Xbox multi platform discussion

And what everyone has been telling you, and the data has proven as such: the old ways simply don’t work, and that obviously doesn’t just apply to Xbox as we see Sony following suit. When you consider the global economic crises (name me a single mature industry that isn’t suffering right now as general consumer spending is down - just look at the auto industry), the changing demographics of the gaming audience, and all the other factors, we can’t go back to “new console every five years” and expect people - gamers and devs, who are already stretched to the bone - to be happy.

When you consider everything going on right now, and the general struggle most have to simply pay their bills, I fail to see how this is an actual problem that people like you are clearly losing sleep over…

Playstation have been winning though, no? Yet, even Insomniac, SSM, and ND had to cut staff last year. The industry clearly needs to move on from the traditional model.

Yeah, it’s over. All games going forward is multiplat and succesful games will get ported over. I don’t think they will port motorsport because it didn’t move that many units and reviews were just okay

I think the main issue about this the podcast thing they did this time last year was all BS. It was never just 4, but it was 4 for now due to they had those ports ready. I wish they can be upfront with their plans because there’s no way current console are in good shape for growth and same with next gen. They have to do something outside the box because current value proposition for xbox ain’t there. I like gamepass, but not enough to spend $500+ console + $20+ month to sub. I am okay with buying games because not every game is for me.

I know many in here will disagree, but they need to tell their current customers what are their plans. I feel there is too much doubt and when you start to sit down and think. We’re going to see them priortize development for Playstation over xbox because 65m+ users vs 30m+ users. So, they might work harder on Playstation ports because I wouldn’t be shocked to see games perform better on Playstation tbh.

Anyway, i have gamepass until Nov 2027, but I don’t feel much confidence in the brand. I think Microsoft needs to let us know their plans before another exodus happens because install base shrinks every gen and these moves are most likely happening due to series console failed to grow compared to other consoles

The fact of the matter is, they sold a console on exclusives and just ported their legacy over for short run pennies. This will devalue their ecosystem (as the recent earnings report does show), unless and until they merge with PC - Xbox fans will lose more and more games due to lessening market relevance and significant moneyhats from Sony, next gen will be more expensive than ever with lessened price competition and our investments are as of right now not guaranteed or safe (even Play Anywhere is touch and go - whose to say they continue to invest in the PC store?). This is the rubicon you do not cross unless you want to become SEGA.

MS can try and fix this, try and save their ecosystem, but their messaging is misaligned with reality. If everything is an Xbox, nothing is. And the reality still holds with what Phil said, and I must reiterate, under oath:

Anyways, it’s been a gas. All the best to you magnificent lot, I wish the site team the very best in continuing to grow the community, I hope in due time I will be proven wrong on the future of this ecosystem and hobby, and if this hobby continues to bring you join - don’t let my miserly viewpoint bring ya down, but if you feel as I do at least I can say you’re not alone in your reticence.

the funny thing, when they announce june event, we gonna see the same people saying they give up xbox, hyping another time, hypocrisy never ends

It’s the same exact response by the usual suspects any time another game or change occurs. I just can’t be bothered with the childish entitlement anymore with the world on fire…

If only someone asked Phil about that 30% quote, hmm.

For completeness, the News announcement thread based off the Forza website:

something that doesnt get talked about enough in all these “console wars” and xbox “gave up” talk etc, is that the market has spoken and it does not have the capacity for a 3rd console. PS5 is the de-facto “high end” console, Nintendo has the lower power/handheld (boosted by the power of its IP) and since the days of PC being shit in the 2000s Steam has basically taken over and PC gaming is as big as ever. Very few in this economy where people could hardly afford rent, medical bills or food on the table is going to buy an Xbox as their 3rd console/4th platform behind PC - xbox are making the necessary pivot.

The basis and strategy of dominating desktop hardware. A mission they are achieving with ease. Why give Xbox a chance to compete if Sony can have the largest base on its console?

Earning 30% of all games and microtransactions, in addition to payment for its services. Outside the bubble, the movement of abandoning Xbox by the vast majority of the community is clear and the increasingly worse numbers only confirm this. Why would Sony put games on an increasingly smaller base if it can have practically no competition? It wouldn’t make sense.

The market isn’t changing, only Microsoft is. Sony doesn’t even work on PC day one, Nintendo is even further away. Don’t get the illusion that the two will change just because Microsoft gave up on a format.

I think its fair to have genuine concerns on this strategy given MS have changed messaging that much over the last year. So they say there’s new hardware coming but they’ve said a lot of things and changed thier minds when some data suggests otherwise. It is a totally different market to what its ever been and I think some consumers will see less value in MS hardware as they just ain’t interested in subscriptions. Its leap into the unknown and I’d like nothing better than a world without exclusives. At the same time I like local hardware to play it on and just see this move as a sign they want to drop it as it’s not making enough revenue and stick with publishing. Call me a cynic but I lived the loss of SEGA consoles ha ha. I think we should allow peoples concerns when genuine and not just dismiss them.

The problem is while many don’t like people being angry it’s a lot better than people showing apathy towards the brand.

Literally nobody is doing this; there’s a stark contrast between not allowing dissension (I have literally hundreds of posts proving we don’t dissuade people from doing so) and being tired of the same five users regurgitating the same doomposting every other day. We already got it last year, people clearly are tired of hearing the same thing… that’s part of being a community, realizing how to interact…

I am fascinated to see if we do end up with Steam on the next Xbox. We saw talk about how the data didnt suggest aggresive churn by the decision to port games to Playstation, but a reasonable assumption would be that the games that went to date were either quite “small” in terms of being core Xbox franchises, or the gap in time to properly judge is just too narrow.

I don’t mind too much the fact these games are going to other platforms. However I do have reservations for the future if Xbox doesnt get some kind of access to 3rd party stores on their next device. I dont think the “ecosystem” / gamepass is compelling enough to persuade users if they could go elsewhere and get the PS games plus Xbox ones. Otherwise it feels quite one sided. If we can somehow get access to PS games through a Steam library then I think it almost nets out.

I was making a general point. I’ve said when genuine. Not referencing anyone or any person so saying if genuine then allow it as good discussion to be had.

We do not make a show of it like other forums, but I have heavily moderated people for being way too combative in both directions. Just flag any post you think goes against our TOS and we will take a look.

No problem. I’m usually just in the backlog thread so probably miss a lot of this stuff.
