We’ll see because I do agree low barrier of entry might seem to work, but I feel if they go this route, then they should make their generations shorter than the traditional 6-8 years. I think they should go 5-6 year generation if that’s their plan because I don’t think it’s wise to have a series s type of console lasting for a 8 year generation.

Launch with a series s being as powerful as the default hardware and release a 700 to 800 box from the get go.

I always said ms shoukd have made the x an s at 500. Same poeer everything. Then a series z at 700.

You’re still wrong in the mix because you don’t have “Rumor” or any context that suggests as one. Context is everything.

Yeah, I like this idea of an uber powerful model and making the X the standard. I just hope they go with less confusing names because I think brand confusion is too strong with xbox’s hardware.

I think only issue with this idea is how many do they expect people to buy and will devs utilize that extra power since they’ll most likely focus on base since that will have more sales and PS6 will be similar power of the standard model

Someone is still salty.

What a Douche

I would bet that they will still talk about the X holding back development even if it’s more powerful than the PS6.

That’s the trouble of our society…

Releasing the S at the same price and power as the X would defeat the entire purpose of the S.

I know it’s difficult for people to understand, but the S was designed for people who do not spend as much time and money on gaming as we do. It was supposed to be an attractive entry point into next gen for people who either don’t have as much money to burn, or simply don’t have/need and/or can’t afford fancy 4K TVs.

Whether the strategy worked or will work remains to be seen, but I still believe it was a good strategy. Not everyone can afford $500+ machines and $1,000+ graphics cards.

I still like the idea of shorter generations with more cross gen, more in line with what you see with phones (except not yearly, like every 4 years). In a scenario like that, the ‘mid gen’ from the previous gen is effectively your Series S for the next gen… though it wouldn’t last the whole gen. Maybe only like half of it lol.

Steam Deck just scales differently! /s

All this talk about Series S holding the generation back for almost 3 years now and there are still no actual examples of what could be scaled back/sacrificed design wise. Still waiting for a developer to say anything concrete and not generic BS theories.

Most of the folks here or on tweeter who worry about Xbox Series S actually own xbox series X and have no reason to be worried about the matter in the first place.

Another thing is the Series S is a static piece of hardware that they know the specs of and how everything works, once you move to PC there is literally a million different combinations and billions if you want to start comparing ram speed and stuff like that.

It’s more work than using 1 device sure, but if Microsoft didn’t launch the Series S they would be further behind and people who are casual wouldn’t jump into gaming. Why is it these devs never think about the actual end user and how some people can’t afford high end consoles, fuck them? They’ll literally sell less games lol.

Hmm, I see. Yeah I guess even devs and people working for a studio can be fanboys too. Has he done this before?

The worry is mostly that it would hold things back, the potential of certain games. But so far we haven’t seen any of that. OK I guess whatever Larian’s problem with S is kinda is holding it back from releasing for at least XSX. But I recall Larian themselves confirming S is not holding games back in general.

I also recall several indie developers coming to the defense of S. Have bigger devs spoken on S too before? The one reason for me to be not so happy with S is that MS might skip on a mid gen refresh because XSX and S are enough as it is. But if this generation is going to last until 2028, it could start to pose a problem.

Exactly. Devs whine on Twitter about Series S but hype up their Steam Deck compatibility. Next year they will port to Switch 2 and you will hear crickets.

What potential is beeing held back? Name it.

Yeah, I would prefer 5-6 year gens instead of the 7-8 year gens we’ve seen to be getting .

So long as the PS4 continues to be supported I will continue to dismiss complaints about the S.

For me the worry would be (isn’t perse because we haven’t seen any proof of it, look at Starfield, that certainly isn’t being held back) if a game is “dumbed down” similarly to Shadow of Mordor years ago because it has to take the weaker hardware into account. But again,…i haven’t seen it. What I said was mostly based on what I’ve seen in comments.

MS might have been further behind, but maybe they could have given the X a price cut sooner in that case, making people buy Xbox more , but if not, Starfield probably would have been the big XSX seller. But that’s all speculation of course.

They made perfectly good games with great ambitions and impressive presentations on PS4 as a baseline, but targeting the S, which is faster and more powerful in every way than the PS4, is giving them issues? Not even later but this early in the gen?

Did something change between the generations or what? because games are performing worse without any meaningful of noticable differences, and we have devs saying “this is next-gen exclusive for these reasons” and then they release it on last-gen, and Steam Deck. Can they at least elaborate? We’re not idiots we can understand stuff if you elaborate on them. Shit just doesn’t make sense
