hype and marketing and that’s why they probably went for this deal.
Ever since Itagaki left Tecmo has been 99% Sony partnership. I feel like he was the only or one of the few in that company championing Xbox development and when he left there was no one else to do the same. It’s a shame too. I thought with games like Wo Long and Wild Hearts we wouldn’t see too much more exclusives ( unless funded by Sony ) from Koei Tecmo.
Safe to assume they funded it, at least in part. Otherwise they wouldn’t be on as publisher. I also have some doubts on Koei Tecmo’s state when it comes to big budget games because the closest games they have to AAA games over the recent years have all been published by other companies (Rise of the Ronin with Sony, Wild Hearts as an EA Original). I suppose they did Wo Long themselves, but with a (who knows how big) Day 1 Game Pass deal.
Maybe I forgot but it seems like Nintendo start labeling/saying games to be “timed exclusive” depending on which. If this is the first, I wonder what got them doing this. I mean I’m not bringing conspiracy, but something that got me curious.
