I can totally see MS pushing even more with DX12, because there is still a lot of untapped potential with the Series X. Many features have yet to be used, so I can see MS encouraging devs to use them more. I would say a mid-gen refresh is not necessary, even more if MS is considering starting the next-gen earlier.

That’s one way to backtrack.

It’s disappointing that (going by what was said) Xbox won’t do a mid gen refresh, but if the rumors are true about 2026 for next gen, I guess it’s understandable. Now Spencer has talked about new hardware for the holiday and what not, and undoubtedly that’s the redesigned XSX, which clearly is NOT their answer to a Pro.

A PS console might become my main for the rest of the generation since a lifetime ago, which was PS2 I guess. Might only be two years, if next Xbox indeed is 2026.

I see what you’re getting at with DX12U and I hope you’re right, at least with the 1st party stuff. Honestly the best way to convince developers is for Microsoft to make their own games with DX12U to show off how great it could look. And they unfortunately haven’t due to various reasons.

A game like Flight Sim uses DX11, perhaps because it’s based on ForzaTech IIRC. Starfield started dev long ago. Halo Infinite had to work on the Xbox One.

UE5 under The Coalition and Ninja theory could potentially have some DX12U optimizations. But those optimizations would not be coming from Epic it would be coming from Microsoft under their own branch of the engine, so unless those changes are adopted in UE5 for everyone else you’re not going to see the benefits of it in third party games.

So to your point, I hope this is the year we’re seeing such titles. Indy and HB2 to start it off.

The thing is if you make a game with DX12U in mind from the ground up It would look incredible but only port-able to machines that support DX12U. I’m hoping now in 2024 that we’re at the point where most people have DX12U compliant video cards, but if MS ever wants to port their games to the PlayStation they can’t make a game ground up using the DX12U.

@Staffy It would be pretty genius on Xbox’s part to release a mid-gen refresh to coincide with the launch of GTA 6. So not this fall as PlayStation plans to, but next Spring.

But yeah, I think the rumours are true and honestly it solidifies the PS5 the default platform for most people who want to play 3rd party games. This is MS 's decision and we’ll have to see the wisdom in it.

The RT stuff in WD Legion, while impressive (first game I bought at launch and for that reason) barely compares to low RT settings on PC, as was shown on DF, even lower than low as it was a custom RT setting specifically made for consoles that mixed in RT and more traditional techniques, and from what I remember, even an RTX 2060 was outperforming both consoles.

If they release something new, I mean I’m guessing they are confident they can bring something that will impress or else no one will buy it. However, I’m wondering how many devs will actually use the hardware when almost no games are using RT right now.

The smart thing would be to add AI cores in some fashion and implement some kind of DLSS feature in the same way MS implemented auto HDR; console wide and automatically for all games. That would mean an uplift in graphical fidelity with 0 work from devs at the least.

And I also wonder, will MS announce something like they did with the Xbox One X in order to somewhat counter Sony’s upcoming Pro?

Spring 2026 surprise launch of a new Xbox would be amazing, assuming GTA 6 indeed drops then too. I am not willing to bet on that yet for GTA. And as for a new Xbox, even less so.

Well…50% I was kidding, 50% I was serious because where we are at right now, anything can happen. After all it was XboxEra with the Starfield article and well, never say never. A year ago we all would have (and did) ridiculed rumors about Xbox going third party and well…

I hope not though, Starfield should stay a Xbox/PC only title for a long time to go, preferably permanent.

The ā€œwisdomā€ is they re okay with selling Xboxes to the same people over and over again. The console market is not growing, okay, but they dont even want to fight for a bigger share.

If the PS5 Pro is indeed real and Xbox aint launching a mid-gen refresh, I really really hope, for the sake of Xbox consoles, that MS doesnt release any more games on PS (PS5 Pro with the best performance on Xbox games).

Xbox doesn’t need a mid gen refresh they already have it in the PC.

