I don’t know anything about Gematsu other than them being the ones that said Kojima was working on Silent Hill, so I don’t really rate them very highly

If that’s true then Sony is about to have a scary bad couple of years, either way not looking too good. Though I don’t trust Sony insiders, especially era ones and I don’t know why people don’t learn.

It’s going to be weird to see PS being in third in profit in the next quarter since everything that feeds CoD feeds to Xbox.

This is all a testament to how well MS designed their strategy and their acquisitions, to be able to have so many diverse projects, big games, smaller games, GaaS or single-player, and still being able to make a big profit.

But what about all those startup companies where everyone came together for express purpose, desire, and drive to create GaaS games? Do they refocus to have more campaign focus? If so, that sounds like recipe for a lot of talent walking out the door – they signed up for one thing and ended up working on entirely something else.

Like you say, will be interesting to watch this play out.

They’re just like a Cleveland or Detroit sports team - “Next year!” as their reason to live.

Their GaaS side already achieved so many. You got sail adventure, racing, survival, battle royal (now), arena shooter (one that recovered greatly), and probably others that I’m missing. They can do nothing but single player games for all they want.

Well, one of them (Deviation) already had their game cancelled lol.

I’m sure they’ll move forward with some, but they basically had every first party studio working GaaS alongside their normal first player games. I would not be surprised if there were changes there. Just my theory though lol.

In some of our recent quieter years, starfield could have won, let alone just be nominated, but 2023 has been an unfathomably good year for gaming.

MS and Sony have opposite problems where MS has a lot of GAAS and to few SP games with high production value and Sony who does have SP with high production value but barely any GAAS

Microsoft has overcome their problem by acquiring a huge number of studios that will release single player games over the next few years.

Sony’s future line-up is a complete enigma tho. Not much to look forward to after this year’s Playstation Showcase.

CD is a studio I’d rather see go to Xbox, to be honest. They are already helping with Perfect Dark, and they are a studio making games that Xbox could definitely use. So if Embracer would end up selling CD and EM too, I hope Xbox will not let that just slip away easily.

Oh yes, for sure. This has been an amazing year. I mean if we solely look at scores a game like Hogwarts can easily be nominated for GOTY as well. If there can only be six picks, that’s not easy.

And Sony have a problem that their games are too similar, but for some reason no one will mention it.

Its cope.

Right… you can’t just “pivot” without hundreds of people leaving and potentially studios closing down.

Starting GaaS now is much more riskier than starting single-player now.

Also gotta remember that while the Keighley’s may be the biggest, they aren’t the only group giving out goty awards. I expect to see many different goty’s this year, because so many games are potentially deserving. It wouldn’t surprise me to see RE4 or Dead Space remakes be some smaller publications goty winners. Such a monumental year this has been.

The longer time goes on the harder it will be for new GaaS to be relevant and successful

Everyone can find the time for a new 10-20 hour single player game but people moving from one GaaS to another where they are expected to put 100s of hours into and spend money on MTX when they’re already invested in games like Warzone, Apex or Fortnite is tough

Then there’s the dev side of it, with a single player game, you make it and you move onto the next one but with GaaS, releasing the game is just the start and then you have to deal with the endless season updates, content and maintenance