A PC to achieve that kind of uplift would be about twice the price of the Pro

It just sucks balls for those that don’t want to go near pc gaming ever again, for several reasons. PC gaming ain’t it for me.

2026 it is, hopefully.

DF is gonna have plenty of those videos and…folks will have a field day with those. It simply won’t be a good look at all. Now let’s wait for Sony to confirm it and let’s wait for that price.

The wisdom in it, is that mid gen consoles don’t sell much and they will certainly lose money on research and development on it. Most third party sales will come from the base consoles. I feel like I’m losing my mind here with reading posts like these. By sales PS5 is already the ā€œdefaultā€ console and this isn’t going to ā€œcementā€ anything. It’s an attempt by Sony to squeeze out more sales from PS5 which is lagging behind last gen and their projections from this gen.

Everytime Sony does something that MS doesn’t, you guys think MS is the dunce lol.

Yeah, you guys are gonna go on thinking I’m an Xbot or whatever, but I really wished people would be excited about what MS is doing and not wishing all the time they did the complete opposite.

I can’t speak for others but I AM excited about the promising second half of this year for Xbox, just disappointed after the awesome One X that they have decided against a mid gen refresh. Because when it comes to consoles (not PC, some would suggest going for PC, no I am going for consoles) I want my console of choice to be the best or at least on par. It remains to be seen what Pro truly will do, but if I know I’m gonna get Wukong with significantly better raytracing, graphics overall, perhaps fps too on a Pro compared to XSX, I reluctantly but surely will get it for that. Same goes for GTA 6 and many other titles.

I can absolutely understand others for being disappointed in this as well, since we have no clear vision on when next gen truly will start. If it’s 2026, I guess it’s not too bad. 2028…bad.

For me it wont matter because the real world difference is ā€œNO GamePassā€ vs ā€œGamePassā€. Thats the killer feature for me.

That’s for the Xbox first party games and here and there some bigger, older multiplatform games and indie titles. So for me the XSX will become the Game Pass console basically.

While the games that need to be bought like GTA, Wukong, and so on…I’ll get those for the Pro. I can’t justify for myself getting a inferior version if I own both systems. Next gen though, I fully expect to be back at Xbox 100% again. Unless PS5 manages to make me love their UI, etc, that…i doubt. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

:raising_hand_man: Me, I’m one of those people. I’m loving the direction of Xbox at the moment. There’s a few reasons for that.

  • They’re obviously all-in on gaming, ABK is more proof than anyone should need on that, which is a nice change after years of perceived uncertainty.

  • There seems to be a strong possibility that they’re looking to innovate/reinvent themselves in the portable space, which as someone heads-over-heel in love with my Ally I’m SO here for.

  • I’m still playing Starfield daily. That game alone makes me excited to be an Xbox gamer every single day. That excitement is sure to be turned up to 11 once Shattered Space launches later this year.

  • They seem to have hit a great cadence of shows through the year, with Developer_Direct, ID@Xbox, Summer Game Fest, The Game Awards. And in between all that, they’re continuously putting up great and informative content at Xbox Wire.

  • The line-up of first party titles this year is looking great, and Game Pass continues to be an absolutely fantastic service.

  • And even if I didn’t have all that, a quick glance at one of those Klobrille roadmap graphics is enough to make me chuffed for the future.

So, yeah, loving life as an Xbox gamer these days.

Lots of retro or ā€œain’t broke don’t fixā€ mindset over here.

I think an early next gen console could be enticing if they can get GTA 6 running on 60fps with high resolution. I think that could be a system mover imo. However, this gen as a whole feels disappointing due to how delayed everything was and how long cross-gen lasted. Anyway, I would be down for a next gen xbox in 2026 if it can run GTA 6 in 60 fps

Do not buy into this TF talks.

As per Rdna3 architecture, even PS5 will have 10.21*2= 20.42 TF.

It really is just 17-20TF machine.
